Hey /cyber/, I used to go on here a lot back in 2014-2016, and I met a couple people from that zeemaps post a long time ago and we'd really like to interact with some people from here, especially the OGs. Play some games, talk about cyber shit, do some dev projects if anyone's apt with that, etc.
I know Discord isn't a popular medium here but all my old Tox friends haven't been on in years.
https://discord.gg/rRacTGU
Here it is, let's relive some old memories and do some fun cyber shit together.

You got it mane. Nobody here creates or discusses worth a damn, it seems. Honestly /cyber/ isn't the place for cyberpunk advancement, or creation. If you are printing Liberators or custom one-use high-caliber tools, if you are dead dropping/USB planting, or if you are building a psudeocyberdeck to house in your pack for your ali expressed and jury-rigged videoshades than you should find somewhere else. This board is more for lurkers to hangup on before they take a series interest in the mythos of it all.

Yeah, this is the problem with Cyberpunk. It started as fiction, and so trying to do anything else with it looks silly as fuck. I agree that if you're actually doing ANYTHING you need to find someplace else, but aside from Reddit with super niche communities like /r/cyberdecks and invite-only clubs with 3 members, where would that 'someplace' be? Ultimately 'REAL' Cyberpunk is a niche of a niche. There's probably under 1000 people, world wide, doing that shit, and they're too busy doing it to talk to a bunch of LARPers.

Cyberpunk is subgenre of science fiction, so if you want to, your best bet is to search there. The best thing is you won't find any stupid LARPers out there, trying to be "low life" or other bullshit. Just stay away from specific fanbases like SW or star trek, though latter is not so canserous, afaik.

I think people are looking for more than fiction. The opportunity exists for making things, and doing things. I think people see that, but also that there are very few taking that opportunity and running with it. I think the issue is that they're looking for those people in 'Cyberpunk' places, when Cyberpunk is clearly just fiction, where if you follow maker spaces and things like that, there are people doing these things … just very few of them, and typically not while looking cool.

Then they are retards. Making a fiction a political movement will do nothing but make the fiction as shitty.

Then they will be told to fuck off in places i described, and rightfully so, as they do nothing but shit and preach. And that's a good thing. This place sucks for a while already because of that, though not all people who are interested in something fun and have left. Yet. Yeah, I don't think Cyberpunk had any sense of unified political beliefs either, so it just kind of muddies the waters of the genre.
>Then they will be told to fuck off in places i described, and rightfully so, as they do nothing but shit and preach.
Definitely not the kinds of things I'm talking about. You definitely get a lot of hacker wannabes telling everyone how bad their 'opsec' is. No one wants those assholes around.
>Good job with these AR things, guys, they are awesome as they actually do something outside of fiction
That's actually more what I'm talking about. I think there's a sense of owning your tech, by really understanding how it works, and being able to manipulate it to your own ends.
I think people want a maker/modding community that actually does cool shit, with a cyberpunk sensibility. It's okay to be inspired by Cyberpunk. It's okay to let that inspiration show in your design and the overall themes of your work.
The real problem is you get too many people who either want Mr. Robot to be real, or they want to talk about building HardSuits from BubbleGum Crisis, and so the people actually making custom wearbales, laptops, phones, mesh-nets, etc … all inspired by Cyberpunk, and definitely borrowing from the themes and aesthetic, are stuck in maker spaces next to cosplayers and old guys making leather purses for ren fairs.

More like the genre correlates with the people's views and preferences. Those who like it are generally also transhumanists, but it is not the cause of fiction, but there's correlation between the two. The same with making things. Maximum of what cyberpunk has done for these activities is encouraged certain designs, though if the thing looks good who cares if it's copying a design from, say, deus ex(most designs are actually done by copying and altering others), but the function overall is of other origin. Think of if like scientific progress and old-school science fiction.
>The real problem is you get too many people who either want Mr. Robot to be real
The moment they start thinking in terms of the fiction they start to suck, as they lose themselves and their ideas, if they had any before, exchanging them for popularity and looks of an imaginary world. The term "mall ninja" well fits this description, if extended beyond weapons.

This is an interesting point. So, if someone is doing a thing, and they concede that it is inspired by Cyberpunk, and that they like the aesthetic, but they aren't pretending it *IS* Cyberpunk, but continuing along their own path, then that's something different, in your opinion?
>The moment they start thinking in terms of the fiction they start to suck
I think, at that point, you're just cosplaying. If you're calling yourself a 'cyberpunk' and you're taking apart random electronics and sewing and gluing circuit boards to shit to make it look 'high tech', that's just Steampunk level cosplay, and yes, it immediately sucks.

If they are doing it for the purpose of recreating an item or style from fiction, then no, but if they copy it because they like the design or an idea in themselves then they are just doing the thing and the connection to fiction is more of a "someone has thought of it before me" and not "someone did it so i'd like to be like him". If that makes sense.
>I think, at that point, you're just cosplaying.
Cosplay is generally harmless and sometimes even beneficial and certainly can be fun. The problem is that some people, especially in the field of our interest, convince themselves about importance of their acting. At that moment they feel more important themselves because of that activity, and at this point comes tribalism, group thinking and group rules, and attempts to distance from them makes them very aggressive, as their importance to the genre and themselves is under a threat. They know cyberpunk is coll, even edgy, actually, so they create movement that tries to act like one, so that they feel important and powerful/knowledgeable/etc, but there's not much basis for the movement so it kinda floats and lives and feeds on itself. Now i kinda lost it so i guess it's your turn to try to describe it better.
Here are some nice cosplay examples:

So, that black 'Cyberdeck' that completely works is an example of non-cosplay, to me, because it's just someone who wanted a pi-top and liked the general look and feel of the Cyberdeck idea from Cyberpunk 2020, but he's not trying to be a 'Cyberpunk', he just built a thing he wanted, and borrowed some design inspiration from something he liked.
> Cosplay is generally harmless and sometimes even beneficial and certainly can be fun.
I'm totally fine with the girl in this pic, going to cons and going to Halloween parties dressed as 'Cyberpunk'. She's wearing non-functional costume wear, and she knows it.
>They know cyberpunk is coll, even edgy, actually, so they create movement that tries to act like one, so that they feel important …
And, the third picture, is 'SexyCyborg' a self-proclaimed 'real Cyberpunk', who mostly makes projects the average 12yr old could piece together, themed mostly around her giant fake tits. If she were a dude, no one would tolerate her lame bullshit, but white knights keep her living in a fantasy world where she's a real Cyberpunk, ready to hack the corporations.
These are, to me, the three archetypes of modern Cyberpunk. The people who aren't playing, the people who know they're playing, and the delusional losers.
I'm saying, the people who 'aren't playing' should have their own subculture, well away from the other two.

Depends on the usability of a cyberdeck. Does it offer anything to a person that alternatives do not? Generally, it's impractical, so i'd say it's meh, but if someone finds it usable and comfortable with using it, i don't mind.
>themed mostly around her giant fake tits
Well, it's kinda the point. Tits are more of a theme of her channel than cyberpunk, or tech, for that matter. A different field of entertainment, though if what you describe is true that your point is also. I don't watch her so i can't tell.
>I'm saying, the people who 'aren't playing' should have their own subculture, well away from the other two.
There's no point in such a subculture outside from the fiction, no one would care and it would not be of any attractiveness. The whole point is to try to act cool and edgy by parodying characters and surroundings of successful genre.

It has some interesting features. He can run kali, has all his SDR/Wifi stuff plugged in, and he can put the screen into a set of goggles and use that for privacy. It's not something I'd use, but for the price it looks like he can do what he wants to do with it.
>Well, it's kinda the point. Tits are more of a theme of her channel than cyberpunk, or tech, for that matter.
Yeah, I guess she's mostly just going for the 'giving guys something to wank to' audience. I'm shocked she hasn't started a cam channel or something.

The main problem with cyberdecks is that keyboard itself is pretty big and clumsy, and if you add display you have an impractical laptop, but like i said, everything has its uses. Though generally these things are not worth it fro most people.
>I'm shocked she hasn't started a cam channel or something.
Well, there are plenty of cam channels, but there are few that use any disguise. And it's youtube as well.
>I don't think that's what the dude who made that pi-top was going for, but then who knows?
I don't think pi-top has much to do with cyberpunk, tbh. Everything was going to it since the popularity growth of rpi. Next step is a pocket pc or PDA something, basically just further development of small open source motherboard implementation. Even if its creator did go for it, the people who'll be using it do not, so it's not like it's a problem. It would not make him less of a poser, but his creation would still find uses and progress beyond that.

I think you're right, and I think that's what's annoying me. I want to find more stuff like that, and the creator considered it 'Cyberpunk Themed', but hanging around Cyberpunk boards is giving me cancer.
I want a place to go for that stuff, without … well, everything else here. The bad cosplay, the revolutionary wannabes, the toxic-because-it's-edgy club, etc, etc …
I just want a place to go where I can find people building Cyberpunk themed shit, that looks cool, works, and serves a purpose.

Don't worry anon, there's still exciting things to explore. I felt that way too, but after a while a started viewing all these things separate from cyberpunk itself. Aesthetic? Synthwave/80s/retrofuturism/etc, more or less an independent art/visual style. Electronics? Just caring about your security and wanting more options and implementations of useful stuff. Ans so on like this with everything else. If you think of things that way, you can easily determine their usefulness and value. You know, i as well wanted to open a bar or something like guys in a thread nearby, but it was long before that and i wanted the synthwave style, with infinite neon square fields on the black background. I haven't dumped this idea yet.
The main problem with /cyber/punk board is, interestingly, cyberpunk itself, as attempts to stay on topic end up in this way. Here are some guys more interested in things themselves rather that their relation to the cyberpunk genre, and they are doing pretty good job at it. Just focus on things you wish to create or implement instead of the genre and its importance. It's already happened that way so this board is not devoted to fiction, but more to things like tinkering, aesthetic, cosplay, and others, with plenty of them being pretty utilitarian and productive. I'd even say that it makes more sense to ask help here than on /tech/, for example, about certain questions. i honestly don't know how it can be changed to the better or what name would be more appropriate for such a board, so it seems we'll have to cope with this paradox.

That word is used all over this board. I've honestly never used it anywhere else in my life, I just figured that was a common term here.
I'm definitely not the guy who thinks Cyberpunk should be a subculture of social change, haha.
I don't know if there's just one guy spewing it like crazy and I picked it up there, but that word is on practically every thread, and it felt like the right descriptor for the edge-lords that need to scream nigger, shazbot and kike in every thread, just because they can.
I'm not shocked, I don't even believe it's honest racism.

Some time ago I would meet up with a group of dudes and we would have a "flash drive party" (I know totally virgin-sounding) where we would get together with our laptops and exchange shit we had. Everything from movies, games, ebooks, sites, forums, pics, etc. yet most of it was all cyber-related. We all sadly went our separate ways (school, jobs, etc.) but…idk as old-fashioned as that sounds it would be cool to meet like-minded people and share data.

Try namefagging on a forum or irc something and asking there.
The cyber forum link is in the following link and it's still active, there's an irc as well, I don't use either so can't say for sure they'll help you with that but more likely than asking on a board for anonymous posting:
http://archive.is/3GeMj archive because jinteki.industries is still down/suspended, they must've been hosting it on wordpress, they hired some "ex" military general to crack down on wrong think
In college areas, you can find pirateboxes, they're servers with wifi running on raspberry pi's or some routers and they don't just serve files, iirc from the last time I played with piratebox.cc, you can have an ib running on it, so maybe find one in your area and post your idea there. I'm certain there are other ways, like organizing it yourself, printing signs and posting it irl or setup your own piratebox with your idea as the theme, they're highly customizable.
