Battle Angel Alita not only have the cyber aesthetics down but it is one of the best stories ever. Very melancholy.
Stay away from the sequels though.

Probably a bit cliche, but check out Ghost in the Shell. It's an oldie but goodie. If you already happen to like marvel comics, I personally find Ant Man to be the closest to cyberpunk of the heroes.

Check out Transmetropolitan.
It's basically "the adventures of (not)Hunter S. Thompson in the ridiculous cyberpunk future.

There's a short manga called Hotel that has some cyber elements. I dunno why I thought of it when I saw this thread. The whole thing is a play on the "global warming will cause flooding" idea as I think the author saw it and thought it would make a good framing for a story; it's about a project to preserve life on Earth in a kind of robotic tower safeguarded by an AI that's basically just a child. They named him Louis, and gave him the task of protecting them forever. When the people aren't around anymore he sorta develops and becomes smarter and is able to repair himself, and continues to do so in order to protect all the DNA left in his care.
He does it for a long time.

Amen to that. It's one of those really rare cases of the adapted material being far superior to the original. Mamoru Oshii deserves far more credit for GITS' success than Shirow. And even though Oshii didn't work on SAC, it's obvious that SAC's production team based their storytelling style on Oshii's work and only used the manga for visual design cues. Oshii took something mediocre and elevated it into true art.
Prime example: the garbage-truck driver interrogation/interview/therapy session. In the manga, it's two pages and ends with a joke, as if his life and memories have no meaning. In the 1995 movie, it's treated as the horrific situation it really would be, with the driver in a thousand yard stare as he tries to cope with the truth. All the members of Section 9 are genuinely worried about him, despite him being a "nobody" and technically a criminal. Oshii brought the humanity and compassion to GITS that was badly needed.

I see far too much of myself in Dan's general attitude, if not so much his habits.
It's become a little disturbing.

I don't so much mean that. I enjoy a bit of booze on occasion, and Pot is perfectly fine with me, as is the occasional hallucinogenic. What I see in Dan of myself is his general nihilism, his misery, his desire for any and all escapes, his rapid acceptance of technological implants/prosthetics, his mannerisms, and his many, many regrets.

Because that's a figment of your autistic fucking imagination.

I think they needed for the story to actually go somewhere at some point. They introduced a virus that's making a virtual high more dangerous than a physical drug. Now we have a lot of questions, starting with 'why?'.
I'm also wondering why this guy decided to drop off the map, but that might have something to do with Fixer disappearing too.
Seems like whoever put that code out there wants it to stay out there, and is willing to eliminate anyone who's investigating a fix.
But, yeah, after everything this comic has thrown at you, balk at the fact that he works out of disused room in the tunnels. That's the hard part to swallow.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I tried reading the manga after watching the movies and the show, that scene is about where I stopped in the manga. The art/visuals in the manga are still pretty dope though—Got to give credit where credit is due. Shirow also did some hentai that is pretty cyber punk.

Those are actually official. The reason Ghost In The Shell movie is good is because it wasn't actually Shirow who actually wrote it. By the time the manga was produced, he only wanted to draw butts and tits, so the director only took the main idea from the source.
On the other hand, it's said Applessed is very good.
