Surprised that I couldn't find one in the catalog, but I'll start one off I guess.

What post-apocalyptic and/or Cyberpunk anime would you recommend? Assume I haven't seen any. Bonus points if its older. I've heard good things about Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Jin Roh and more recently Viper's Creed and Ergo Proxy.

I value story and loveable characters a lot, though if the animation and combat of an anime is god-tier I wouldn't be against seeing it regardless of its storytelling quality (though I'd hope it would at least get the atmosphere and ambiance of a post-apocalyptic/Cyberpunk world right at least in that)

Not the anon you're replying to, but I really liked Tales from Earthsea.

That being said, it took a steaming pile of dogshit all over the source material. Mix-and-matching characters and plot-points from the Earthsea quadrilogy without elaborating or explaining anything for the most part, such as why Tehanu was the bitch's truename or why she was a dragon, the origin of Ged, or anything.

So donno. I liked it for what it was, but it has no business using the name 'Earthsea' since it bears almost no resemblance to the books.

Plus the OST is amazing.

What is there to like? Until the elderly trap in Sen's Fortress and his three or four guards start getting pissy the movie is just a brat who killed his dad for no reason and a wizard who drags him along for no reason mucking about in Hort Town and the wizard's ex's farm for no reason. Even with the books for context (of which the movie gives almost none) the dialogue, editing, pacing, and mixing are still terrible. There's also a halfhearted attempt at presenting themes but Goro keeps forgetting them to fellate The Journey of Shuna and channel his dad issues until the ending.

It wasn't an 'adaptation' from the books, really. It would be like if Goro made a LotR anime, and it featured Frodo and Sam journeying to Lake-Town to defeat some Uruk-Hai who were enslaving the townsfolk only to discover Saruman was secretly brewing a potion to brainwash hobbits into some shit and blah blah. Technically sharing characters and the setting, and slight plot elements, but it doesn't adapt them and instead just mixes-and-matches them to create its' own story instead.

That being said

>What's there to like?

It was entertaining to me, eat shit.

Gantz gets apocalypshit by the end. It's a very uneven series, which twisted into something unrecognizable from its origins a couple of times. Every arc had its merits, from the strict rules of the game in the first part, to the audacity of the mass murders in the finale.

>Jin-Roh

Pretty nicely animated, I also liked how it doesn't look like most anime out there, striving for a more realistic feel. As for the plot, it's a typical Oshii story, with all that entails (interdepartmental rivalries, shadow wars, political intrigue, etc.).

>Ghost in the Shell

Again, pretty good if you're into cyberpunk. The original movie is still the best thing in the franchise in my opinion. The second movie tends to be 2deep4u bullshit. SAC is good, though both seasons take a while to get into gear. Arise is something of a prequel to either the movies or SAC, but can be seen as a completely separate entity. I found the writing to be much weaker than in the previous two.

>Ergo Proxy

Really galical pace and too much navel gazing for its own good. I did watch it to the end but can't say it left much of an impression.

As for recommendations

>Psycho-Pass

But only the first season. Season 2 goes full retard and the movie features Japanese VAs trying to speak English when it's obvious they don't know a word of English, with predictable results.

As for the premise of the show, people in Japan are living in Huxley's tumblr hugbox and things are as horrifyingly fucked up as one can imagine. Features a police force made up of people that really shouldn't be cops that use anti-matter guns to "peacefully" apprehend crazy people and those accused of thought-crime.

>Darker than Black

Again, first season only. Chinese Electric Batman and his sidekicks (fatso, talking cat and loli) go around murdering people for fun and profit. Jokes aside, it's a story about "contractors", which are basically people with superpowers given to them by a mysterious, unmentioned entity that need to preform remuneration each time they use their powers (which can be anything, from eating pages from a book to breaking your fingers).

>>84775

Nah, Thunderbolt is actually okay, if only because all the cast are adults and tend to behave like adults. Also, it takes the brutality of the OYW to what it should actually be like, with both Zeon and the Feddies mercilessly slaughtering each other. I'd argue it nudges it into edgelord territory, but for the most part it doesn't go overboard.

Also, unlike that autistic fuckwit Tomino the writers here know the value of subtlety. The backstory of the Feddie chad is told in under 20 seconds through a bunch of stills that manage to inform the audience about who he is, where he is from, what happened to make him what he is today and tells you what motivates him to fight. Same for the Zeon cripple. Everything else about the writing is like that too. Little time is wasted on drowning the audience in boring exposition, there's little space autism to go around and you can tell the creators really love a good mecha fight.

Additionally, we're still in the period of UC where not everything is fucking mobile suits, so you do see some other vehicles.

It`s not only good, Desert Punk is in its own class. The plot is very good for a cliche seeting and as it develops it goes to crazy directions, the world building is top notch however, stuff like the equipment design and attention to details on real life guns sells the series. The author really improve his art as he goes, his inking is something unique, the kind of technique you don`t see it anymore. Light and dark contrast is a character on this manga, it almost feel like the pages have texture.

The anime did not make justice to the source material, everything was too clean and bland. On the manga everything is simplified, dirty and ugly, really contributes to the immersion and from time to time you get these really expressive panels that work so well in contrast, the author knew how to convey emotions with images only, something it`s GONE in manga these days with the potato shit.

Yea, its a shame how alot of mangas that started out decades ago, change their artwork over time to "adapt" to what the current style is. I remember reading Hajime no ippo looking at the art being much better when it started out, then reading the later chapters thinking; why do they change the style when it doesnt look any better?

The first Patlabor movie was absolutely great. More detective work than mechas, even.

Also watched Maquia, big tearjerker from last year. Immortal loli nurtures a baby, tries to be a good mother to the end when he's an old man. Maternal instincs on overdrive.

Blue Bird is another recent film, alternating drama among schoolgirls busy with their music class, and the fantasy story told in their music opera. Kinda boring and aimless, but well directed, and nice design in the fairy tale inserts.

I really enjoyed Darker than Black and Gaiden. Hei is pretty fucking cool as a character, especially when he's acting as some lovey dovey aloof guy. Episode 26 was a bit too comedic for my taste especially after the rollercoasters of the previous few episode, but it was still pretty well done.

I watched the second season purely for Hei. I like his drunk hobo phase a lot, but otherwise pretty shit/10.

Anything similar to Darker than Black?

>Psycho Pass - the movie features Japanese VAs trying to speak English when it's obvious they don't know a word of English, with predictable results.

There's a fanmade dub that has the canonically "english" characters have their western dub, while the jap characters have their japanese voices complete with the engrish and I felt it was a really good edit.

The key is to branch out from anime you already know about.

Go to myanimelist or something and look for the anime you like. Then go to the recommended section to find anime similar to it, or browse one of the tags/categories that the anime is in. If you like the story then look for anime from the same writer, if you like the animation then look for anime from the same studio.

I mean yeah I saw the guy berating you but you're an open book so it's not really your fault. You're so new to anime any classic will blow you away. It really depends on what you like and what you've listed is so disparate that it's hard to peg down what you like. I mean I can recommend Lodoss War but I don't know if you like high fantasy. I can recommend Koe no Katachi because you liked Your Name but that's not a 1:1 enjoyment factor. There's so many anime I could recommend but I don't know what you like and how open you are to new things you haven't encountered before. What other forms of entertainment do you like? Do you like books and if so what kinds? Do you already read manga and what manga do you gravitate towards? What western media do you consume? All that will help us to help you find what you like. One last thing: thank you for not making a new thread and asking in an appropriate thread for your interests. You may be ignorant of the subject but you're not stupid.

into books and movies. books basicaly anything i enjoy reading, perhaps thriller and horror are the most watched ones. movies is extreamely broad everything apart of teenage drama

manga.... all from reccomandation ive open site page but yet to start reading: mushumeshi, i am hero, beastar, great teacher onizukawhich if im not wrong there is also an anime battle angle alita, valkyria chronical this actually is from the /v/ reccomandation boku dake ga inai machi, monster musume, hero accademia, youjo senki, goblin slayer, arasa quest, kumo desu ga, fat elf, terraformars, death notethis last from a normalfag friend as you can see its really open to all type

>thank you for not making a new thread and asking in an appropriate thread for your interests. You may be ignorant of the subject but you're not stupid.

For more thriller, suspense, and horror I'd recommend Mushishi which is about a traveling apothecary that solves mysteries related to Mushi which are like I guess the best way to describe them are demon bateria, Monster which is long and a little slow paced but well worth it to watch about a doctor who's framed for murder and he has to go and catch the real killer while being on the run from the inspector trying to catch him, and Mononoke Which is about the occult in feudal Japan with a very unique art style and direction. That's should get you started off for a little while. Also here's a chart that will have more anime like what you are interested in and they're all pretty good.

I hVe been desperately looking for a redpilled or conservative anime/movie for months now. The major streaming platforms refuse to show anything of the sort.

I love anime but often just from the cover thumbnail I know its gonna be gay as hell. I don't want a harem, I want another Champloo or Bebop or GiTS or Gantz O. But instead all I get is high school petty drama over the backdrop of world ending drama.

I liked steins gate a bit. Fate stay night is somehow more gay than steins gate. I've seen akira and honestly I think that movie is gorgeous but overrated. its too long for its own good and it doesn't do enough storywise with what it has.

I tried watching Re;Creators. I could not stand it. It seems like a very poorly thought out "what if my generic anime girls were real" story. Everyone just fucking believes whatever magic book girl says despite her stating her explanations are basically just guesses and despite the fact that there's dozens of possible theories. And this just keeps happening up until and though the conference with the government officials. When she explains the possibility of the fabric of reality tearing apart, on the gov't officials says "we should call an expert". What kind of fucking retardation is that? What expert is there that can say anything of value not already said about the purely unproven and hypothetical situation of different universes colliding causing the fabric of reality to tear apart? I had to stop watching it here.

Anything somewhat actiony anyone might recommend watching to detox from that utter retardation?

>or Gantz O

But Gantz O was shit. The story was shit, the story it was based on was shit, and it took that bad story and made it worse in addition to cutting out a lot of the fun bits. The only thing good about Gantz O is that it very was pretty, in which case you might as watch any other tripe with high production values. I admit I liked it despite this and I like Gantz just for having fun scenarios, but don't compare that shit to Champloo, Bebop, or GitS.
