I don't think the trend towards more detailed and rules-based systems is unique to Japan though. In western fantasy novels Wheel of Time kind of set the standard for contemporary fantasy series in the 90s with hard magic systems and a lot of big series have followed suit- the biggest probably being everything Cosmere and Malazan.
Maybe it's more of a casual v non-casual thing than eastern v western audiences.
