There's a little known Asynja of Norway, known as "Kari", as attested by the Orkneyinga Saga. Her form is what grew into "Kari Nordmann" as represented by allegorical portrayals of Norway in political cartoons. During the nationalist movements of the late 1800s and early 1900s many sayings were collected as a kind of honor for her, from rural folk.

Also in these political cartoons you usually get "Ola og Kari Nordmann" as a couple but in the United States, in places with lots of Scandinavian Descendants, there are lots of jokes about a couple known as "Ole and Lena". Now "Lena" is a very strange change, since that is an ancient name the Saxon's used for "Frigg" in "Lina", so if "Lena" is "Frigga", I wonder who Ola/Ole might be an example of?

http://oaks.nvg.org/ole-lena.html

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ole_and_Lena

The living American tradition is a very intriguing one:

>>"LENA PASSED away and Ole called 911. The 911 operator told Ole that she would send someone out right away. "Where do you live?" asked the operator. Ole answered, "At the end of Eucalyptus Drive." "Can you spell that for me?" the operator asked. There was a long pause and finally Ole said, "How about if I drag her over to Oak Street and you pick her up there?""

>>"OLE ON getting old: "You know you're getting old when you can't remember why - and also when you know all the answers, but nobody asks you the questions.""

>>"OLE AND Lena got married. On their honeymoon trip they were nearing Minneapolis when Ole put his hand on Lena's knee. Giggling, Lena said, "Ole, you can go a little further now if you want to -" . . . so Ole drove to Duluth.""

Kári is a he. He's a weight or ettin associated with cold wind, his brothers are Ægir and Logi.

Your first pic is Fjallkonan Frón - Iceland's Lady of the Mountains.

>>Kári is a he

As far as I know only by Orkneyinga saga, which was heavily redacted and "secularized" by Christians to be used in the story of "Saint Magnus". Kari Nordmann, is definitely portrayed as wife to Ola and as a woman, though yeah in Iceland Kåre (sounds more like Corey) is a male name deriving from that saga but yeah you are right that is Iceland's "Lady of the Mountains".

>>19108

This is "Kari Nordmann".

And as well Ole and Lena. The striking ethnic change is almost like a proto-amerimutt meme.

I came across voodoo candle magic done by some British guy on YouTube, who uses a spoken prayer over his items, and I incorporated the candle and ingredient aspects of it with sigils and galdr. I've done this three times now using different variations. My latest attempt was for wealth/money (implying money is real) and I won two things this year, although small things. But I've been led to finance videos and really understanding so much about the world of stock trading as well, so perhaps the gods have been communicating with me to get my life on the right track I need for material survival.

A genuine communication is better than chanting/singing in my opinion but I will continue to experiment with both still. Alter places though seem to also work out better even if it is basically nothing. It seems to act like a focal point or invitation for the spirits, basically a sign or telephone to help beacon them. It's like spoken word is more confirming of communication than mental prayer. Perhaps this involves action more than passive? Or the whole breathe thing is true?

Well, how has /asatru/ been this year with communicating with the gods and other spirits?

Do you use more of an established tradition or are you more experimental?

I made a necklace using a wolf tooth, along with some other wolf creations using fur and bone. The idea was to harness the wolves through these items and then seal them around as my personal pack. But I don't think it worked, not well enough anyways. My whole approach to this must be wrong, totally not like connecting with other gods and spirits. Then I only have a small piece of the wolf with no personal interaction with the wolves as they lived, further separating me from them geographically. I wanted them as like familiars, but even part of their essence as power would be fine too. It's actually a complex spell process to obtain the swiftness, stealth, and strength of a pack of wolves, invisible and invincible as much as possible.

So I have to completely rework these items again to recharge them, but even if it did work, I should still be enchanting them over and over just to increase the potency.

I don't like using the term prayer, as begging wasn't considered a good gesture (rude and shameful if anyting). >>19107 is a fine video, it gives a good summary on what people did in the past, with good descriptions of said acts. But personally I find it lacking a crucial thing, as it only looking at the act without reason behind the act. To sacrifice (blóta) is not just to exchange gifts (the act), it is to express that you are opening yourself to the god as a loyal friend. That is essentially the essance of pagan faith (trú), trust and loyalty. You are offering something that is off your self to the god which is to symbolise your trust, and if the god trusts you back, then it will also offer something off itself.

This sort of relationship is antithetical to prayer (biðja), asking without giving. Not only is that rude, but it also gives off the idea that you intend to rely on the subject you invoke, to submit to them and be indebted to them.

I know this might all seem like semantics, but it is important as the mindset you have whilst invoking the Gods is crucial. Don't go in asking for favors, and then look at the activity as a exchange in goods and services. Look at it as a expression of loyalty, as symbolism for opening eachother to one another, and you are expressing it through the act of giving.

Just to make a correction, in Icelandic we don't have "Kåre" (å doesn't exist in our language), but we have Kári (pronounced "Kauri") and he is a wind giant, son of Fornjótr. There's a saying here that if the winds are strong then Kári is angry.

It depends on the god in question. Alcoholic beverages and food items were likely used traditionally, though more simplistically, money also works.
