1feaa0 No.53334 [View All]
For millions of years, the earliest humans lived as tribal nomads. They lived in extremely small groups, merely surviving off of the land. That is all about to change. It is the Neolithic Age, and your people have taken the first step towards modernity. By setting up the very first permanent settlement, you will be building the very concept of civilization with your own hands.
Welcome to Birth of Civilization Builder. Here, players will be taking on the role of a particular family that joins together with others to form a functioning community. All players will be working together to survive and thrive, while also competing for status and power within their forming society. You must strike a careful balance with your peers, as outside threats will routinely rear their heads, and infighting may lead to your destruction.
You can begin by rolling 1d100. I have a table of resources, and will reply to your post with your result. If you get the same result as a previous player, reroll. The resulting resource that I reply to your roll with will be what your family utilizes to contribute to this society. If it is a crop, for example, your family will be farmers. An animal will be either what your family domesticates or hunts. Feel free to write up any fluff you want at this stage, characterizing your family's contribution in this society.
After a good number of players have rolled, I will use the resources to determine your starting location and place it on the map. From there, turns will begin. Actions are 2d100. All actions taken in this game should be considered from a social and cultural standpoint. Technology will develop slowly, and as a result of cultural development more than anything. Rushing tech will not be particularly effective. It's more likely to work if developed in response to a specific threat or challenge, and with enough existing basis. Rather, more often your actions should consist of your family's practices and interactions with other player's families. You don't have to stick with only using your starting resource. You can find another one, or perhaps create social strata that don't require you to work a resource at all.
Results of action rolls will vary wildly depending on the difficulty of the action, but generally <40 means you made a poor attempt, 40-70 means you made a decent attempt, and >70 means you made a good attempt. Occasionally I will keep track of progress for certain things that require it, like large scale building projects.
Every turn, I will roll 1d100 for external events. These are generally neutral or bad for you guys. Rarely will something explicitly positive happen for you, and one of the best results you guys can hope for is "nothing abnormal happens".
Every turn represents an abstract length of time as I see fit. May be months, years, whatever. It's not important beyond what's necessary to maintain a reasonable timeframe for certain actions.
Anyway, that's all the rules. Try to have fun.

1. Spears, we were reinventing spears! Discontinuing work almost immediately upon realizing this. Instead we would take this sharp black glass recently discovered and work it into flat, thick carved wooden boards, with handles wrapped in leather for better grips. For the family of course.
2. Spears, spears, spears. They exist, but perhaps we can increase their power. By carving small wooden cups attached loosely to the shaft by leather and then hurled, increasing the power from which the spear is launched

The hunters keep trying to keep the gazelles in place, but they quickly come to realize why they are lauded for hunting and killing animals, not keeping them alive. Attempts to tie their legs with grasses are chewed through, all obstacles they set to keep them penned in are jumped over. They figure maybe they need some help
Hearing about the success of that clan that found the black rock, some hunters head for the mountains to look for a stone of their own suitable for weapons. Disaster strikes, as the party is set upon by a ferocious bear that tears right through them. Multiple hunters are killed, and the ones that get away to return alive are severely injured
>>53457
Artabazus' plan for the tiles is to use a new technique of his own design, to hammer bits of obsidian to keep them in place. However, the sharp stones end up damaging the tiles when he tries. After going through a good deal of tiles, he decides that perhaps this isn't the material he needed
On the other hand, the effort to record things on clay tablets gets off the ground decently. The craftsmen start making simplified versions of the pictures they carved onto their works, for convenience sake, when they use the tablet records. Even the less artistically inclined can somewhat manage these new symbols
>>53458
Your family tries to clear the hyenas from the area by hunting them and scaring them off, but there are just too many for you to handle, and some of them always run before you can get them anyway. You got some hyena skin and meat, but it seems like they will be sticking around
You also look around for a clay alternative, but you don't find anything quite malleable enough. Falling back to clay itself, your family begins making clay products of their own. They aren't the level of the Ibarrs clan, but they are perfectly serviceable as containers in their own right

Rand takes a hike with his new cane, having a much easier time of things now. His eyes peeled for new things to take advantage of, he finds several bushes growing wild strawberries. They are small and not very sweet, but his watermelons have also come a decent way in a short time, there may be hope for these as well
He returns to the river to try his hand at fishing again, this time with a new tool of his own design. The two prongs prove effective, and he is catching fish with a much greater frequency than before
>>53461
Searching yet again for more herbs, Azlatan finds this time a plant growing lavender. It smells nice, but even he thinks this one has limited use for cooking
He also goes to plant the mint he found, but he barely manages to get anything out of it. It may just be that he picked a particularly bad spot for his herb garden, with poor soil
>>53463
Work on the camel leather continues, and through some good old fashioned trial and error, a process to soften the leather is eventually created. It's now perfectly wearable by people
At the waterfall cliff, you take your time to find a way down to the lowlands. You do eventually find a path, but it is steep and rocky. The perilous trek is too much for your camels, and must be done on foot. You eventually reach the bottom. but the forest is no longer visible without the vantage point you had before. It would be quite a long journey to reach the forest without your camels like this. Though there is probably a longer way around somewhere that can accommodate them
>>53464
After embarrassingly trying to make more spears like they were novel, you try to shift gears to making wooden boards with the new sharp black rocks. Unfortunately, you end up cutting your hands a lot during the effort, unused to just how sharp these rocks are
You also try to improve the spear so it can be hurled better using a cup and leather strap design. You later find out that another clan has already made something similar, but you are able to combine the two designs into one superior one, so it isn't a total waste

1/2 Artabazus gathers the other families and informs them of a plan he concocted. If we feed the bear a great quantity of alcohol soaked dates it will get drunk, perhaps so drunk as to die, but even if not then we could strike while it has a massive hangover which as many of us know is quite debilitating. We can use sticks with black stone, spears, and throwing rocks. He will let his athletic son join the party so as to prove himself a great hunter and some of the better hunting cats.

2. Both of Azlatan's wives seemed to take a particular liking to their own herb. Pyra really likes the smell of lavender and so she has been spending time trying to find some way of extracting its scent to put on stuff like clothing when she does laundry. Bor on the otherhand really enjoys the taste of mint and has been noted to have particular good breath. Both have been working together on extracting these properties while their husband supplies them herbs.

The Ichar clan sends out men to hunt the bear. They track it down, but the fight is brutal. Three of your young men are killed and as many are wounded, though the bear does eventually fall
Back in the village, the women get to work on making new clothing. However, the work is extremely slow and difficult. Only a few sets get done, and at this rate it would be impossible to outfit the entire village
>>53468
The Montastel hastily build a hut to treat the wounded from the bear attack. It ends up being a shabby little thing, but it will have to make due
And make due it does, as many of the Montastel find that they have a gift for the healing arts. Setting limbs back in place, stanching wounds, they manage to keep nearly all of the wounded from dying from their injuries
>>53469
Your clan focuses highly on the extermination of hyenas. They don't manage to get them all, but they now often run at the very sight of you, and tend to stay away from areas around the village
Your efforts at finding another tamable animal fall flat once again, as all you're able to find this time is some mice
>>53470
The Aldaeri send their hunters to help the others take down the bear, and they fight valiantly despite the difficulty. Some of your hunters are wounded, but none are killed from your clan
Trying once again to carve wooden boards using the black rock, your craftsmen make a terrible mistake. They attempt to use the obsidian as they had handheld tools of other stone, and ended up cutting their hands up something fierce. They became unable to work while their hands healed
>>53471
Artabazus comes up with a plan to get the bear drunk with alcohol soaked dates. The plan is set up, but when the time comes, the bear ignores the bait and lashes out at the hunting party, causing widespread injury. His son is one among the wounded
>>53472
Azlatan is able to start growing the lavender much more effectively than the mint, and he starts to have a good amount of it available to him
Azlatan's wives make good use of these new herbs, with Pyra washing her clothes in a pot of water with some lavender thrown in for a pleasing scent. Bor has taken to chewing on mint leaves regularly to improve her breath, and suggests the same to many other villagers
>>53473
Before the hunt, Rand gathers the party before they set out for the bear, and blesses their journey, calling for the protection of the spirits. He stays back during the brutal fight, and gets others to help him retrieve the fallen to lay them to rest when all is done. Afterwards, many of the hunting party confide in him that they are sure they survived only thanks to the protection of the spirits

After taking down the bear, you create a totem from its pelt and bones, and set it up in the middle of the village. Everyone who sees it is reminded of the magnificent feat it was to slay it, and the people's belief that the bear's spirit was made to submit leads to a sort of collective pride in the village. From now on, villagers will often present offerings at the totem, especially during the harvest festival
The women of your clan try to get together to figure out how to best make clothing, but they just end up arguing over whose way is best and they get nothing done
>>53477
While searching for medicinal plants, you come across a bay laurel tree, and take note of the oily leaves. After some application, you have reason to believe that it can help accelerate the healing of wounds when applied
You also go back to make some more proper huts, and end up having a good amount of space to treat the wounded, assuming you don't face a much worse disaster than this
>>53478
Thinking of a way to stick the bricks together more firmly, you try creating mortar. The idea seems solid, but you can't seem to quite find an effective mix. It ends up being too sticky and clumps together, or too liquid and can't hold onto anything
Besides the artisans that were involved in its creation, the rest of the villagers don't take very well to the symbol system. They feel like it's a waste of time, and they'd rather just remember what they need
>>53479
You get back to your planting, specifically starting on those strawberries. However, some pests slip by to get into your field and eat up most of them before they can grow
>>53480
Your craftsmen crudely cover their hands with leather strips, which does protect them, but it also takes a big hit out of their dexterity. They are able to make some of the desired boards, but the going is quite slow
Another has the idea to creating a pounding tool with a handle, entirely from wood. It's simple enough to plan for, but getting an effective result seems like it will take a bit more time, since the ones they end up making now are off balance, or poorly attached at the head
>>53481
Your clan leadership is hesitant to see the obsidian transferred around so freely, and starts putting measures in place to restrict it. From now on, a guard will attend to the source of the rock on the mountain, making sure no one else accesses it. Your family is also all told clearly that no bartering is to be done for more of the stone unless the deal goes through the clan head
Searching more and more for tamable animals, you finally find a population of llamas up the mountain a ways. They are fairly docile, and seem like they could be kept without too much trouble
>>53482
You attempt to get a good crop of mint going again, and this time you succeed. You start pulling in plenty enough to get most of the village nice breath if they wanted
You also try once more to make a distilling device, and it ends up being basically one pot upside down on top of another with a hole cut in it and a wooden carved tube sticking out. It's crude, but it does manage to do what you envisioned

Eventually you are forced to let them loose in the mountains after you are sure they can fend for themselves

You keep up work on the clothing despite the difficulties, and though you have trouble coming up with any particularly efficient methods, you get better at it all the same. You're at the point where you can make a few sets to trade away on occasion
At the cliff above the lowlands, you set up a simple outpost. It's nothing impressive, just a simple hut with a place to leave your camels, but it will do the job. You can now leave someone up here to watch them while a party heads down
>>53487
You tend more to your newly planted strawberries, and manage to make them multiply explosively. You have more strawberries than you know what to do with
You disapprove of the Arsachid clan restricting the trade of the obsidian, so you make it a policy to not trade with them until they ease up. Life goes on however, as the Arsachids have plenty of fruits of their own without need for yours, and no other families join in with you so far
>>53488
With the use of your new healing leaf oils, you manage to get nearly everyone in the village into healthy physical shape. Everyone feels great, and the village has never been in higher spirits
Wary of any potential violence that could be sparked from a rivalry, your family sets out to find another herb, this one decidedly less healthy. You end up finding a purple flower, that's unpleasant to even the touch. This Wolfsbane proves to be extremely deadly when tested on animals, and humans will no doubt fare little better. You doubt incapacitating is an option for this plant, this is a plant for killing

Azlatan's son Cha goes to the Montastel to try and learn some of the healing arts, but it seems his timing is poor. When he asks, he's told that even if they wanted to, it's not possible, as they've just finished treating every single injury in the village and are now taking a long break. Maybe he will have better luck at another time

The Aldaeri get to work and do a proper job making those leather gloves. They make each of their craftsmen a personalized pair, thin but firm, and perfectly fitted. The results are fantastic, as each craftsman ends up with a very comfortable and practical set of gloves to work in
With their new gloves, they craftsmen refine their wooden tools to new levels, including that hammer design they were trying. They can now crank out the wooden mallets like nobody's business

You try to domesticate the llamas, and have at least a bit of success. They stick around and don't shy away from you, but you are yet to be able to make them do anything helpful
Using the date palm oil, your warriors make a habit of oiling up and wrestling each other for training. It's fantastic exercise, plus many other villagers consider it an impressive spectacle and come to watch

The wrestling of the Arsachid clan becomes popular so quickly, that other villagers take it up, particularly on the day of the harvest festival. While the children compete in their games, the adults compete in wrestling matches for prestige

The Montastel, being proud hawk huntsmen, that for generations have used the bird, to supplement their food and to foster a working relationship between animal and human. They now desire to settle down, and give up the nomad life.
rolls resulted in something: Gifted with healing, Bay leurel tree(accelerates healing), huts for wounded, Wolfsbane flower poison(kills).
1. Since the Monstastel now seems to have found a new calling, the house begins to change and adjust themselves to this new strange calling, By setting up a hut where they will research plants that could have either a good or bad effect on humans.
2. The young lord of the house becomes interested in the art of poison, and experiments with it a lot.

1. Using the new mallets, they refine their teepee design, hammering wooden stakes into the ground upright in a circular fashion, with long beams connecting the poles, and stretching the leather around and over the new frame. We shall call this a "Yurt".
2. With the new leather gloves comes the idea for more leather clothing. Perhaps we may make leather clothing to cover our chests, or a longer, more uniform loincloth that is both stylish and utilitarian

1; Continue domestication of the llamas, they will be incredibly useful if we can domesticate them. Maybe… if we focus on their babies…
2; We should find a more thicker kind of tree. It occurred to us that we could use the tree trunks to surround our village and keep it totally safe from predators, and even enemies. First, we should find a stable supply of them to log

The Montastel build yet another hut, but this one for research. It becomes a sort of medical base of operations, where they study the effects of all manner of plants on the body. With this, any such study should go smoothly
The heir to the Montastel messes with the dangerous wolfsbane much more than one would usually find comfortable. While he hasn't poisoned anyone with it, he's tried out many ways to apply it to animals. Sneaking it in some food as bait, and putting it on the end of a spear and stabbing away both seem to work quite effectively, and should be just as applicable to humans
>>53496
The Aldaeri improve their wooden frame from earlier, fit over a proper leather covering instead of the rough hide, and create the yurt. This dwelling proves to be extremely comfortable, as it can breathe better than the mud brick housing
Building on the leather craft, they also start to make leather front body coverings, resembling an apron. They aren't the masterwork that the gloves were, but they prove to be quite functional
>>53497
Your family builds a large mud brick wall around some of the village's houses, and covers the whole thing with a huge camel hair tent. For as seriously resource intensive as it is, you only manage to get about three houses covered, but they are protected from the shade for most of the day
You instruct your family not to trade with the Arsachids, following Rand's lead. However the trader blood can't be swayed in all of them, as a few continue to stealthily make deals they aren't supposed to
>>53510
You keep trying at the mortar mix, and adding some sand from the riverbed to the mix you had provides some great results. The bricks stick together firmly, taking much more than an errant jostle to set free. The mortar also proves to be fairly waterproof
You try your hand at making some traps for the fish in the river. You set up some pots with bait and pointed sticks. It's crude, but it manages to pill in a few fish. It would take quite some refining, but there is potential
>>53513
You hobble on down the river to the southern village to meet with their shaman. You are decently known from the visits of the villagers, so you are welcomed warmly. You talk on the spirits with your counterpart, and come out in contention. The village here also burns the dead, but they then set their ashes upon the wind to free them for all time. They know of your custom to make guardian statues, but they do not approve. Perhaps it is because they only just moved out of their nomad ways, but they think the spirit should be free to go wherever it pleases above all else. Your attempts to get them to reconsider are rebuffed, and though voices are never raised, you are sternly told that they will not change their ways before being sent home
>>53518
You continue domesticating the llamas, now focusing mainly on rearing the young ones. They grow up in proximity to humans, and thus seem to be most comfortable with them. Only time will tell, but they could also prove to follow orders in time
You search for a good, thick type of tree to plant around the village. You end up finding a good candidate, a type of cypress called ahuehuete which grows very stout. However, successfully planting enough of them in the manner desired is another matter altogether

Taking his prototype to Artabazus, Azlatan tries one more time to describe what he would like. With the visual aid, the message finally goes through, and Azlatan gets his proper distilling device

Tensions are a bit higher this year at the festival due to the southern village guests, though it's made clear from most of them that despite the differences, they want to stay friendly. Working out the tension via competitive wrestling seems to ease the mood a bit, and it doesn't ever get violent, so some still hope that relations can be restored back to how good they were the first time they came for the festival

1. Perhaps there is more to be done with wood and animal products. The children make a game of bending young, supple wood and slapping each other with it, but perhaps said strength in the material could be used to launch objects. Perhaps be bending a thing piece of straight wood, then holding it so with long tendons, we could fashion a new weapon with which to launch projectiles.
2. Furthermore, perhaps our hunters may have use of a lighter wood to protect themselves from animals such as bears and wolves. Strong small pieces of wood strung together with leather. It would lie upon the arms, or maybe the chest and legs. We'll call it Arm-or

1 The Ibars, rather than building a wall with one width of bricks, will try a wall with two widths of bricks making the wall twice as thick, with every six bricks we will include a 'patriarch brick' which is twice as wide as regular bricks and is able to be part of both widths. This should make the wall much stronger and more stable.

I believe that even such a complex task as home renovation can be done quickly and easily if you find different stores in advance, choose building materials and find specialists and workers. For buying bricks, I advise you to visit this store https://brickwholesale.co.uk/bricks/wienerberger-bricks/ which has a really good selection of building materials at affordable prices.
