What is Buddhism? Explain it. What is its relationship to Christianity? Was the Buddha onto anything?

1. Belief that some ancient Indian king who became a monk also happens to be devine and people can become divine and achieve enlightenment like he did

2 No relationship to Christianity - based on Hinduism (the belief in reincarnation and looking for a way to escape the cycle or reincarnation and the belief that our current lot is due to our sins or good behaviour in past lives - ie. paris Hilton was a saint in a past life and the sick children in the lukemia ward deserve it because they were jerks in a past life) it's a sick demonic theory.

.

3 No Buddah was not onto anything - giving up desire is a stupid and impossible task, meditation has no scientific support behind it and the whole thing about the middle path is literally a logical fallacy called the middle path where people believe that

the middle point between two extremes is always correct

(not true, sometimes extreme positions are true and the compromise between two points is not necessarily true or good).

All in all Buddhism is a false religion and like all other false religions it causes pain and hardship, notions of karma and reincarnation are responsible for wealth inequality, disregard for the poor and high suicide rates in countries where Buddhism is popular

Like all false religions we should speak against it, show it is irrational and try and convert people to the true faith

It was a sort of Hindu reformation that said that the polytheistic deities themselves are subjects to karma/birth-rebirth and mortal though they exist in some kind of alternative reality. It posits rigorous meditation and introspection, austerity and freedom from desire in order to actually liberate oneself from Karma and birth-rebirth. Actually believe in heaven and hell but there's a million different worlds between that get progressively worse/better since they are of different karmic quality.

Buddhism is a trans-cultural eastern religion based on an idea of enlightenment, that there's some sort of greater knowledge or state of being that you can arise to. It dramatically restates itself wherever it moves.

The key figure is Buddha, who achieved such enlightenment.

There is overlap in some basic tenets of our religion and theirs, like prioritizing nonviolence and discipline, but ultimately they do not make the historical claim that the Messiah came and died for your sin, and you can be saved by belief.

Not a Bhuddist but I do have some family connections with Buddhism. I believe it's all about reaching Nirvana and constantly working on your karma. A Buddhist once gave me an illustration, think of yourself as a glass of water, any bad that you do is like pouring some salt inside of that glass of water. In my opinion, Buddhism has more in common with Satanism and Humanism in that we worship one's self and other religions in that we constantly work on our own salvation like Mormonism or Islam, although of course they will never frame it that way.

He was way before his time, there is a lot of ways to look at buddhism but one way is "you are going to die and when you die that's it, nothing else happens so come to terms with that"

and that's pretty based

Why yes, we Seventh-Day Adventists are in full agreement with Bhuddhists in that we believe in soul annihilation and soul sleep after death. Perhaps you should be the one reading the Clear Word Bible.

maybe the RCC has such a policy but you explicitly can not be a Christian and buddhist. The four noble truths of Bhuddism are contradictory with the Bible.

Lots of things are contradictory with the bible such as learning about the earth going around the sun, buddism still has lots of things to teach you even if it's not series cannon

Lost humans seeking to make sense of the universe, but for some reason or another, did not find God, and instead settled for human wisdom.

Some of its teachings have wisdom, and some of it could even benefit you, but even that is irrelevant if you don't know God.

We have no proof to spiritual s—s, cuz it's immaterial.

BUT we have studies about near-death experience. It's the closest thing we get to it.

Anyway it shows how buddha's teaching is only for this world.

If only we could convert dalai lama into catholic/orthodox.

Mainline Buddhist's teach reincarnation, in which they're taught to try to break free from. Even in my years as an atheist, these guys seemed nuttier than most religions. If there's nothing after life, wouldn't it make sense to desire extending our existence here indefinitely? Christians seem to have a better grasp of what they want by comparison in this regard.

I remember asking a Buddhist promoting their nonsense on campus once about this, and his answer to if humans ever created immortality, was the only way for Buddhists to remain consistent was to abstain from it, since the goal is to reach Nivana.
