For millions of years, the earliest humans lived as tribal nomads. They lived in extremely small groups, merely surviving off of the land. That is all about to change. It is the Neolithic Age, and your people have taken the first step towards modernity. By setting up the very first permanent settlement, you will be building the very concept of civilization with your own hands.

Welcome to Birth of Civilization Builder. Here, players will be taking on the role of a particular family that joins together with others to form a functioning community. All players will be working together to survive and thrive, while also competing for status and power within their forming society. You must strike a careful balance with your peers, as outside threats will routinely rear their heads, and infighting may lead to your destruction.

You can begin by rolling 1d100. I have a table of resources, and will reply to your post with your result. If you get the same result as a previous player, reroll. The resulting resource that I reply to your roll with will be what your family utilizes to contribute to this society. If it is a crop, for example, your family will be farmers. An animal will be either what your family domesticates or hunts. Feel free to write up any fluff you want at this stage, characterizing your family's contribution in this society.

After a good number of players have rolled, I will use the resources to determine your starting location and place it on the map. From there, turns will begin. Actions are 2d100. All actions taken in this game should be considered from a social and cultural standpoint. Technology will develop slowly, and as a result of cultural development more than anything. Rushing tech will not be particularly effective. It's more likely to work if developed in response to a specific threat or challenge, and with enough existing basis. Rather, more often your actions should consist of your family's practices and interactions with other player's families. You don't have to stick with only using your starting resource. You can find another one, or perhaps create social strata that don't require you to work a resource at all.

Results of action rolls will vary wildly depending on the difficulty of the action, but generally <40 means you made a poor attempt, 40-70 means you made a decent attempt, and >70 means you made a good attempt. Occasionally I will keep track of progress for certain things that require it, like large scale building projects.

Every turn, I will roll 1d100 for external events. These are generally neutral or bad for you guys. Rarely will something explicitly positive happen for you, and one of the best results you guys can hope for is "nothing abnormal happens".

Every turn represents an abstract length of time as I see fit. May be months, years, whatever. It's not important beyond what's necessary to maintain a reasonable timeframe for certain actions.

Anyway, that's all the rules. Try to have fun.

Eight families; their ancestors having lived near each other for thousands of years, sharing a common language, have all decided over the course of time to settle in one place. This is one of the first permanent settlements the world over, and marks a step into a new age. Here, in a hidden fertile valley tucked away at the head of a river, just a day's travel away from the harsh desert plateau in the shadow of the world's mightiest mountains, you all have begun to build a greater life. Beyond the means of your nomadic ancestors, you tend to plants that you yourselves have raised, build houses of mud brick, and support each other. Some of you may have been living here for some generations, and some may have just decided to join your peers. That is up to you. But the matter now is that the game begins with you all living together. Though your tiny village holds less than a hundred people, it may one day yet grow into a great city. However, for now, you all will just be doing what you can to survive. The past year was bountiful, and you all feel confident about the future.

This marks the beginning of Turn 1. There is no external event roll this turn. No players currently have any special titles or holdings. Fluff up your families, and roll your 2d100 actions.

The Ibarss Family. In the past they arrived from around the other side of the mountain bringing with them a domesticated feline. The current head of the family is Artabazus, and his favorite cat is named Artaxerxes. The cats can be seen hunting down the pest out of their hut and garden, keeping it in as good a condition as seen. The Ibarss family is known for being very healthy, and they keep a couple rough mud statues of cats about their door.

1 Try to supplement our diet with more meat. He stops by the river to quench his thirst and sometimes the cats follow Artabazus to the river or on his hunts.

2 The Ibarss family protects the kittens so they are more likely to grow up, they try to make better and more lifelike mud statues of cats so that the kittens feel like they are being watched over by the momma kitten and to keep bad animals away.

2. When planting is done Rand takes his spear and starts trying to hunt fish in river. River fish would allow Rand to trade for more things, and compliment shit tasting watermelons.

2. Craft simple tents from the hides of camels, these will prove more comfortable then the mud huts and allow us to move around!

The Istoren family has always been an active and happy one. They have developed a drink from their crop called cocoa and they claim it has given them great amounts of energy and that it tastes good with everything. Azlatan is the current head of the family and from his size it seems like he may have benefited most from this lifestyle.

1. Expand the orchards to increase our bounty of cocoa

2. Look for herbs that we may be able to add to our cooking pot.

In addition, another new family comes to join your settlement. The Mason family is one most of you know, as they have traveled the area for many generations and speak the same language as you all. They are skilled in making tools out of flint, and offer to take up such duties for this settlement as a whole.

>>53357

Artabazus and Artaxerxes head to the river to hunt, eager for more meat in their diet. The cat doesn't directly assist necessarily, but his presence makes it easier for Artabazus to spear the fish as they are caught unawares. He brings in a decent haul, enough to feed his family and their pets with nourishing meat regularly, but it's a bit too time consuming for now to try and take any more than that.

The Ibarss family also focuses on refining their mud cat sculptures. They are thought to offer protection for the young cats, and ward away danger. With practice, your family is proven to be very competent artisans, making cat statues about as lifelike as you could expect from mud. Not only are the young cats enamored, the rest of the villagers are also quite impressed. Your family's standing rises, and you are beginning to be held in high regard.

>>53358

Rand's method of only planting the best melons seems to be reasonable, as the next season comes around and few of the new batch are worse than the one before. He decides to keep it up because there's no reason not to. One day the results may be more notably evident.

As for fishing, Rand has little luck. He can catch a few here and there, but not enough to really sustain him and his family. He's not quite skilled enough to make the time and effort invested worth it. He'll have to practice more or find a more efficient way to go about this if he wants to get more out of fishing.

>>53359

New to the settlement, the Ichar family decides to use this fertile land to expand their camel herd. They don't have to do too much, as their camel population expands greatly with access to all this food and water. Camel meat and hide are now plentiful in the village, and the villagers are all grateful for the Ichar family to have joined them.

However, the Ichar family finds the mud huts of the village much less comfortable than the hide tents of their ancestors. They decide to go back to the old ways of housing, setting up tents where they please as they tend to the camel herds. They offer a bit less protection from the elements, but are more convenient overall.

>>53360

The Istoren family grows cocoa, a delectable treat. In an effort to increase their output, Azlatan plants more cocoa trees in an effort to expand their orchard. However, it ends up being futile. Some of the plants end up too close to the old ones or each other and die competing, some are planted in places that they don't get enough water, and so on. His crop only increases a bit, and much less than he would hope for all the effort he put in planting. It seems he will have to consider conditions more carefully if he wants to grow more cocoa successfully.

In contrast, Azlatan's search for flavorings goes quite well. In the hills nearby, he finds a type of chili pepper with a nice kick. It takes a bit of getting used to, but he thinks it could be a great taste to add to nearly any food.

One summer day, all seems calm. But the animals begin to act unusual. The camels stray away from their usual herding grounds, and the cats make an excessive amount of noise. A few hours into the day, the earth itself begins to shake. A great earthquake strikes, toppling trees, collapsing some mud huts of the village, and cracking the earth of the fields. A few villagers even die from falling debris. In the aftermath, everyone attempts to clean up and recover from this disaster.

1&2. Rand, after not eating for a few days and a little delirious from the heat, proclaims to all the other families that the spirit of their lost brothers are still bound to their bodies and will not leave this earth. He then takes the bodies children he lost and gathers the fallen trees. He burns the bodies in a pyre until there is nothing but ash. Marking out a plot of useless land outside the village and near his home, with straightened sticks with the tops cut into four and tied together again, he mixes the ashes with mud, keeping the ashes separate from each other, and asks the Ibarss to make them into cat statues. If anyone asks he says that if he is to stay on this world he would wish to stay somewhere beautiful.

Though not the most recent, the Arsachid Clan was one of the later ones to join, only arriving within a few generations. Unlike most clans who moved in huge groups, the Arsachid originally raided the areas they eventually settled on and off for decades, smaller clan branches claiming more and more of the area until the Clan head was finally convinced it was worth settling. The Arsachid Clan was very devoted to their desert life, using their knowledge of the area and its rough and dangerous terrain to their advantage in raiding those non desert dwellers. One thing convinced them to move. Dates. This fruiting tree had many, many uses, so many that the Arsachid considered them holy, and useful enough to give up their ancestral lands to get more of them.

1-2; Cultivate the Dates!!!!!! Get more more more more!

3; The Date Palms are very useful, they can be used for bedding, roofing, and insulation, to keep heat out and in, We should adapt the Date Palms to the rest of our village homes so we're more healthy to cultivate Dates.

Delirious and motivated in the wake of this tragedy, Rand decides that the spirits of the fallen villagers are not at peace, and comes up with funeral rites. He makes an area near his house into a graveyard, and places the statues there. All of the villagers are moved by this act, and begin to look to Rand as a sort of spiritual leader.

>>53366

The Ichar family takes their camel herd down the river for a while, but finds that in short order, the fertile land ceases and gives way to mostly dry savanna. Their miraculous pocket that they've set up their village in is anything but the norm. To keep grazing the camels, they are forced to stick right next to the river the whole time. Though they do see many groups of antelopes coming to drink.

Their attempts to breed milking camels are slow, as few seem to exhibit the traits they want. Further, many of the family can't even handle milk themselves, lessening the incentive.

>>53367

The Ibarss family is commissioned to make the memorial statues for each victim of the recent earthquake. They take to the task with gusto, and make very nice cat statues, each one with its own individuality embodying the person it is a memento of. The villagers all like the statues, and it's decided to keep up the tradition.

>>53368

The recent earthquake seems to have hit the date growing area particularly hard, and it's enough trouble just to get production back to normal. Unfortunately the Arsachid Clan couldn't expand their date production at this time.

The use of the fronds of the date palm prove extremely useful however, and the Arsachids start to use them for all kinds of purposes. Their homes are now outfitted with them after rebuilding from the earthquake, and the rest of the villagers look on in interest at the unique roofing and such.

>>53369

Azlatan goes around after the tragedy offering his new drink to try and lift spirits, and it proves to be a hit. From then on, many villagers often come around asking for another taste of the delectable treat.

To facilitate this, Aztalan attempts to grow his own peppers nearby. However, it's slow going, as they seem to take slightly different conditions than the cocoa trees. It will take a bit of getting used to before he can get a decent crop of peppers.

Rather than let himself be hounded for chocolate all the time, Azlatan comes up with an idea. At the peak of the harvest season, when he has the most of it available at once, he throws a great celebration called a festival. He brings a lot of chocolate to share, and the rest of the villagers also bring their own goods as well. It ends up being a fantastic party and everyone loves it. It's unanimously decided that it should become an annual tradition

Azlatan's efforts to cultivate chilis begins to pay off, and he now has a nice garden that consistently produces results

>>53389

You spend some of your time downriver hunting antelopes, and you manage to take down a decent amount of meat and pelts, but it is both exhausting and time consuming. It makes you easily understand why your peers decided on the settlement

Further down the river the scenery is not much different, but you catch glimpse of some other humans in the distance. You know from stories of your traveled elders that these are likely the Southern savanna nomads. They are said to speak a slightly different language, so communication could prove difficult. In addition, they are wary. They keep their distance as they watch you, not giving you any opportunities to get close

>>53390

You begin to get serious about your work as gravemaster, and discuss in advance proceedings for many tribe members. A lot of them have their own preferences, and now that you know, things should go quite smoothly when the time comes

You also train your children in your duties, and they take to it slowly, but steadily. You encourage other villagers to speak with their spirits of the departed through the statues, and only a few take you up on it right away, but it seems to make them feel a lot better. Perhaps the practice will spread with time

>>53394

The Ibarss family comes up with an ingenious idea to form clay into containers for food. They make bowls, plates and vases engraved with pictures of various foods. The idea spreads wildly, and the artistic talents of your family prove to be in high demand

Otherwise, Artabazus drills into his sons the importance of sustaining the martial traditions of their ancestors. The family still gets a good portion of their diet from their own hunting, owing to the large amount of cats they have, and it's made sure that they keep their prowess up

>>53396

Taking a break from trying to expand their date cultivation, your family heads to the mountains. Flint is not good enough a material in your eyes for weaponry, you are sure that there must be a better alternative. After much time searching, one of you finds a jet black rock of remarkable sharpness. You only find the one, so you don't know how rare it might be, but it has astounding cutting power

1 The mixture of bone ash and wood ash makes for a beautiful glaze. We can experiment with different woods and bones from animals, when not making funerary statues, to attempt for different colors.

Seeing the water resistant virtue of the plates gave the Ibarss family an idea to make many plates and adorn the roof of their hut for when the rain eventually relieves us of this dry spell to stop any leaks.

2 However, after the first batch they realize that if they aren't the same shape and size it won't fit very well. The Ibarrs family tries to measure out lengths in marked sticks along hands, feet, and fingers. The cats enjoyed playing with the sticks.

2. While Azlatan is quite content with his two wives he has a bunch of children that will need to have a mate of their own. Rather than just waiting until they are of age and then wait even more until they find someone. He goes preemptively to the village to see the other patriarchs about arranging marriages ahead of time and come to a deal. Rand and his wife successfully build a new structure connected to their house for the purpose of storing food for extended periods using these new vases. It goes decently well for the most part

However, the vases full of mashed melons and dates are left to sit too long and end up becoming a disgusting slop. Your wife tries just a tiny drop and get nauseous enough to want to throw it all out

>>53401

Your clan tries to formulate a way to hunt from range. Throwing spears is still a bit closer than you would like, and one of you comes up with the idea of throwing rocks. However, your arms alone are surely not good enough to cut it. Some of you still think the idea has merit, but you'll need to think outside of the box

Meanwhile, you set up a huge camel roast where you know the nomads will be able to see you. You set out plenty of goodies to lure them in, and your plan works. A small group cautiously approaches, and you wave them in invitingly. They partake in the feast, and you all have a good time. Indeed, your languages are different, though many basic words share some similarities, so the gap is surely not insurmountable

>>53402

The Ibarss artisans begin to experiment a bit more with their sculpting material, and find some ingredients that give the final product a wonderful finish. Their works are now even more beautiful, and they figure out enough to be able to make their works black or white depending on the additives

They also try to standardize measurements to make things the same size, but run into a problem. While the artisans all start measuring with sticks and appendages, several artisans are very different sizes, and the sticks people use are also all different lengths. Their works end up being internally consistent, but not to each other's works

>>53407

As Rand's wife is about to throw out the gross mush, Azlatan intervenes, thinking he can make something of it. At his insistence, he is given the vases and their contents. However, even his known exotic tastes can't work with any of this, and he ends up vomiting many times for the trouble. Somehow even after this, he ends up thinking it's not without potential

Otherwise, Azlatan goes around talking marriage prospects for his young children. While he gets a couple of agreements, it doesn't do much to bind him closer with any other families quite yet. At least it seems he won't have to worry about the guaranteed continuation of his family line, for now

Your family invests quite a bit of effort into expanding date production, and it finally begins to pay off. With a huge amount of trees, you're finally pulling in a large surplus of dates every harvest season

As for the stone, you manage to search farther up the mountain and find a vein with plenty of it. This obsidian turns out to be fantastic for cutting tools, putting the old flint ones to shame. In fact, it's so sharp that it's a bit tricky to haft onto a handle

>>53412

After a bit of experimenting, Viola manages to get something somewhat drinkable. She's not sure how well this could possibly catch on, but she hands the crude alcohol off to Azlatan

Meanwhile, Rand beseeches the spirits for rain, and devises his own ceremonial rain dance. The villagers are impressed at the sight, and rain does in fact follow the next day, so they are all convinced of its efficacy

>>53413

The Ibarss family kicks off a custom of growing small plants in vases filled with soil. It's not much, but it helps to sustain the family without too much work. In addition, they help propagate the use of their vases to carry water for plants, which many other villagers pick up for some of their own crops

The artisans all get together to designate a head artisan, whose measurements they end up using. Filing all the reference sticks to match up, their works are now all consistent across the board

>>53416

To promote his wonderful children, Azlatan devises a plan for the next festival to have a series of games for the children of the village to compete in. He has his kids practice hard for a long time, and it pays off, as they impress everyone with their skills come harvest time. They become admired by the other children of the village, while the adults expect them to grow into fine adults themselves

His experiments with the crude alcohol do not go quite as well. He tries to cook some food with it in a heated bowl, but none but him end up being able to stomach the result. Azlatan writes it off to taste, and continues with alternative recipes others may hopefully like

>>53418

You begin to experiment launching spears with other sticks. The premise seems to have promise, but the execution is far too difficult for any of you to pull off yet. In the cases that you manage to actually hold the stick and spear steady long enough to launch it, your accuracy is way off the mark. It does seem to get more speed and distance than by arm, though

You try to trade some sweet fruits of the oasis to the nomads. They offer up some meat and hides, but it's nothing you haven't seen before. You get the feeling that there is surely more they could offer, they just are not yet willing

Azlatan finally makes a huge breakthrough when he sets fruits and meats aside in alcohol to sit for long periods of time. When he comes back weeks later to test them, he finds them still perfectly edible. He also finds that eating a lot of them makes his head light and mood chipper

In such a mood, he goes to Artabazus to try and explain an idea he had for a special pot that can make purer alcohol. However, he slurs and stumbles over his description, and the man doesn't really understand. Exasperated, Azlatan shares some of his alcohol soaked dates instead

>>53423

The Ibarss family tries to standardize the making of house building materials, but unfortunately, they try to do so after being gifted a great many alcohol soaked dates. They try to work, but stumble all over themselves and get nothing done

After that embarrassing episode has passed, Artabazus gathers the clan to try and hash out the method they will use to keep themselves eminent in the future. It's a good thing he did, since the topic sheds light on what could have been a nasty conflict. His son, who is close to of age now, has been concerned about the traditional hunters and cat-rearers being displaced by the artisans that have quickly risen to prominence. Many share the sentiments. This issue blocks any proper organization for the time being, but tensions in the family are now in the open rather than festering in silence

1. All this talk of the earth mother and such gave Azlatan an idea. If the earth was a woman then naturally she wants to mate especially if she apparently already had kids. He is also the pinnacle of masculinity which means out of all the men he is the best candidate to do so. Getting advice from Rand about digging a giant hole and fasting (a little dates wouldnt hurt anyone) he prepares the ritual that would see great fertility befall upon his house.

2. Noticeably less drunk than before. Azlatan tries to actually explain what he wanted with the alcohol distillation.

You set up regular trade with your new relatives in the south as they begin to build their own village along the river. They are quite thankful for crops in particular, as they need to start growing some themselves to sustain the village. In return, they trade many types of meat and hides from various savanna animals that they regularly hunt, as well as red dyes which they claim are very valuable

Further south from the new village, your clan travels until coming upon a steep drop. A large waterfall takes the river down to the lowlands, and in the distance you can see the savanna give way to forest. And the sheer size of this forest puts the one around your home to shame

>>53439

The Aldaeri family emerges from the woods with intent to join the village. To this end, they bring gifts. They share their carved wooden containers, which make a good alternative for pottery in certain circumstances. The villagers take them gladly, happy to know that the crafters of such will be living here from now on

They also share the devices they devised to call waterfowl, carved from the same alder. They aren't perfect, but blowing into them makes a sound with a clear resemblance to the calls. The waterfowl population here is low, so they aren't exploited too much, but the creation is considered potentially useful nonetheless

>>53440

The Montastel also choose this time to come to the village, leaving behind the nomad life. As their first effort after joining the settlement, they go out to hunt as they have always known. With the help of their hawks, they find some success catching hares, but keeping them in great numbers seems like a fool's errand, as they run away any chance they get

They also gift their new neighbors some of their hawk feathers, which are regarded as quite beautiful. The token is appreciated by the villagers

>>53441

The Ibarss artisans try to put down the dates and get back to work, but while they get the actual measurements decided on, no bricks actually get made. There is too much tension on the topic of succession, and it keeps anyone from working effectively

On that note, Artabazus makes his decree that the clan head must prove himself in their ancient skills, regardless of how much they become artisans. His metaphor with the plates seems to go smoothly, and everyone accepts his decision

>>53442

With his fields back to normal, Rand expands his watermelon production a bit. He starts to get a bigger surplus, and soon enough has a good amount to trade

He also hobbles over to the newly joined Aldaeri clan, and speaks with them as the village shaman. He learns of their beliefs on the spirits, and tells them of the village's own. While he doesn't convince them that using the spirits in their tools is bad, they are quite impressed at the sight of the grave statues, and the notion of being able to speak with the spirits of their ancestors this way

>>53443

Azlatan comes up with a drunken idea to commune with the earth in a homemade fertility ritual. He digs a hole and disappears down it for many hours before his kids eventually drag him out. All he gets for his trouble is a massive headache and stomach trouble from being drunk and hungry, as well as scrapes and cuts all over his body. He doesn't feel like this ritual worked

He goes back after sobering up to explain his kiln idea again, and he does a bit better, though the Ibarss family is a bit too preoccupied right now to really work things out, and tell him to get back to them

>>53444

Your family takes your new obsidian tools and makes out for the hunt. They find a decent population of wildebeest a ways out, and hunt them successfully for a good amount of meat and hide

With this, your family is spurred to organize your hunters into effective teams. The day may come when a conflict that must be met with violence arrives, and you will train just in case

1. Seeing Azlatan struggle to contact the spirits to improve his fields yield Rand steps in. Trading for a few dead hares he removes the bones and places the meat and blood into a clay jug with a lot of water. He burns the bones, crushes them to ash, and throws it into the mixture. He then adds water and earth, asking the spirits to give the vitality of the hare to the mixture, and mixes everything together into bloody mud. He then sloshes the mixture around the fields.

2. On the note of using the spirit of animals Rand gathers the bodies of cats that died of natural causes, and only those that died of natural causes, he burns the bodies and crushes the bodies to ash as he did in the previous burials. He then takes the ash and mixes them with clay. Forming the clay into small tablets with holes to put string through and marked with a cat's paw he asks the cat spirits to continue to watch over the tribe from the world of spirits and protect the wearers of these talismans from evil and pesterous spirits. He also warns the tribe not to ask him to make these with the bodies of cats that were killed as a cat that died hating a human would only become a cursed charm.

Without further ado, your artisans whip out a huge load of bricks, all congruently sized. You renovate a few huts with them, and they are not only functional, but look pretty nice too. Though there is the problem of potentially bumping into them too hard and knocking them over

Going back to the idea for plates to keep the rain out, the new system of measurements helps these tiles fit more properly, but there's still a bit of trouble keeping them from sliding off

>>53448

While the Ibarss incorporate clay into their houses, the Aldaeri go the other way and start to use wood. They can easily carve poles to prop up something simple like a hide tent that nomads use, for example, but they try to go beyond that and make a complex frame. By carving out slots to put more poles in, they can hook them all together. This results in a very sturdy tent construction that needs not fear any but the harshest winds

More woodworking is done, this time resulting in smooth canes meant to aid walking. Some villagers use them on long trips in the wilderness, but they more often find use from the elderly and injured to assist them

>>53449

Rand attempts to remedy Azlatan's botched fertility ritual, as he mixes in all matter of elements to bring vitality to the earth. He finds a bit later that he's invited a great deal of flies and other insects instead, and they do nothing but cause trouble

Not deterred, Rand makes charms intended to let the spirits of the cats watch over the village. He tries to limit it to only cats that died of natural causes, but while he is working, several of the charms crack ominously. You are sure you must have mistakenly made some cursed charms

>>53450

Your hunters make out once more searching for worthy game, and they come across the nearby herds of gazelles. There are a great many of them, and they should be easy to hunt regularly

Any attempt to keep them however, is an abject failure. Your hunters try to pile up wood to keep the gazelles that they capture alive contained, but they always jump right over and escape

>>53451

Your tribe goes back to working the camel skins, this time intent on producing a soft leather for clothing. However, all your attempts end up producing a hard and immalleable substance, impossible to wear comfortably

The use of hairs goes a bit better, but it is still quite difficult. Weaving proves to be extremely precise work, and a huge amount of effort goes into one simple blanket. You do make a few though, and they sure are comfy

>>53452

Your family makes to grow in size, and they do what they need to, at a greater rate than before. However, this increased effort results in quite a tough year, as more of your clan is unable to work and are busy child rearing. Productivity drops harshly, and the family has a rough time keeping everyone fed

In that time, some of you find that hyenas will come after a wildebeest hunt to scavenge. You can toss them some meat and they will eat it, but it's not clear whether the creatures can actually be tamed

>>53453

Azlatan gets back to focusing on his fields, and he manages to at least get his bug problem sorted out, so Rand didn't do any lasting damage. Efforts to expand the fields are stalled, however

The perilous trek is too much for your camels, and must be done on foot. You eventually reach the bottom. but the forest is no longer visible without the vantage point you had before. It would be quite a long journey to reach the forest without your camels like this. Though there is probably a longer way around somewhere that can accommodate them

The Ichar clan sends out men to hunt the bear. They track it down, but the fight is brutal. Three of your young men are killed and as many are wounded, though the bear does eventually fall

Back in the village, the women get to work on making new clothing. However, the work is extremely slow and difficult. Only a few sets get done, and at this rate it would be impossible to outfit the entire village

>>53468

The Montastel hastily build a hut to treat the wounded from the bear attack. It ends up being a shabby little thing, but it will have to make due

And make due it does, as many of the Montastel find that they have a gift for the healing arts. Setting limbs back in place, stanching wounds, they manage to keep nearly all of the wounded from dying from their injuries

>>53469

Your clan focuses highly on the extermination of hyenas. They don't manage to get them all, but they now often run at the very sight of you, and tend to stay away from areas around the village

Your efforts at finding another tamable animal fall flat once again, as all you're able to find this time is some mice

>>53470

The Aldaeri send their hunters to help the others take down the bear, and they fight valiantly despite the difficulty. Some of your hunters are wounded, but none are killed from your clan

Trying once again to carve wooden boards using the black rock, your craftsmen make a terrible mistake. They attempt to use the obsidian as they had handheld tools of other stone, and ended up cutting their hands up something fierce. They became unable to work while their hands healed

>>53471

Artabazus comes up with a plan to get the bear drunk with alcohol soaked dates. The plan is set up, but when the time comes, the bear ignores the bait and lashes out at the hunting party, causing widespread injury. His son is one among the wounded

>>53472

Azlatan is able to start growing the lavender much more effectively than the mint, and he starts to have a good amount of it available to him

Azlatan's wives make good use of these new herbs, with Pyra washing her clothes in a pot of water with some lavender thrown in for a pleasing scent. Bor has taken to chewing on mint leaves regularly to improve her breath, and suggests the same to many other villagers

>>53473

Before the hunt, Rand gathers the party before they set out for the bear, and blesses their journey, calling for the protection of the spirits. He stays back during the brutal fight, and gets others to help him retrieve the fallen to lay them to rest when all is done. Afterwards, many of the hunting party confide in him that they are sure they survived only thanks to the protection of the spirits

>>53476

After taking down the bear, you create a totem from its pelt and bones, and set it up in the middle of the village. Everyone who sees it is reminded of the magnificent feat it was to slay it, and the people's belief that the bear's spirit was made to submit leads to a sort of collective pride in the village. From now on, villagers will often present offerings at the totem, especially during the harvest festival

The women of your clan try to get together to figure out how to best make clothing, but they just end up arguing over whose way is best and they get nothing done

>>53477

While searching for medicinal plants, you come across a bay laurel tree, and take note of the oily leaves. After some application, you have reason to believe that it can help accelerate the healing of wounds when applied

You also go back to make some more proper huts, and end up having a good amount of space to treat the wounded, assuming you don't face a much worse disaster than this

>>53478

Thinking of a way to stick the bricks together more firmly, you try creating mortar. The idea seems solid, but you can't seem to quite find an effective mix. It ends up being too sticky and clumps together, or too liquid and can't hold onto anything

Besides the artisans that were involved in its creation, the rest of the villagers don't take very well to the symbol system. They feel like it's a waste of time, and they'd rather just remember what they need

>>53479

You get back to your planting, specifically starting on those strawberries. However, some pests slip by to get into your field and eat up most of them before they can grow

>>53480

Your craftsmen crudely cover their hands with leather strips, which does protect them, but it also takes a big hit out of their dexterity. They are able to make some of the desired boards, but the going is quite slow

Another has the idea to creating a pounding tool with a handle, entirely from wood. It's simple enough to plan for, but getting an effective result seems like it will take a bit more time, since the ones they end up making now are off balance, or poorly attached at the head

>>53481

Your clan leadership is hesitant to see the obsidian transferred around so freely, and starts putting measures in place to restrict it. From now on, a guard will attend to the source of the rock on the mountain, making sure no one else accesses it. Your family is also all told clearly that no bartering is to be done for more of the stone unless the deal goes through the clan head

Searching more and more for tamable animals, you finally find a population of llamas up the mountain a ways. They are fairly docile, and seem like they could be kept without too much trouble

>>53482

You attempt to get a good crop of mint going again, and this time you succeed. You start pulling in plenty enough to get most of the village nice breath if they wanted

You also try once more to make a distilling device, and it ends up being basically one pot upside down on top of another with a hole cut in it and a wooden carved tube sticking out. It's crude, but it does manage to do what you envisioned

As they get bigger, they start to cause trouble, attacking your cats and stalking the village's livestock. Eventually you are forced to let them loose in the mountains after you are sure they can fend for themselves

>>53486

You keep up work on the clothing despite the difficulties, and though you have trouble coming up with any particularly efficient methods, you get better at it all the same. You're at the point where you can make a few sets to trade away on occasion

At the cliff above the lowlands, you set up a simple outpost. It's nothing impressive, just a simple hut with a place to leave your camels, but it will do the job. You can now leave someone up here to watch them while a party heads down

>>53487

You tend more to your newly planted strawberries, and manage to make them multiply explosively. You have more strawberries than you know what to do with

You disapprove of the Arsachid clan restricting the trade of the obsidian, so you make it a policy to not trade with them until they ease up. Life goes on however, as the Arsachids have plenty of fruits of their own without need for yours, and no other families join in with you so far

>>53488

With the use of your new healing leaf oils, you manage to get nearly everyone in the village into healthy physical shape. Everyone feels great, and the village has never been in higher spirits

Wary of any potential violence that could be sparked from a rivalry, your family sets out to find another herb, this one decidedly less healthy. You end up finding a purple flower, that's unpleasant to even the touch. This Wolfsbane proves to be extremely deadly when tested on animals, and humans will no doubt fare little better. You doubt incapacitating is an option for this plant, this is a plant for killing

>>53489

Azlatan tries to distill various things with his new contraption, but the thing is shoddily built and the results are less than stellar. He can barely get much oil out for how much he puts in

Azlatan's son Cha goes to the Montastel to try and learn some of the healing arts, but it seems his timing is poor. When he asks, he's told that even if they wanted to, it's not possible, as they've just finished treating every single injury in the village and are now taking a long break. Maybe he will have better luck at another time

>>53491

They know of your custom to make guardian statues, but they do not approve. Perhaps it is because they only just moved out of their nomad ways, but they think the spirit should be free to go wherever it pleases above all else.
