If it isn't cyberpunk enough for you, the answer is that you should contribute interesting ideas/projects you would like to see in the world. VR is real sure but its very limited, and basically rule by 2 or 3 megacorps. Theres no VR internet, only chat apps and some that render sites in VR environment
The tech is just not as impressive: no man-machine interfaces, no cyborg implants, no flying cars, no hypersonic planes, no oneill cylinders in orbit. We havent even gone to mars yet, and we probably wont for yet another 20 or 30 years (they said it was going to be in 2020 back in 2000)
Computers have literally devolved into single-use disposable physical spyware you can barely modify without rendering it useless. All this shit doesnt do anything to prevent crime, theft or scams, its about controlling you.
You could be 100% legit anon on the internet before, now its basically impossible.
I guess the problem is that cyberpunk showed a fucked up but still exciting world with tons of cool stuff and while things were bad there was a chance for rebellion while now we're seeing govs even in the west putting together anti-civilian surveillance networks that make the soviets look like libertarians, but more importantly these networks are becoming inescapable. In cyberpunk people can stick it to the megacorps and govs, in our reality pretty soon rebellion will be practically impossible: if you don't get shot down (metaphorically and/or literally) your rebellion will be destroyed from the inside-out because all comm lines are compromised by design and you have huge AIs doing pattern matching 24/7 to protect the status quo from having to respect your rights.
Its all so tiresome.

/k/ has been spammed into oblivion for a few days with no backlash from the BO and now 80% of current threads are a mix of /int/ and /pol/. It happened before but these were shat on and ridiculed and they went down quite quickly due to bumps of quality threads and few of aforementioned ones but now it seems the only thread that gets some actual attention is QTDDTOT. I'm doing my research and occasionally bump SMG thread with posts but there's been little interest in that. Other old threads also suffer from lack of activity more. Maybe its not dead yet but this case, even if resolved, does show that something's going wrong with the board or BO.
