We ('western' civilization) already waste an absolutely massive amount of resources keeping parts of Africa above its carrying capacity. We're already at the explosive population growth phase, so long as we keep feeding people who can't/won't produce for themselves, either by geographical limitations or otherwise.
China, despite its large population at the moment, is actually looking at massive population losses over the next forty to sixty years due to their preference towards keeping male children for so long. Africa, on the other hand, is set to become the new China, population-wise, within the next *twenty* years, due to lack of birth control, uncontrolled population growth, and being given more resources than their land would provide or their people produce.
This, in turn, will lead to one of three things, or some combination of them: famine, plague, or economic recession/depression, due to food shortages in producing countries, lack of quality medication in the 'kept' countries in question, and the increasing cost of keeping an overburdened population alive.
The best example I can give is what happens when you feed deer. If you allow the population to grow above its carrying capacity, plague spreads or they eat all of the food and become dependent on humans for food, and many die off either way. This is why you don't feed anything that should care for itself.

The problem with what defines "Socialism" is it has a somewhat complicated history of meaning different things, thus being redefined by different people who would come up with their own special snowflake rationale to explain "what's wrong with the world?" and why/how "Socialism" would end it. I would honestly be very surprised if nobody ever tried to use genetic engineering to keep their designer son looking like a 10 year old forever.
