How much longer will the "calarts" style be around for? To be more specific the noodle arm, bean head, bean mouth, incredibly simple geometric bodies, etc. When will there be more animators doing their own style? I know indie animation is a thing, but in mainstream cartoons everything looks the same.

Because anime became more popular than Western animation these days. Leaves some days pretty salty about it.
Honestly I could sympathise, but one of the factors for anime's current popularity boom is due to the decline in Western entertainment such as CalArts and Tumblr garbage driving people away.
Unfortunately the West may never make another beautiful series like Gargoyles ever again. I heard the Ducktales reboot was good though.

To add on to the Calarts shitfest there's a new "Magical Girl Inspired" parody premiering on Syfy called "Magical Girl Friendship Squad" with a total of six episodes lasting 15 minutes each. Here's a link to the article and trailer.

It also has to do with how certain genres are rarely animated unless you go nip.
>straight action cartoons are dead. With near everything being an action comedy hybrid with heavy emphasis on the comedy.
>romance cartoons never really became a thing aside from disney . With romance being mostly a subplot thing in most cartoons.
> Only certain subgenre's or tones of genre media are made in the west. There is no dark fantasy, no epic fantasy, no space opera, no adventure cartoons that style themselves after anything but adventure time. It's very narrow in comparison to anime which still gets several shows in these genres, even with the glut of formulaic haremshit or isekai.

should also add that western adult animation is much narrower, with most shows aimed at adults begin shitty animated comedies or shit like this >>1071418 , with shows like venture bros being the exception to the rule. Those in charge of cartoon studios seem not to get how big a demographic teenagers/young adults are either, with no show explicitly pandering to their tastes and the shows that do acquire an audience like that being gutted because they don't buy toys.

You mean the anonymous Asians that the animation is outsourced to. They don't even use anime techniques, and anyone who thinks anime = lazy doesn't know shit about animation. If you mean anime has simple character design it's time to put down the crack pipe.

It's not so much a popular and obligatory art style as it is likely due to corporate mandate to try and shove what's worked on other shows into this just like they did anime-inspired cartoons in the 00's, and failing miserably (and a pinch of laziness from the cast and crew) and/or an overlap of styles from working closely together.
"Cal-Arts style" was a phrase John K. would use to describe shows he didn't like, such as Dexter's Lab, The Powerpuff Girls, even Animaniacs, because he felt that all of these people were graduates from these same schools, and were told to drawn a certain way he didn't approve of, and that phrase it's being re-appropriated again to describe this new "bean-face" trend going on with cartoons, which I agree is a problem; more so with the fact that executives can think they can plaster this look onto other reboots (see The Powerpuff Girls, Ben 10, Thundercats, and so on). And if you still don't get why that's such a stupid thing to say, most of these people didn't graduate from CalArts, and most that did made vastly different looking cartoons afterwards.
>Rebecca Sugar (Steven Universe) and Ian Jones Quartey (OK KO) Graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York
>Ben Bocquelet (Gumball) graduated from EMCA in France.
The only people who did graduate from CalArts that're used in that image floating around showing the beanfaces were Daron Nefcy (Star Vs.) and Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls), but even then Alex also worked for his classmate Thurop Van Orman immediately after graduating on Flapjack. Other graduates like Pendelton Ward, J.G. Quintel, Gennedy Tartokovsky (Dexter's Lab/Samurai Jack), Craig McCracken (PPG/Foster's/Wander Over Yonder), Lauren Faust, I could go on; the creator of Thundercats Roar - a.k.a. not the manbun guy - Marley Halpern-Graser isn't even from CalArts, he's from Canada.

Real champagne is only from the champagne region of France and under certain laws you can't call sparkling wine champagne unless its from France. Anime is only from Japan, anything that claims to be anime that isn't from Japan (or Japanese directed) isn't anime; the only exception to the rule is Japan itself where the term comes from. Oddly enough "anime" as a word actually originates from France, if my memory is correct.

"Anime" means animation in french, so regarding their origin, they call them animé.
>Anime is only from Japan, anything that claims to be anime that isn't from Japan (or Japanese directed) isn't anime; the only exception to the rule is Japan itself where the term comes from
That's why I prefer "japanese animation", even japanimation have more meaning than anime.

"Calarts" style doesn't exist, half of these cartoons had way more dedicated art for their pilots. Calarts is just a good place to learn and people from there often get hired so it looks like that's the shit they teach.
The truth is dickhead broadcasting companies fucking with the art style so they don't have to spend as much money on making the show. That's the real reason the "Calarts" style seems to exist. All of these cartoons (apart from Star vs.) have vastly different pilot art compared to the final product.
Although personally, Steven Universe really needed the art style change because holy shit was it fucking ugly.

I wouldnt be surprised if all those shows are contracted out to the same bugman sweatshop with the same people drawing and animating it.

As long as the instructors can easily maintain their coke, smack, and meth addictions as art teachers, American art colleges will continue to churn out garbage graduates with a marginal ability to draw or illustrate.
If you're an American who wanting to be a good animator who wants to go the college route, you'll have to go to East Asia or central Europe or Eastern Europe. Specifically, South Korea, Japan, possibly China, Belgium, France, Italy, or some former soviet republic. Or you can put in the work and go it without the schools like some did.
