Virtually every artist that ever put out a metal album is featured on that site, including thousands of decades-old bands that released one 4-track demo before quietly disappearing.
But what this thread is for is the community of the website's message board. Get ready for a wild ride, folks. Let the attached snapshot set the tone.
You'd think a website devoted to documenting music where lyrical themes a myriad of taboo subjects would attract scores of politically incorrect malcocks, but a cursory glance at their general threads reveals a different reality. Purportedly, Metal-Archives used to be very conservative in the distant past (think from 2004-2008), but I wouldn't know since most of those old threads have long since been purged. In 2009, the community changed drastically. Prominent alt-righters and other right-wingers were routinely made examples of and systematically purged from the site. This left perhaps only a handful of centrists and Libertarians forced to stay quiet.

It does seem like the older metal crowd were more cocks to just let the music be what it was and had a more earthy mindset that wasn't as prone to the kind of intellectual insecurity plaguing the music scene nowadays. Even the lyrical subject matter was often more focused on street-level concerns (the old "sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll" cliche) or even just things that make for cool imagery (war, death, evil, fantasy, etc.).
I wonder how much the change in attitude is due to the more traditional styles of metal falling out of popularity in the '90s. Aside from any debate about musical value, black and death metal in particular seem to largely be the domain of bitter nerds who are overly eager to one-up that ding dang dirty vapid Chad in any way they can.
I left the subculture years ago and have almost no skin in the game, but I hate seeing the direction things have gone.

Traditional metal never really faded away, modern power metal kind of keeps the old themes of high fantasy and everything it goes with alive, along with the musicianship of traditional metal bands itself. Power metal experienced a resurgence during the late 90s and the 00s. I don't really listen to modern power metal and when I do listen to metal about 80% of it is extreme metal, but from people I know who are metalheads who listen to power metal and the old metal bands, they do take the music way less seriously. Not saying that they make a mockery out of it, any metal genre has a good way of parodying itself without even trying to it's just that they don't try to present it as something it's not.

Power metal was never really that big in the U.S., though. Things have been different in Yurop from what I understand, and it seems like it was a lot more successful over there overall.
It also generally seems like it focuses on the lighter side of the fantasy aesthetic more than the way earlier bands would mix that up with the grittier stuff. Judas Priest would be an example of a band who fit that bill, both in terms of their imagery but also on a musical level.
My main beef with power metal specifically is that it tends to lack the hard, driving sound I like. I'm more into the punkier side of the NWOBHM and the early extreme metal bands. And for as much crap as hair metal gets, even some of those bands had balls.
I think the metal scene today has become too fragmented and incestuous overall. It's great that there's become such a variety of stuff out there, but it's become way too focused on fitting into tiny little niches and trying too hard to scare away normalfags. The older bands were more broad-minded and weren't afraid to look to other forms of popular music for inspiration (even drawing from punk rock at a time when punks and metalheads hated each other's guts).

I came of age in the late 2000s in a town with a sizeable punk scene and some metal as well (Richmond VA). I started going to metal shows circa 2010 and the general milieu there was truckers, bikers, rednecks, D&D autists, redneck girlfriends, edgy teenagers, and the occasional punk rocker or mexican. Over the years punk rockers showed up more and more, and eventually their hipster girlfriends followed. They were followed in turn by gays, vegans, catladies and soon the entire fagwagon. It was usually the catladies who would get involved in things like booking shows, merch stands, social media, etc so they could effectively gatekeep which bands were and were not allowed in the scene. The old crowd of mostly white males was confined to black metal shows and even then they had to contend with shoegazing hipsters.
At one point a pajeet showed up to a thrash shows in a pastel pink polo, cargo shorts, and flipflops. He was only interested in djent and similar "highbrow" genres. Another person, the girlfriend of Municipal Waste's Phil "Landphil" Hall, was a BDSM pajeet and tumblr thot who used her boyfriends popularity as a springboard for her modeling career, and served up her porn with a side dish of social justice and alternative healing.
It's also worth noting Richmond has many far left institutions like Seven Hills Antifa, the Wingnut Anarchist Collective, Active RVA (kosher and presentable activism foundation that hosts privilege workshops), and of course VCU. Contrast this to near by Lynchburg, whose fledgling metal scene birthed the Wolves of Vinland

Loyalties to Metal subculture are important to metalheads, but not at the expense of musical integrity. While Metal subculture was never immune to far-left politics, metalheads generally place a premium on quality of music. We can go down a litany of highly influential left-wing and/or Antifa-affiliated bands that contributed to Extreme Metal’s evolution: Kreator, Cryptic Slaughter, Sacred Reich, Cro-Mags, Carcass, Napalm Death, Brutal Truth, Panopticon, Sacrilege, Extreme Noise Terror, Bolt Thrower, Deviated Instinct, Concrete Sox, Hellbastard, Hellkrusher, Dystopia, Sore Throat / Saw Throat, The Meads of Asphodel, Profecium, et fucking cetera. Even so, you can still like all of those bands plus dozens of NSBM without any contradiction because Metal is a genre first and a subculture second. And even with all this pozzed shit from Punk spilling over into Metal, there was still plenty of room for right-wingers to congregate.
Sadly, we're now entering an era where leftists are going to be claiming more scalps as payment processors continue to deny people selling far-right music their services. Anyone remember Metal Maniacs or Metal Edge? For those out of the know, Metal Maniacs and its sister publication Metal Edge were two Metal-themed magazines that ran from the late '80s until 2009. The magazines were run by (((Mike "G" Greenblatt))) and (((Katherine Ludwig))), two professional PC lefty snarkers publishing the printed version of clickbait. Kat wanted Metal Maniacs to "treat kids (who were metal fans) like human beings that might possibly have something to say." Furthermore, the magazine featured a letters section in which serious discussions about the metal scene and politics could take place. Ludwig stated, "I also liked to get in something about vegetarianism, hemp, feminism, and freedom of speech when I could." As you could've surmised from modern examples like Gawker Media or any discussion space like NeoGAF / ResetERA, Kat used this platform to inject her views into articles that had nothing to do with politics. What's worse is that she got various bands' shows shut down, spread rumors about Deicide that led to them being targeted with bomb threats by Antifag related groups, doxed Robert Deathrage (the singer from Meat Shits), gave favorable coverage to absolute nobodies and so much more.
Those 2 mags were the only nationally distributed metal publications available at the time, and smaller and more honest underground/regional mags (such as Pit Magazine and No Glam Fags) didn't have the reach and the distribution to compete, even though they were just as professionally produced. While experienced and knowledgeable fans didn't bother with Ludwig's shit, the younger entry-level fans got mislead big time. It was basically a non-internet gamergate 20 years before gamergate. She eventually was shitcanned but had staffed the magazine with enough fellow travelers to keep her agenda going a few more years before they went out of business.
The story does have a happy ending though. Ludwig died a horrible agonizing death from cancer a couple years ago and was financially destitute when she died.
As the old adage goes, "The more things change, the more they stay the same."

M-A doesn't accept cover/tribute bands. Doujin/touhou bands fall into that category, since they have no original material of their own. What original work they do possess still needs to be sufficiently metallic.
I'm wholly unfamiliar with weeb bands, so this is beyond my jurisdiction. A cursory search for Demetori and SSH reveals they're both weeb bands, so unless they start making sufficiently Metal ORIGINAL material, then they're to be treated as cover bands.
Power Glove got the same treatment, which is why they're not on M-A.

Are you sure that was me? I discuss Richmond a lot but I've never seen skinheads there. I do have some stories relayed to me by an older family member who was doing some very sketching things around town in the 90s. Oregon Hill was pretty different in the 90s when it was inhabited by poor whites. Consequentially it was a rough neighborhood and they would kick the shit out of blacks. Mind you, this was before VCU had expanded up to Broad Street, and Gulpin Court hadn't been demolished yet, so the whole downtown vicinity was still very rough. Places like Carver and Jackson Ward being safe places to walk at night is a relatively recent thing. I mean hell, Grace st used to be one story tattoo shops a decade ago and now its 6 story bugman apartments.
There was a gang called "the stick kids" who'd lurk in Oregon hill and beat people with wooden rods, according to my brother. Strange Matter existed but was under a different name and management. Gwar was still a small time punk act. There was a jail across from Oregon hill where the WWII memorial is now. There was also a rough bar on South Pine street across from Pescados called the Chuckwagon. Even in my time I'd see elderly redneck men drinking on the curb there.
Like I said I've never seen a skinhead in RVA. The few far-right leaning people I did meet there generally tended towards pagan/black metal type imagery. I guess skinhead is just old hat at this point and volkisch stuff is proffered in far right circles.

What's worse is that she got various bands' shows shut down, spread rumors about Deicide that led to them being targeted with bomb threats by Antifag related groups, doxed Robert Deathrage (the singer from Meat Shits), gave favorable coverage to absolute nobodies and so much more.
I remember Metal Edge but I never really read it in detail. Like I said, I was coming of age around the time it was dying. I always assumed it couldn't compete with Metal Hammer offline and later MetalSucks online. Generally I'm not knowledgeable enough on metal magazines to really add anything of interest.
The last funny metal thing I remember reading was a blog called "That's Not Metal" where the guy would write rants about things he considered faggy, as well as "Angry Black Metal Elitists" which was also another comedy/rant blog. Both have been defunct for years.
