I was just thinking about it, but why the hell would any mecha need a head? Generally speaking, in the human body, the head contains speech/taste/smell, sight, hearing and the brain. If you are making a robot, the equivalent of those things would be far better placed in either the center of mass or spread all over the body.

The head piece in Gundam can have turrets (vulcans) and is another camera. It can fight without it. What I find silly though is later shows they sometimes treat a headshot like it's a kill. Also I don't know why most space oriented mobile suits have legs. The Zeong did great without them. As for the Big Zam, they were used to kick away mobile suits that got under it as that was the only place the shields couldn't protect.
