There is some plot progression, including the introduction of a couple new supporting characters, but not that much. Between episodes 600-800, there's maybe 20 episodes of major plot, and another 30 which have minor (but still somewhat relevant) plot advancement, like Takagi's relationship and such. At the point I'm at right now, Conan is trying to figure out who the leader of the Black Organization is, based on some descriptions given by others. I'd say it would require maybe 30-40 solid, major plot episodes to actually wrap up the main story, so not for awhile atleast.

Black Clover really came outta nowhere for me. I figured it was just going to be another generic shonenshit, but to my shock it was...another generic shonenshit.
I mean that in a good way, though. It's incredibly generic and does a lot of shit that you've seen before, but it's so damn entertaining I couldn't care less. It helps that it really doesn't take itself all that seriously, and the central cast doesn't have anyone I don't like (Yuno is a bit of a snoozefest most of the time but even he has his moments). There's some enjoyably corny dialogue (especially MY MAGIC IS NEVER GIVING UP), it's hilarious how often the power of friendship wins the day, and (so far) there hasn't been a lot of power creep to make things awful. Takes a few episodes to get going but now it's something I look forward to every week.

My favorite thing is how a lot of the fights focus on interesting and logically consistent combinations moreso than most battle shounens (water temple and tournament arc being the best examples). Asta's magic is at least explained fairly well.
But it's too bad the anime started off so poorly.

Yeah, the start of the anime was pretty rough, although I'll give them credit, I did not expect to be more or less forced to like Asta because everyone else was acting like complete dickheads to him and it didn't seem like he deserved it at all. So even though he was screaming all the time, he was the only likable character in those first couple episodes, so I was willing to stick it out. Glad I did.
There's also some good subversions that I've enjoyed so far. For one, I like that Asta and Yuno's rivalry is just that, and Yuno isn't this ow the edge type that gets on my nerves. Even if they shittalk each other, they're still happy whenever their paths cross. Or like Noelle is actually a competent character (cough cough sakura). And speaking of the Water Temple arc, what could have been a long and dragged-out tourney arc was instead cut short only a couple episodes in because the bad guys blew a hole in the wall and started wrecking shit. I was also legitimately floored when it turned out Gray was a cute gril instead of a giant stoner.
It just floors me how the series went from "eh, it might be okay" to "well I could probably enjoy it ironically" to "holy shit I fucking love Black Clover now" for me. Sure didn't expect that.

That was really well executed, including how it was alluded to when Yami was wondering about it. And the animation in the second half of the episode for the fight was real nice. For a show that doesn't seem super popular (or at least gets shat on a lot on the internet) they really put quality episodes together for the big fights.
