I use Slackware because when I first started using Linux in the early 2000's it was one of the the only distros that seemed viable with a slow and frequently down internet connection (full install came with most software you would need, documentation, how-tos, etc.) and I've distro hopped a lot over the years and gotten a better connection but I always come back to Slack. In it's day it was known for being easy-mode Linux simply for having an installer. Now it's one of the least convenient distros, but the simplicity of the system makes administration so much easier. If you know how to compile software from source and can make simple bash scripts there isn't much in Slackware that can stump you, and no distro specific tools or defaults that might step on your toes. It makes Debian stable look bleeding edge but outside of a few packages, I don't really care.

Redhat and current/former RH employees making it a hard dependency in their software (examples: Gnome3, udev, logind) and distro maintainers maintainers being lazy. When systemd was first released there wasn't really a way to do cgroups, daemon management and socket activation in a unified and straight forward way, plus sysvinit was still only single thread at that time so systemd boot times were much faster. For those reasons systemd was semi-attractive, but people weren't satisfied in some of it's retarded defaults and general instability. Shortly after release though many alternatives popped up like upstart and openrc. This is when the unnecessary hard dependencies started showing up, to maintain the momentum systemd had gained. I think once Debian adopted systemd it was pretty much over and the more aggressive feature creep began.

Honestly Fuck Gentoo.
I have used it on and off for years. Gentoo sucks because shit arbitrarily breaks, and fixing becomes a nightmere, and various packages fail to build. What finally put me off it for good is Anki not running properly because of some horrific bug in QtWebKit (which is itself suckful software), that wouldn't go away with even rebuilds of qt*. Of course , I was using testing qt* because I needed it for various other packages that still haven't left testing. Also Firefox never once built successfully. The meta distribution idea is awesome, but the difficulties in practice are not worth it. Thats probably why linus uses fedora.
I liked FreeBSD's make world , but, hate the lack of software for *BSD.
OpenBSD is a meme. Currently no MAC system, but high quality code, little to no software available. Compiling anything discouraged.
I am currently using Kali simply because openVAS actually works in Kali.
Arch might be the best distribution I have ever used.

Usually when something breaks, it's because some maintainer was too lazy to specify the correct USE flag dependencies, and this tends to get fixed fast for important packages. Otherwise you can simply look at the compile error and figure out what USE flag you miss. Other times, it's because you need the latest version of a package and it's considered unstable (e.g. Vulkan support in SDL2). In any case, if you develop the good reflexes, you get it fixed in minutes most of the times.

There where no linux, when GNU was started. They even had and still have their own kernel - the Hurd, but Linus had been persuaded to free his kernel (because it were proprietary), so Debian guys used it to create first GNU/Linux distribution.

Also installed Lubuntu on my dad's laptop some time ago, it's running pretty smooth. it's crazy how Windows fucks up a computer so bad that even after formatting and installing Windows again it's still shit. the laptop is pretty much just used by the kids to play on a SNES emulator.
I wish RetroArch was more intuitive, I have to change the games everytime because the kids didn't learn how to read yet
