No.3307 [View All]
Seattle’s $15 minimum wage law goes into effect on April 1, 2015. As that date approaches, restaurant across the city are making the financial decision to close shop. The Washington Policy Center writes that “closings have occurred across the city, from Grub in the upscale Queen Anne Hill neighborhood, to Little Uncle in gritty Pioneer Square, to the Boat Street Cafe on Western Avenue near the waterfront.”
Of course, restaurants close for a variety of reasons. But, according to Seattle Magazine, the “impending minimum wage hike to $15 per hour” is playing a “major factor.” That’s not surprising, considering “about 36% of restaurant earnings go to paying labor costs.” Seattle Magazine,
“Washington Restaurant Association’s Anthony Anton puts it this way: “It’s not a political problem; it’s a math problem.”

the entitlement usually comes from the front of house, where tips will usually average out to about $20 an hour even in shit mom'n'pop diners. the issue that needs resolving is the fact that most kitchen workers are horribly underpaid, subject to straight up negligently dangerous conditions, and regularly work overtime hours without receiving compensation. for whatever reason, the restaurant industry is one of the few manual labor occupations that isn't at all unionized, so owners tend to take advantage of it. add to that the fact that many kitchen workers are functionally illiterate, uneducated, may have criminal records, etc.

>regularly work overtime hours without receiving compensation
Indeed, even here in developed first world country in Yorop this is a clear case.
Working at most restaurants is goddamn taxing on you both mental and physically for the pay it offers.
The few places i've interned or worked at have allways been understaffed in fact most private restaurants actually use interns as a source of labor.
The latest place i interned was a nice mom'n pop lunch-diner with buffet and everyday it was clear they desperately needed to hire an extra pair of hands and even when after a few weeks they got 2 more interns in addition to me (the place had 3chefs+the owners son who dealth with paperwork etc) and still the workload on everyone was fucking crazy.
Looking back i dont wonder why people get more and more depressed and burn't out with jobs like that and why after work and even in weekends they just open the Talmud Vision and laze it on the couch until it's monday again. Thank god my country so far has a decent welfare system so i can just neet it off and occasionally "work" few days a week at some small shift the employment or welfare office throws at me which isnt that often

Personally for me, while I'm also in support of higher wages, I think there should be a buffer in place to help protec lower income buisness
If anything, the higher wages should be mainly at those large chains that could probably easily afford it and not a small town family owned buisness

> The remaining 4 percent has been the profit margin, and as a result, in a $700,000 restaurant, he estimates that the average restauranteur in Seattle has been making $28,000 a year.
This isn't as unlikely as you might think. A lot of restaurant owners are basically poverty line - in terms of what they pay themselves. That being said, in a small neighborhood restaurant the restaurant is often the ground floor, and there are apartments above. If the restaurant pays for the rent/mortgage on the whole building, then 28K/year is actually quite good. Using a corporation to pay for your things while you shelter yourself from having a high income is a great tax strategy. The business probably owns his cars for him, other real estate interests, and so on. This works out because although we in America have a high corporate tax RATE, that rate only applies to the profits a business shows after expenses. So it's a good strategy to keep your own income low in these cases, just enough to put some money in an IRA and put your kids into a decent school
