It sounds a lot like you were transitioning from a standard american diet (aka SAD) directly to a plant-based diet, without any nutritional knowledge and probably little to no cooking experience. Of course you'll get anemic if you have no idea how to fuel your body once you remove greasy shit, your primary if not sole energy source from your diet. But that's your own fault, not the fault of vegans.

I myself became anemic the first time I tried going vegan and went back to eating meat (2 times a week max because I never liked meat, besides bacon) but now that I'm more educated I'm giving it another try being more mindful about what I'm eating and 6 months in, I'm doing better than I've ever been.

>In what country? I'm pretty sure I don't eat grass or sorghum, and I don't live in a drought-stricken area, so why should I care about the water?

The majority of cows are fed corn in order to keep it cheap for fast-food outlets. We could be using the fields used for growing corn and cattle for more sustainable fuel sources like plants and vegetables. Now assuming you're one of those "free-range organic grass-fed" meat eaters, that takes up even more land and is even less sustainable if everyone were to switch over to free-range grass fed beef.

Face it; the only reason not to go vegan is because you like the taste of meat.

 No.9473

>>9468

Neither. Milk isn't murder, and neither is meat, since murder refers to the killing of a human being, not an animal.

Now that that's out of the way, dairy products are harmful to our bodies, the environment, and by buying them you are supporting the veal industry since cows are artificially inseminated and their calves are taken away from their mothers soon after they're born so we can keep all the milk to ourselves while their mothers are milked dry by machines until they literally collapse from exhaustion, after which they are killed. Cows generally live up to around 20 years, but dairy cows only live an average of 5 years. The insane amount of stress put on these cows leads to painful infections such as mastitis and as a result milk contains a large amount of pus. Meanwhile, their babies are being chained up in veal farms preventing them from getting any exercise so their meat stays soft and desirable.

Cruel, but not murder.

Tell me, how would I sustain my gains and testosterone levels on a vegan diet?

Disclaimer: this post and the subject matter and contents thereof - text, media, or otherwise - do not necessarily reflect the views of the 8kun administration.

 No.9543

>>9508

You'd be doing so more effectively on a vegan diet, considering plants aren't pumped full of hormones to make them grow faster; your testosterone levels would in fact be more balanced. If you're under the impression that soy has estrogenic effects, keep in mind that these phyto-estrogens aka PLANT estrogens, and therefore have no effect on humans and animals, while the estrogens pumped into cattle is in fact processed by the human body and is proven to reduce testosterone in males. If you're still unconvinced, then don't eat soy, it's not a necessity for anybody. But most importantly, stay away from meat and dairy to keep your testosterone levels high.

i have nothing against vegans/vegan food in and of themselves, i have a problem with people like >>9465 not living and letting live. a lot of the food i cook for myself winds up being vegan just due to my style of not over-complicating certain recipes and not having a ton of money to buy meat with. lots of lebanese and indian dishes don't require meat in the first place, and that helps me out because i find it confusing that ethical vegans are apparently VERY concerned with trying to simulate meat. if you choose not to eat meat because you find the concept abhorrent (and not because of health reasons/environmental concerns/just disliking meat) why would you spend so much energy trying to find a chemically stabilized mutant of 8 different kinds of grains and soy to let you trick your brain into thinking its meat?

Dude, you're taking one small thing that I said out of context and calling me a dumbass. I said I'm not interested in gains. The best freerunners I know of are generally very lean and not very big at all. That's not to say they don't have muscle, but I never said I have no interest in muscle, I just have no interest in getting big. If gains doesn't refer to getting big and simply refers to getting in shape, then I take back my statement. However, in the context of >>9508, I'd say he was in fact referring to getting big, which is a topic in which I have no first-hand experience.

>>9609

> i have a problem with people like >>9465 not living and letting live

Maybe because most meat-eaters don't practice this with animals. Most vegans, I'd say about 80% of them actually just keep it to themselves. The other 20% are just more passionate; these are the people who actually want to see the world change for the better and are willing to go out of there way to do something about it. Personally, I'd be lying if I said that I have absolutely no problem with the fact that we as a species enslave and torture animals all to satisfy our taste buds especially when there's a lot of evidence that clearly demonstrates its negative effects on our health and the environment. It's ridiculous.

>i find it confusing that ethical vegans are apparently VERY concerned with trying to simulate meat.

Mock meat products are there to help people transition over to a vegan lifestyle. They're a dietary staple of nobody. Also, while I personally don't really like the taste or texture of meat, most vegans do, even if they don't want to admit it. Let's face it; a good chunk of the world's population would shamelessly proclaim that meat is delicious, but not everybody is comfortable eating dead animals. So let's say you're just starting out on a vegan diet and you do miss the taste of meat but don't want to cause any harm, then these plant-based "meat" products are just for you. Also, if you are going to "YOLO" on your plant-based diet, it might as well be with a plant-based food.

>if you choose not to eat meat because you find the concept abhorrent (and not because of health reasons/environmental concerns/just disliking meat) why would you spend so much energy trying to find a chemically stabilized mutant of 8 different kinds of grains and soy to let you trick your brain into thinking its meat?

First of all, you're describing a very small niche of vegans which I've never even heard of before. Most people go vegan for 3 reasons: environmental, health, and ethical. Considering eating meat has been a part of humanity for quite some time now (albeit nowhere near the quantities of meat we are consuming today), the concept of eating meat isn't exactly "abhorrent" for many people. And in the end, the animals don't really give a shit if you're trying to recreate the taste and texture of meat from plants. They're just happy that they didn't end up on your plate.

See people, this is what the shills post when a huge amount of people are moving away from the standard american diet. the meat and dairy industry's wallets are suffering so they are running around will the "99truth-1lie" scam that is often used everywhere.

>yea veggies are good! yea yea you know that! see! I said veggies are good so you can trust me now! oh yea and here is some more good advice, eat juuuust a little meat or no no, fish because that's totally different! eat juuuust a little fish too! its good for you! cmon!

it's like watching a fat person tell me "ugh my genetics are awful" as they chug a soda. then they tell me "hey buddy, it's totally okay if you drink just a little soda but ONLY sometimes or it's bad for you! they say this because they want to bring everyone else down to their level and feel less bad about themselves and usually don't even realize that they are subconsciously projecting bad advice unto others.

but you know what? FUCK IT. I'm not eating any mercury or polonium tainted fish or meat and dairy products full of hormones. I'm not drinking any fucking soda ever. I don't give a fuck. I can get all my vitamins and minerals, protein and fiber from fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, legumes, and herbs. I'm not even a doctor or a nutritionist. I'm just a normal fucking person who went 90% raw 100% vegan and lost 100 pounds in half a year. I did all my own research and don't even heat or cook fats anymore. I went from eating burgers, pizza, sometimes a salad, icecream, soda, chips, all that shit to eating carrots, apples, spinach, walnuts, oats, beans, and so on. I was a fucking blimp and now I'm between skinny-fat and ottermode. my cholesterol is at the best possible numbers the doctor could even give me, and my bloodwork comes back great. every day I eat a vareity of plant foods and I eat until I get full and then I stop. the bathroom has always been a good experience for me since my change. the only supplements I ever need to take are a certain brand of organic vegan b12 and D3 to avoid cyanide shit and that lanolin shit in cheaper brands.

people bitch and moan and say "veginz r mentul" but that's all they can fucking say. I'll say hi to you in a few years when you have all those health problems you could have avoided.

The thing about "a diet of meat, grains, veggies, fruit" etc is that the meat doesn't contribute to the healthfulness, it's the plant foods. "Health-conscious meat eaters" or "meat minimalists" are people who rarely eat meat, but on occasion do, and they still often struggle to keep up health-wise with people who cut the junk out entirely. Does someone who doesn't eat ice cream or drink soda have an eating disorder? I love that vegan icecream though.

OP here. I'm looking forward to ending the arguing and starting on the OC.

I'm a bit of a new vegan, so my cookbook atm is pretty small, but I've come up with a really good kale salad which will further perpetuate the myth that vegans only eat side dishes. I mean, besides the vegan shepherd's pie here >>9366, although that's a recipe I got from Jamie Oliver's Youtube channel.

So my kale salad consists of purple kale because I can't stand other varieties for some reason (too strong and bitter) which I roughly massage with an avocado that was mashed with nutritional yeast, salt, cayenne and grated raw garlic (that's optional). I then toss it with a chopped tomato, 1/4 can of chickpeas (135g), a tbsp of hemp seeds and a few finely chopped shallots. I then drizzle on a bit of sriracha because… I… I like… sriracha… Although once I run out of store-bought sriracha I'm going to make my own and fill up the bottle.

So i've been kinda interested in vegan-food lately, not to the point i'l "convert" into it but atleast change 3-4 meals in a week to vegan for both health and money reasons.

What i'm interested in what ingredients are the staples of vegan diet and what are the health benefits of those ingredients like say.. soy grouts (pic related if my translation is fuck'd) etc?

I know you can easily fuck up vegan-diet by eating too much certain stuff high in carbs/protein/sugar and such and then it's no different from just being typical omnivore who tries to eat atleast little bit healthier.

Not as bioavailable as whey (which just means use a bit more) but 50/50 mix of rice and pea protein powder supposedly makes a protein powder almost as complete (i.e., amino acid profiles) as whey.

I've also heard that hemp seeds are a complete protein and give loads of different amino acids.

they also say when you mix rice and beans they complement each other, but I don't eat rice/corn/wheat/or most proccessed or white things. I don't even eat any kind of potatoes or brown rice or whole wheat bread or pasta. I eat alot of dark colorful beans and peas because all that other shit makes me fat. also, it may not be as insanely bioavailable as whey but I could just eat more peas and by accident I would just get more fiber.

I could eat whey and get some amino acids, or I could eat lots of peas and beans and fruits and veg, nuts, and so on and assuming I ate enough I could get more protein (not that I need that much) but get loads of fiber and vitamins and minerals along the whey hue hue

"Modern foods are killing us: pesticides, chemical fertilizers, groth hormones, radically new genetically-modified crops, too much sugar, too much fat, too much meat. Primitive humans rarely ate meat, but when they did it was typically freshly-killed, always wild game, and usually after putting in several exhausting hours of chase, on foot, with sticks or handmade spears. We modern humans eat something like 3.5 pounds a week–a half-pound per day, every day–of domesticated, fat-laden, hormone-injected, antibiotic-laced, high-tech factory-farmed animal flesh. Little surprise that cancer and other ailments result."

The fuck is that garbage? If by primitive humans you mean primitive pre-hominids, then yes, they didn't eat much meat. Meat is what pushed our evolution. Modern man is a nearly carnivorous omnivore. We, like most animals, need plenty of fat to get proper nutrition. Unlike cows and gorillas, we can't turn plant based foods into fatty acids.

Animals like gorillas are hind gut fermenters. They have a huge long colon and a huge cecum. Gorillas eat mostly leafy greens. If a gorilla eats a kilogram of food, about 900 grams of that is water. Of the remaining 100 grams, 11.8g (47 kcal or 58%) is protein, 7.7g (30kcal or 37%) is carbs, and 0.5g (4.5kcal or 5%) is fat. Surely gorillas thrive on a low fat diet? Nope. This does not take into account the short chain fatty acids produced through hind gut fermentation. You see, from the remaining mass of his food, which is cellulose, he ferments about 148kcal of short chain fatty acids, which I will note, are saturated fats. This brings his nutirtion to 20.5% protein, 13.1% carb and 66.4% fat. Where have I seen macros like that before? Maybe in a supposedly meme diet?

Cows are largely the same, except they are foregut fermenters. They have a series of chambers before their true stomach, where bacteria ferment the grass and other greens they eat into fatty acids before primary digestion instead of after. The carbohydrates a cow eats get digested by the fermenting bacteria. A cow's macros end up being 70-80% fat and 20-30% protein. Since the bacteria eat all the carbs, the cows end up with a whopping 0% carb diet.

Carnivores eat herbivores. Guess what carnivore macros look like? 70-80% fat and 20-30% protein. It's actually the same as an herbivorous cow, just from a different source. They also prefer the fattier parts of the animals they kill. In fact, if you look at the macros of any mammal, you will find they are all approximately the same. This includes humans. At one point millions and millions of years ago the creatures we descended from did eat mostly plants. We still have a vestigial cecum. We call it the appendix. Instead of being multiple feet like a gorillas, it's just a few inches. It's not used for much these days, except maybe a place for good bacteria to hide if we get an infection.

Anthropologists and missionaries have been telling us what endogenous and primitive people have been eating for a few centuries now. Do you know what they report? These primitive peoples eat about 60-80% fat, 20-25% protein, and 0-15% carbs. Eskimos would be on the lower carb end, while certain south American and tropical cultures would be on the higher carb end.

Archaeologically speaking, at the earliest hominid sites we've found in Africa have had tools made for cutting flesh, and the hominid bone have been found next to large piles of discarded animal bones. Cave painting from around the ENTIRE WORLD in Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas clearly depict the hunt. This was the most important part of these people's lives. There aren't similar painting of fruit trees or green smoothies. Whenever we've found hominid coprolites fossilized turds they have contained fossilized bird bones, small mammal bones, and fish bones, and even a few feathers, but never plant seeds nor fibers until about 50000 years ago.

About two and a half million years ago, hominids had a sudden jump in brain size. Before then, hominid brains held steady at about 350ml. Then suddenly, our brain size climbed to over 1500ml. So what happened then to make our brains grow? The first ice age started. The vast majority of the planet had a climate similar to Greenland. These ice ages lasted until just a few thousand years ago. Plants suddenly became a lot less common. Around this time, we also see a change in dental development, with the molars shrinking and the canines and incisors getting larger. Again, this is indicative of switching to a meat based diet, which requires much less grinding. The only animals around were fatty mammals. We also know these early hominids cracked open the skulls and bones to get the fatty brains and marrow. This animal fat contains the 20 and 22 chain fatty acids we now know as the essential fatty acids. Like most carnivores, we have little to no ability to convert the plant based 18 chain fatty acids such as ALA to 20 and 22 chain fatty acids like EPA and DHA. Some people are better at it than others, but you would have to eat a ridiculous amount of flax sed every day to convert enough to useful amounts of EPA and DHA. Luckily for vegans, there are some kelps that make small amounts of DHA and EPA that can be extracted and used as a supplement. The point is, without this source of preformed 20 and 22 chain fatty acid in the diet, our brain could never have grown. This is the reason why studies have shown that long term vegans have shrunken brains. They aren't getting the levels of essential (and often non-essential) fatty acids they need to maintain them.

Well, I've written enough of a massive wall of text for today. If anybody wants, I can go into like vegans, human brains in general have shrunk since about 90,000 years ago when we started eating less fat. I can go into Kleiber's law and how compared to most mammals, we have a very oversized brain and a very undersized digestive tract to compensate for it. I can get into ancient and classical references on how fatty meat was prized. The vegans can cry and scream over malformed cherrypicked studies all they want. Humans should be eating mostly meat. Fatty meat at that.

Veganism to me is just another fruit of mentall illness in most cases. I know two guys who became vegans/vegetarians in their 20s. Same pattern with both. Both were dissatisfied with their lives, jobs and relationships (or in one case the lack of) and basically with themsleves and both used veganism as a way to punish themselves and bathe in their misery. At the same time they used it to gain the moral high ground: "Well, you have a good career and a nice gf and you SEEM happy BUT you eat animals and that's wrong and you are in reality a bad and irresponsible person that is resonsible for [long list of stuff]. I in contrast sacrifice so much and get mocked instead of thanked…"

I'd say the health of both deteriorated in the following years. Often sick, one gained a lot of weight by replacing meat with chocolate the other started to lose his hair quickly. Also both became pretty insufferable over the years and I'm glad I no longer have contact with them.

The food is not very filling and every vegan I've interacted with personally has been into weird things and chose to be a vegan initially for reasons not concerning its morality despite saying so.

I actually like finding vegan recipes too, anon. Usually I'll add meat to them anyways, but they come up with some cool ideas when they're focused on making good dishes instead of meat substitutes. I discovered these apple-based sausages one time that went great when cooked in bacon grease. An egg, cheddar, and BBQ on black bean/hemp burgers can be pretty good as well.

I appreciate the importance of vegan meals as a part of a whole diet. After Lent, I want to get into a better balance where the meat eating is down to 3 or 4 times a week instead of daily, and including more vegan/vegetarian meals instead. What's really frustrating is that most vegan and vegetarian meals tend to be incredibly "ethnic" in style and ingredients. I've got a few "American" style meal ideas I want to test out. Succotash Salad, Rice Pudding (w/ Oatmilk), and a Rhubarb Crumble Caserole. Will report on success, but if you have any suggestions for "American" vegan recipes, please suggest.

Any Chilli recipe is pretty easy to make vegan, as meat can be easily replaced by lentils, skipped, or one of the meat substitutes. Cheese/cream in Risotto could be skipped. If you haven't already, you could also try making ratatouille, as it uses no meat. Some people use jack fruit and squashes as a meat substitute in certain dishes, but results are mixed in my experience.

There are also banana ice cream, which use blended frozen bananas instead of cream and milk.

>most vegan and vegetarian meals tend to be incredibly "ethnic" in style and ingredients

That's because nutrients that are obtained from animal products in American cuisine need to be provided by plants in Vegan diet. So you need to turn to dishes and ingredients from places that did not commonly eat diary or had limited access to meat or certain animal products. Since vegan diet was not feasible until second half of the 20th century, proper vegan cuisine and its regional verities had no time to develop. Instead it is a Frankenstein monster of various foreign dishes and supplements to compensate for lack of animal products.

You could try using jackfruit in place of meat in BBQ pulled pork/sloppy joes. I ate it on few occasions and its pretty good. I haven't cooked it myself, but going for brined jackfruit in cans is probably the best option, since raw jack fruit fucking reeks and is a pain in the ass to deal with.

Some vegan staples are actually very good depending on situation. I like to use nutritional yeast to thicken sauces and to give them more flavor. Quinoa is very good at making salads filling and to give them more interesting textures and flavor. I also find oat milk better than regular milk for protein shakes, as shaker bottle does not reek if not washed immediately after finishing the shake.

I understand why, but it's still a bit annoying. But the fun of working around that vastly outweighs the annoyance! I made the Oatmilk Rice Pudding and it's very tasty! A good breakfast or dessert, and, if tweaked a bit, maybe a good dinner.

4 Cups of Oatmilk

3/4 Cup White Rice

1/2 Cup Brown Sugar

1 tbsp Salt

Ground Allspice to taste (~1-1 1/2 Tbsp)

Preheat oven to 375, mix all ingredients in a bowl, pour into a small-medium sized baking pan (I used a loaf pan), bake for 45 minutes. Remove from oven, stir the contents thoroughly, put back in for another 45 minutes or until top of pudding is golden brown. Let stand for 5 minutes and enjoy!

The great thing about this recipe is its versatility. You can swap just about any part of it for a reasonable alternative; almond milk, coconut milk, brown rice, white sugar, etc. Though you may want to add something that can help solidify it if you do substitute the Oatmilk or Brown Sugar. Maybe a molasses or flour or a banana, just a little though. You can even add in raisins, oranges, or other fruits or even granola to improve the taste. Same with spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, or cardamom. I think next time I'll remove it from loaf pan and brown the bottom for a more crispy treat! As it stands, it's pretty hearty and homely, if I can figure out a way to make it a bit savory it would be a great dinner!

Also, next time I'll try using rice milk. The oat milk, while very tasty, is very strong and overpowering. With rice milk, it may give it a more unique flavor.

Mass production of vitamins and other dietary supplements started in the 1950s. Early 1950s was also roughly when discovery of B12 happened, its significance was fully realized years later, B12 supplements entered production years after that, and development of modern B12 enriched foods took years following.

Besides that, until mid 20th century many commonly used meat substitutes like tofu were rarities and there was little infrastructure to support these imports. Generally, people had significantly choices when it comes to widely available foods. In most cases people could choose between not consuming animal products or meeting nutritional needs.

If you would want to become a vegan in 1940s, you would just be unhealthy or die due to being unable to meet your nutritional needs. Especially if you lived in a region with long or harsh winters. Even today certain nutrient deficiencies are somewhat common among vegans but nearly absent in non-vegan populations.

Can I ask for some recipe suggestions please?

I'm looking for a kind of home made snack bar. Something not just full of sugar and syrup. What vegan snacks you can make at home would you recommend?

I don't mind if it's not strictly vegan, like eggs are fine and I can use milk alternatives. Only rules is no tomatoes or soy. Anything else I'm open to or happy to adapt a meat eating recipe with vegetarian options like Quorn.

Is jello even vegan? I'm pretty sure it comes from boiled animal bones.

>>16243

Get some dates (preferably medjool but any will do) and raisins and blend them, the ratio should be about 4:1. Get roughly the same amount of cashews and ground them but not finely. Mix the cashews into the the fruit mixture, flatten and cut into rectangles. Whatever size you prefer.

Stick them in the fridge for a bit and let them cool. You can eat them from there, but they'll be a bit sticky. You can cover them in a thin layer of chocolate as well, it stops them from being sticky.

Trust me, these things are great. You can do anything you want with them, add any ingredient. You can throw in coconut, or cinnamon, or figs, or cut up glazed cherries, etc.

Try these even if you're not vegan, because I'm not. They're cheap and easy to make.
