More like the other way around. Western McMansions are cheaper knockoffs based on Japanese prefab housing. In Japan, houses and buildings depreciate in value over time (unless they're rare cultural landmarks) because they've been weakened by Japan's frequent earthquakes. No one wants to buy a "used" house that has a greater risk of collapsing. So the Japanese housing industry developed loads of techniques and methods for quick but sturdy prefab housing. Eventually some canny Western real estate developers realized they could make shit-tons of money in their own home countries by churning out loads of cheap McMansions using similar construction methods, except with highly increased profit margins by removing the earthquake-proofing required by Japanese law.
