Has anyone read Nick Land? I like the /cyber/ feel of his stuff but I have to admit, I don't understand a lot of it. Any other things similar that may be more of a gateway? Or anything else that should be read before trying to understand Land?

Essentially…. Philosophy General

I'd say land is a philosophers philosopher in a sense, he is very much tied to the tradition and he makes lots of offhand references to various points that you probably won't get unless you have read like Kant or Deleuze for example.

That said I would say that he is by far one of my favorite contemporary philosophers. If you are interested in accelerationist ideas or NRx stuff maybe try looking at the works of Mencius Moldbug?

I don't know what else to tell you beyond that really, I don't find Land to be that hard to understand, you should try asking a specific question and see if people here can help you.

Nearly all philosophy seems to be pretentious assholes using flowery language to do little more than raise the barrier for entry.

That's pretty much to be expected when most of that shit was figured out centuries ago at the latest. I suppose the brouzouf must be nice for those that get their particular brand of "reality isn't real lol" to stick though. Still, you're much more likely to find an outlook of value from some random shazbot online than you are from some overpriced book of pretentious nonsense- assuming that they aren't just regurgitating the contents of said volumes of flowery circular logic.

I don't appreciate what looks to me to be an attack of philosophy itself. There are plenty of people who publish garbage, it's true, but I don't know if I'd argue those people are even philosophers. If they don't have an actual passion for discussion and trying to understand things; If they write a book because they know it's inflammatory or dumb enough to appeal to people and therefore line their pockets, I'd argue they aren't philosophers at all but charlatans.

I write this having read a lot of nonsense written by charlatans. I have read a lot of esoteric garbage and a lot of meme-packed works meant not to illustrate things and make them more clear but to obfuscate them and trap you in a way of thinking that is magical or otherwise illogical and unhelpful (but perhaps emotionally fulfilling).

Thank you for providing reading material. However, I must say, I absolutely hate this so far and I don't know how far I'll get in it. First the 54 page foreword (or "why this author is so fucking sick") which I find irrelevant and silly. I figure if you've gotten past that you've probably already bought the book so I don't really know why you need it. Just let the work speak for the author. Getting to the actual meat I bit right into a big mouthful of Communist nonsense. I realize you ought to probably at least read a whole chapter (or section, or what-have-you) before judging but I have a very hard time reading this when he opens with "race, gender and class oppressions" and continues right into apartheid, Kapital and bourgeoisie. I'll try to continue reading this later but this is clearly aimed at people who are already immersed in a pool of Communism, one for which I lack the gills.

Between the foreword, the disgusting Weimaresque cover and his obvious affiliations I am not impressed and not very interested.

Nick Land is a pseudo-celebrity. I have noted his various shock-value efforts. I have not been impressed.

I have academic training in philosophy of science. I regard Nick Land as an intellectual fraud.

Land, at least in Fanged Noumena, is a mixture of philosophy and art-horror which creates and then uses the language of accellerationism in a really fascinating way and towards an end that is truly unexplored prior to its printing, i.e. the machinations of capital detaching itself entirely from the human condition, guided by some kind of external Other, and what that even looks like to live inside. -See Meltdown for probably the most visceral and arguably most cyberpunk essay of Fanged Noumena.

I don't think it would be right to regard the work as purely philosophical in nature, because while it certainly IS philosophical, it uses art and an ad-hoc language in such a way as to show itself to us in a capacity that isn't the same as the methods of traditional philosophy, written and reasoned in print, making the comparison difficult. Because of that it shouldn't necessarily be read the same way one would regard an article printed in a journal of philosophy, if that makes sense.

What's kind of weird is comparing this to his later writing. Land in FN feels very different from the Land that wrote Dark Enlightenment, but that's just my take.

that ain't art horror, it is initiated hermeticism. he does not call it Western Esotericism because he couldn't sell the book without a marketing hook "Fanged Noumena" which is only new if you ignore the neo-Platonists, the Qaballah, and Aleister Crowley.

If anything is too difficult to read, there’s usually some introductory material to or simplified overview of subjects, works, and philosophers. You won’t have to pick up a dictionary as much using those instead of the more difficult original sources which you can move on to after reading.

Nick Land is a right wing neoreactionary, attempting to horrify the (male) reader with the idea of being a trans prostitute.

Your soo butt hurt and trigger you panic at the mere mention of trannies.

How sad that you are so easily swayed by that particular string of meaningless buzzwords. Selling the masses the idea of being a drug-fueled prostitute rather than anything that would truly threatens their power, and stigmatizing criticism of the inherent meaningless of that word salad by embedding terms the political status quo and corpocracy pretend to give a damn about is exactly the playbook of the modern and wealthy oppressor. In any other context, that sentence would reek of an upper-class idealogue attempting to show the world how woke he is- as if he couldn't get his way through any means he wished.

The Hacker Manifesto

by

+++The Mentor+++

Written January 8, 1986

Another one got caught today, it's all over the papers. "Teenager Arrested in Computer Crime Scandal", "Hacker Arrested after Bank Tampering"…

Damn kids. They're all alike.

But did you, in your three-piece psychology and 1950's technobrain, ever take a look behind the eyes of the hacker? Did you ever wonder what made him tick, what forces shaped him, what may have molded him?

I am a hacker, enter my world…

Mine is a world that begins with school… I'm smarter than most of the other kids, this crap they teach us bores me…

Damn underachiever. They're all alike.

I'm in junior high or high school. I've listened to teachers explain for the fifteenth time how to reduce a fraction. I understand it. "No, Ms. Smith, I didn't show my work. I did it in my head…"

Damn kid. Probably copied it. They're all alike.

I made a discovery today. I found a computer. Wait a second, this is schway. It does what I want it to. If it makes a mistake, it's because I screwed it up. Not because it doesn't like me… Or feels threatened by me.. Or thinks I'm a smart ass.. Or doesn't like teaching and shouldn't be here…

Damn kid. All he does is play games. They're all alike.

And then it happened… a door opened to a world… rushing through the phone line like heroin through an addict's veins, an electronic pulse is sent out, a refuge from the day-to-day incompetencies is sought… a board is found. "This is it… this is where I belong…" I know everyone here… even if I've never met them, never talked to them, may never hear from them again… I know you all…

Damn kid. Tying up the phone line again. They're all alike…

You bet your ass we're all alike… we've been spoon-fed baby food at school when we hungered for steak… the bits of meat that you did let slip through were pre-chewed and tasteless. We've been dominated by sadists, or ignored by the apathetic. The few that had something to teach found us willing pupils, but those few are like drops of water in the desert.

This is our world now… the world of the electron and the switch, the beauty of the baud. We make use of a service already existing without paying for what could be dirt-cheap if it wasn't run by profiteering gluttons, and you call us criminals. We explore… and you call us criminals. We seek after knowledge… and you call us criminals. We exist without skin color, without nationality, without religious bias… and you call us criminals. You build atomic bombs, you wage wars, you murder, cheat, and lie to us and try to make us believe it's for our own good, yet we're the criminals.

Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity. My crime is that of judging people by what they say and think, not what they look like. My crime is that of outsmarting you, something that you will never forgive me for.

I am a hacker, and this is my manifesto. You may stop this individual, but you can't stop us all… after all, we're all alike.

Shit. now i'm all, like, emotional.

I can not argue that but I look at that as a place where we are all coming from, a struggle to break free of a system that seeks our conformity and stifles us all.
