Who else played the old Middle Earth Roleplaying Game? Probably my favorite system as it isn't like stupid D&D with hit, lose 20 HP, heal, gain 15 HP. ICE did a pretty good job on the world too. Great maps and good sourcebooks. Adventures were decent. I always liked that they kept everything low fantasy as magic in Middle Earth is super rare.

Never used any of the specifically designed systems, but in my experience I haven't found Middle-earth to work well for roleplaying. There's massive holes pretty much everywhere requiring large doses of OC, but on the other hand the settings tone is strictly defined and fanfiction intrisically required for ttrpgs quickly becomes jarring, especially with players of different levels of familiarity with Tolkien's work. It's easier to use an original setting designed for the kind of game I want from the get-go and just steal the parts I want from Tolkien.

It's actually very fun to play. We always stayed away from certain things tho. Like the war of the ring, elves, dwarves and classic fireball magic. We only played as humans or hobbits. You also need a harsh game system like Rolemaster etc. with injuries to make combat hard and punishing. LotR is not suitable for hack n slay. Also travelling was always a big part of the adventures. There are so many source books and adventures that you really don't need to come up with everything.

You can find it in it's entirety on the trove. I remember there was also a website that had some fan made content as well but alas I have forgotten it's name and cannot find it.
