Reminder that Jews controlled the Soviet government for decades after it's creation which intentionally killed millions of people.
Weird how the Communists movements all over Europe had Jewish leaders.
Weird how the Soviets went out of their way to make Russia a Jewish state but failed despite Stalin having Jewish "wives". Instead they gave Jews a piece of territory in the East on top of power in security services like the NKVD and Red Army which they abused with little consequence. What a terrible life they had under socialism.

I actually think there isn't enough slang here. One of the most immersive parts of gibson is his elaborate creation of culture and slang.
The word schway is schway as fuck.
Alot of the existing slang in Gibson is (un)fortunately inapplicable because we don't live in the 80s.

IMO its b/c there is no such thing as cyberpunks. It seems no one actually wants to do anything. People like the aesthetic. Its difficult to live practically according to an asethic - most people here can't have a cyberpunk aesthetic job, grocery store etc. If cyber punk is a culture, it has to be more than an aesthetic but people can't really agree on what that might be.
The most popular guess seems to be hacker. but no one here seems to want to do anything like that. Mean while, shazbots who want to do that gather at other places under the title "hacker" and spew a bunch of drokk unreleated to computer security constantly telling each other to learn python.
Other people say its not all about hacking, there are roboticists, chemists, mercenaries. But these aren't necessarily obtainable either. Realistically, the few mercenary jobs that exist ("academia" etc) are essentially ex military which has a strong culture of its own. 8chers becoming chemists seems unlikely.
Hacker is the low hanging fruit. My bet is cyberpunk is dead until some high seirra operators adopt the label and put it on some projects with actual value, and perhaps /cyber/ aesthetics.
For now, I'd settle for a /cyber/ recommended guide to X.

Realistically, the few mercenary jobs that exist ("academia" etc) are essentially ex military which has a strong culture of its own. 8chers becoming chemists seems unlikely. Most mercenaries have a very specific mentality that is not exactly unsuitable for cyberpunk, but depending on their backgrounds, they are usually more of the "cowboy" type in my experience. Most of the other jobs (robotics/STEM/etc.) follow similar stereotypes, where the passion and community they are part of defines them as something not entirely cyberpunk (in many cases hardly punk at all). I would say that the illegal gene splicers in china are about as cyberpunk as it gets, but most western scientists are very docile have moral compasses that are straighter than a baptist preacher yelling at a gay couple.
A few backyard chemists and tinkerers are not exactly "cyberpunk" in the classic sense either, because they deal with tech in a positive "look at me" way that is neither low profile, nor low life.
There are other kinds of fringe mercenary groups that specialize in cyberwarfare, but like you said many exmilitary have their own distinct culture and are pretty different from most people here.
I would say that there are exceptions in contractors that work in defense skunkworks, but those kinds of people usually keep to themselves and are not even heard of unless mainstream media finds out about them.
Another note about mercenaries: a vast majority of them are only after the brouzouf and have little ambition or personality, or they are in it for the rush and define themselves much like celebrity sports superstars within their communities instead of the quiet hacker type.

Bullshit. A board with low PPH can still have a strong culture. You just need high-quality posts from a core group of intelligent and thoughtful posters. Megachan had about as many posts per day as this board has per hour, and it had a stable internalized board culture.

Clearly you kids don't get out much. A lot of the mercs and former military I've known(given, that's a very short list) have hobbies related to music and science fiction. A great deal are into punk music, psychobilly, industrial, and metal. Especially oldschool industrial acts like Nitzer Ebb and front 242.
As for low life, well I met one in a bar who introduced himself to me and then offered me a hit of acid. So there's that.
Another really wanted to get into robotics but couldn't get the marks in high school and ended up going military to get college paid for. Went to Iraq, did a couple tours, and came home, still struggled to find work due to certain personality issues that make for a great soldier but not such a great civilian(aggression, mainly), and so turned to mercenary work. Last I heard he was doing some shit in one of those smaller south american countries with cartel problems.
There really isn't anything keeping anyone of any walk of life from being into cyberpunk. You just have to enjoy the themes of it.

>There really isn't anything keeping anyone of any walk of life from being into cyberpunk.
It depends on how your going to define /cyber/. If cyber is the music you listen to, then anyone is /cyber/. I think a lot of people want /cyber/ to be "the greater /cyber/" or more all encompassing. They want so kind of primary identity as a "cyberpunk" but people haven't really clarified what a cyberpunk actually is. If cyberpunk is punk, it would be extraordinarily difficult for an ordinary person, much less solider to be cyberpunk.
I personally think /cyber/ isn't music at all. I think that /cyber/ is an individual understanding technology and tinkering with it themselves. I think mostly, this is code because code is accessible and low cost. I think thats why the "hacker" troupe is common. But, could be anything stem. There is definitely some aesthetic associated with /cyber/ though.

Cyberpunk is a glorified fiction fandom. People here treating it as anything more than that are pretentious shazbots.
All Cyberpunk as a fiction genre is, is any fiction concerning the philosophy and concepts around advanced technology in society, specifically around the matters of technological distribution, the questions of humanity and machine, and the variations of morality that are part of those questions. Everything else is tertiary to the core concepts.
It's not about hacking. It's not about corporate espionage, it's not necessarily about transhumanism, though there is an overarching theme of futurism, it's not even really about robots and shit. That's all just narrative device linking back to the core idea of human and machine and consciousness.

As I am sure you are aware there is virtually no discussion of fiction here. The conversation is mostly about how can I *be* more cyberpunk: what music, what clothes, what skills, what lingo. Rather what, what do you think of this work, or that work.

And that is part of the problem. Nobody can *BE* cyberpunk. We don't quite have the tech for that yet. we're at least 20 years away from it.
You can have future-forward clothing, or try to ape a style from some book or videogame or PNPRPG or movie, but none of that is really BEING cyberpunk, it's just looking a certain way, which has very little to do with cyberpunk as a core concept.
Sure you can look like or act like you're in some kind of cyberpunk world, but that's still just futurism, not cyberpunk.
Skills in a cyberpunk world are much the same as they are now. In every cyberpunk setting you have people with different skills designed for different niches in society. Some people are hackers, some people are designers, some people are mercenaries or military, some people deal in various forms of illicit entertainment, whatever. It's all the same as now, just adapted to the setting it's in. Personally I like to screw around with electronics, firearms, and used to do a little bit of basic hacking(decided it's not my thing). None of those things make me more or less cyberpunk, they're just skills and experiences.

Well as a place for literary criticism this place isn't much. The only literary post on the board is the "I hate necromancer" post.
I am actually far more interested in seeing if this place could become a hangout for makers/hackers + schway asthetics than talking about necromancer. Id like to see some kind of project. I started writing the /cyber/ guide to Software Libre-Minimalist flavour. It would be interesting for others here to write equivalent guides from other perspectives perhaps freedom-agnostic (chad?) Maximalist guide.
Or guides to things outside software. It would beschway to /cyber/ guide to electronics, or etc.
It would be interesting for /cyber/ to create some kind of coherent philosophy or set of principals and activities, although not necessarily novel so we could understand what /cyber/ is.
What does lain like ?

I can dig that sort of thing. Personally I've never been much of a hacker, largely because I can't code for shit. I suspect I simply haven't found the right learning method for anything but basic HTML and Javascript circa 2008 when I last bothered.
What I've always loved is the physical stuff. I like messing around with electronics, and I like the idea of practical wearable tech. Unfortunately most of the consumer stuff is…pretty fucking unschway.
I have never been able to grasp why so many of these wearable and consumer electronics makers pair everything through the phone. For some things I can kind of understand it, like Drone controls and such, but a lot of other things seem ridiculous to pair with something as vulnerable as a cellphone.
I've been brainstorming for a while on making a spherical drone. The problem there is that I'd like it to be able to fit in my palm. It seems like a lot of makers and companies are having difficulty keeping camera drones small, mostly because they want to make them fast and have HDR cameras on them.
I'd rather have one that can simply keep up with me for hiking or for urbex, that can record cellphone quality video, and that can do some basic stuff like navigate itself around objects in its' immediate path and orbit around me or hover as need be. More than that I'd rather it be inexpensive. I'll probably cannibalize an old cellphone for the camera and figure out the rest with my limited electronics experience.
Unfortunately being poor as shit makes it difficult to have a lot of useful crap around so I most make basic stuff with breadboards. I think the most interesting thing I made was a very basic and pretty much useless dual rotor drone that weighs about as much as a small drinking glass.
…and promptly wrecked the thing when I tried to add weight to it and it shattered against my apartment wall and blew one of the capacitors.
Frankly a lot of my interest in cyberpunk is that I want to be a cyborg.
