I begin to shill for the Pyra. Costs estimated between 400 to 600€, but with the modular design a hardwareupdate of the SOC, RAM and storage can be made in under 100€ some time after the release. Schematics and case design files will be released with the device in ~Q1/Q2 2016.

Raspi is garbage-tier arm performance. Pyra is faster and not exactly cheap. Baddragon or whatever his name is happens to be the only modern manufacturer of UMPC hardware. You could give it a shot though. I recommend cutting off all the extra-long pins and ports so that your board is less bulky. Add the headers you want back on using more compact ports (like a folding ethernet port) once you have a proper case and keyboard.

You need an adapter to do that. There are no cheap USB-SATA combis out there so thei decided to use a USB3 port which actually is just USB 2 but the other lanes can be used with an adapter.

If you think a raspberry pi is a UMPC you're delirious. You'd need to add a keyboard, a monitor, LTE, a battery with a charging circuit; fit all that in a case and hope that it somehow fits in your pocket. Even if you were to start with a credit-card sized single board computer, the raspberry pi is a poor choice. You'd be better off with one of the many more powerful boards that cost roughly the same.

If you talk about the Pyra: it should work very well since the devs got much experience from the open pandora which was nice for the time too. And if you keep lurking the dev's news you will see how much affort and fixes are done.
If you talk about the GPD WIN it should be atleast okay, it is just not that advanced as the Pyra and non-modular, while having a x68 SOC on the pro-side.
The Pyra costs around 500-600€depending on your taxes. The GPD costs 500$ as implied on indiegogo.

I think if the nintendo 3DS got a homebrew linux it could come close to that. Touchscreen keyboards won't type an essay but they're good for light stuff. Plus it gets cameras, a mic, sd card, audio jack, speakers, and stereoscopic screen.

The chinks are making decent android handhelds in the 3ds form factor. It's pretty similar in specs to the Pyra(battery, screen, CPU+GPU and RAM) for $180. By the time the Pyra actually ships this thing will probably cost closer to $100.
All it needs is a small keyboard to replace those gaming keys and speakers in the middle and it could probably do the job. It doesn't have as many ports though only the very basics.

My daily driver is a 2011 vintage Samsung N145 Plus. It's pretty great, except somewhat slow. I've gotten an XL battery from AliExpress for it, as well as swapped out the drive for an SSD.
I used to have a HTC Dream/Google G1. That's still my best smart phone experience. Even though the latest I used was plenty faster (a Xiaomi Mi3), I just couldn't help but miss the slide-out keyboard of the Dream.
Why are all netbooks they make these days scrub-tier? You can get 2k+ displays on a 5" phone, but when you look at 10" laptops/netbooks, it's 1376x768.
If I had to pick a device from today's offering, I guess I'd take the Macbook 12". Even then, I'd miss the integrated ethernet. As it is, I'm probably going to stick to this puppy for the foreseeable future - both because I don't have the $$$ to buy anything new, and because I'm not convinced by the offerings in this form factor. These ~5" UMPCs are a neat development, though, and I'll be following them closely.

I was thinking of doing something with my RaspPi, I had a Mac System 8 emulator running on it before the novelty died. My daily driver is a Nexus 7 2013 LTE 32 GB storage/2 GB memory with a bluetooth keyboard case.
You can install native Debian, Xubuntu/Lubuntu/Kubuntu and Arch on it and its faster then newer Android OS (when I ran Android on it I ran SlimKat 4.1 and 5.1, and it was still pretty fast if you keep tab management low).

That screen aspect ratio is garbage. Stupidly wide. The size of the keyboard is weird. It's difficult to thumb type on, you kind of have to shift it back and forth to hit some of the middle stuff because it's slightly too big. I think you can set it on a desk to just barely be able to touch type on it, but I haven't really used it like that.
Despite the flaws, it is actually pretty entertaining. The wifi antenna in it seems really good. One of my earliest days using it, I was able to see two wifi networks at a friend's house that none of my other devices could see at the same time. I really don't like the keyboard layout. They made it less wide than even a 60% keyboard, removing dedicated keys for minus, equals, apostrophe, quote, etc. They squeezed in dedicated arrow keys also. Just felt like a lot of poor decisions, but then I saw that the old Scion that it's based on had an identical layout.
You might also be interested to know that a successor to the Gemini was announced yesterday. Cosmo Communicator. Very similar hardware with similar flaws. They added keyboard backlight, good rear-facing camera (and removal of front-facing camera), second 2" screen on the cover so you can see who is calling without opening it. Still same keyboard layout and still using mediatek, though. It's a newer SoC, but this still likely means bad GNU/Linux support.

Forgot to add, I never actually put my SIM in it and used it as my main device. There were way too many shortcoming and discomforts for me to use it over my normal phone. I'd often either carry both in a pocket, or use the Gemini while my OnePlus 3 was charging, though. In addition to it not feeling ready, it also takes a microSIM for some reason. I had already converted to a nanoSIM for my OnePlus 3, so I couldn't put my SIM in there. Maybe there's a simple adapter I could 3D print, but I never bothered. If you don't think you'd use it as a phone either, the WiFi version is actually a bit cheaper. I got the 4G version thinking it'd become my main phone. I don't exactly regret it, it still leaves me the option to change later. The WiFi model is also kind of a second-class citizen when it comes to all the software updates. It gets separate releases.
Oh, and you have to use a weird flashing tool to get the other operating systems on it. It might have improved now, but early on it didn't work on most GNU/Linux distros. I had to use some Debian liveUSB or something. It was enough trouble that I haven't continued keeping it updated to the newer technical previews. You might be able to get a Gemini for cheap since some people were disappointed, and now there's a better device a lot of people will move to. I was in a Telegram for the Gemini and an alarming number of them instantly backed the Cosmo Communicator. It felt too soon to have another device to me, and it still has a lot of the same flaws, so I'm a bit disenchanted with Planet Computers as a whole now. I'm gonna try to be more patient in the future and just wait on the more hacker-friendly devices like the Pyra, Neo900, and Librem 5.

I just have an old netbook. It runs Ubuntu. Yeah, I know it's a botnet, but all I use the thing for is as a portable document repo and way to work out of the house. and by "document" I mean "high violence animated pornography" and by "work" i mean "shitpost aggressively on facebook until my friends arrive to hang out with me irl"

I use android with mine, its very nice, battery lasts about a day and is usb-c charged. kali linux fully supports gemini which should be good enough for most of you.
