Actually an age-old tradition found around the world. Here in Belgium there's the "Krakelingen" feast, marking the end of winter. People lit bonfires, throw bread at each other and drown young herring in wine, which is then swallowed alive. The first written testimony of the event dates back to 1393, and even then it was described as "centuries old". Nowadays it's part of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

In France they used to drown ortolans (a type of bird) in Armagnac, also a a custom dating back centuries. The dish was so popular that the bird almost went extinct.

In case anyone was wondering why they ground up tampons and maxi pads, it's because these grinders are primarily used for grinding up things in sewage that shouldn't be there. Lots of time people flush tampons, pads, and condoms. These things shouldn't be flushed, even in top tier first world sewage systems.

Now you know.

Check the thrift stores.

There were some pretty well made handcrank powered slicers back in the 1950s and 1960s, and now a lot of the people who had them are dying.

They're getting migrated from grandma's basement to the estate auction or thrift store.

Modern ones, electric power and the like, can be readily had at hunting supply outfitters. Gotta do something with the kills, apparently slicing it up for jerky is popular.

A lot of the new ones are junk below the $100 range.

You might check a used restaurant supply warehouse; that can get you a commercial slicer with a big razor sharp smooth (not serrated!) blade and slides that are designed to run smoothly forever.

Or, you know, make friends with old grandmotherly types. They probably would be thrilled if some of their old gear went to someone who will actually USE it, instead of into the rubbish, now that they don't slice up hams much anymore.
