What a time to be alive!
Based on the numerous reviews I've read about it, I hope this has as little to do plot-wise with the 2017 film as possible.

Me too. Just finished the first season of SAC. Very good.

There's also this, which is kinda old. I've only been able to watch the 3 minute 360 degree teaser on youtube, which seems to appear to be low quality no matter what I set the resolution to. I get the feeling the resolutions available there are a lie since my streaming speed seemed unaffected by changing them as well. Couldn't get the teaser to play on my phone. The app closes whenever I try. Has anybody seen it in real VR, or at least been able to view it on a phone? Is it good. I'm disappointed they used the Arise GitS design, but it's not directed by the same guy, nor does it have he same music artist as Arise, so I think could be good for a brief 15 minutes of high quality CGI. Also, even thought it uses Arises' design, it may not be in the same continuity. Does /cyber/ have any opinions on how good it is as a VR short, and whether or not being VR really adds something significant? Or would this have been better off as a regular (high quality) CGI short from only one perspective?

Also, while on the subject of GitS, I've been reading 2.0 and just found out that many scenes are not simply mildly censored, but entirely censored. They couldn't even bother with covering the lewd bits, the pages are entirely missing from all official English releases. There was only one attempted fan translation as far as I know, and it began before the official release did. When the official releases began, the fan translation was snuffed out. It may not have even been complete, and thus not even made it to all pages removed from the official releases. Besides that, it's incredibly rare. Does anyone have it, or at least know where I can get the JP version? I'm surprised such a cult classic hasn't had outraged fans gather up all the censored pages and translate them by now.

Noice. I know I was expecting lewds and nudity somewhat justified by the situation like in the image I found, but I wasn't expecting outdoor masturbation with voyeurism. Do you remember where you found this?

I also have no idea how long this scene goes on. There could be several more consecutive pages to this. Really updates my journal.

That doesn't actually appear to be from GitS. Based on this image I found in one of Shirow's doujins, they are likely just recurring doujin characters. Haven't found that page yet though. Shirow made a massive amount of quality doujins.

I've heard many people say SAC had great Nip VAs. I've always listened to the EN version because I thought it was really good, unlike most. Would it be worth it rewatch the whole show in subs? Are the subs a copypaste of the EN VA script?

I watched 6 episode today and I'm not liking it nearly as much. A difference between the EN VA lines and the subs gave me some better insight into episode 3: Android and I, though.

Yeah, I've been looking at those, but after seeing that one uncensored gallery of Shirow's on the panda, I just can't enjoy his art when it's censored, even the smut. I'm going to delay finishing 2.0 until a jap scan shows up and the censored content can be translated.

It couldn't possibly be worse. Even that awful live-action Hollywood adaptation was more faithful to Motoko's character than Arise was.
I still maintain that 2nd Gig was the pinnacle of GITS adaptations, even better than the 1995 movie. It had solid writing and voice acting, and fantastic characterization throughout. And the whole refugee backstory has really interesting real-world parallels. One wonders what might happen if a real-world Kuze were to emerge.

NOTHING beats the orignal GITS movie. It's a piece of art and only suffers (if at all) from bad translation in the West. It has more condensed information than all other GITS movies combined and should be taught at schools due to its excellent writing. It's one of those rare movies which gets better every time you watch it, since you start to notice all the tiny little hints to absolutely everything in this movie. It perfectly depicts how mankind will change and enhance it's analytical abilities to process information… something most viewers can't do without a neural link. It's a total information overflow condensed into 90 mins of celluloid.

Not just the writing, but also the directing. Prime example, the garbage truck driver interrogation/therapy scene. Batou and the Major are just watching, not saying a word, but both touching the glass as if trying to connect with the driver. They're subconsciously reaching out to him. That scene is all about showing the humanity and compassion they retain and their desires for real human connections, despite their cyborg bodies and violent jobs.

I enjoyed SAC way more than GitS, and a major flaw in GitS is that Major does not resonate as something inhuman surrounded by humans. Everyone seems kind of robotic and Major just seems a bit more "edgy".
