Let this be a ward against hubris: No lesson is so basic that it shouldn't be reviewed when you're in trouble.
I don't know if my japanese got much better in today's post, but after reviewing some basic concepts (and I mean real basic shit, like transitivity, sentence order and even noun phrases) something clicked and today's pages definitely felt easier than the previous days.

1st pic is (((mental gymnastics))) of modern academics posing as teleonomy. A reduction in complexity, which is usually observed in (((parasites))), indicates over specialization and it's more often than not an evolutionary dead end. A bacterio that loses its plasmids might have "evolved" but for all practical purposes has simply regressed towards its ancestors original evolutionary state. Modern evolutionary biologists have just bent over to (((egalitarian))) rhetoric and have established time as evolution's only metric since it's the only way they can somehow excuse the absurd claim that all contemporary organisms are "equally evolved".

I had a similar thing happen to me while learning Japanese grammar. It's like I was looking at a mess of letters, something clicked, and then it was all words. Maybe that's just what learning language is like.

>There has never been anything like Shindara's* wing's skeletal structure in all history.
<There has never been anything like Shindara's* wing skeleton in all history.

While Pterosaur is correct, I'm assuming Mikado is referring to the same flying dinosaur he mentioned while chasing Shindara.

17-21 panel 5
>The evolution of living species is a system that occurs in every possible way and direction. But it's an irreversible process.
<"Evolution" is when a living species systematically changes in any particular way. It's an irreversible process.
>A degeneration would be loss of function or form of a single part or organ.
<"Degeneration" is the loss of form or function of a single part or organ.
>{Bottom of the page} Evolutions doesn't necessarily means improvement or progress. The criteria for "improvement" will presuppose a system of values, but science doesn't concern itself with such values. Going from a complex system to a more simple one is still considered evolution. These changes are mainly just grammar nitpicks.
<{Bottom of the page} Evolution doesn't necessarily mean improvement or progress. "Improvement" presupposes a system of values, but science doesn't concern itself with such values. Going from a complex system to a simpler one can still be called "evolution". Therefore, "degeneration" is considered one type of pattern within "evolution".

>The D-Virus takes control of over 90% of the human genome. What we've known so far to be considered unusable "junk DNA" is having it's useful parts selected to build a unique mechanism of it's own.

All three of these bubbles feel like a set-up to make panel 3 more impactful, so I took out any attempt to make a coherent sentence out of it.

Talking about Kansai into some kind of English dialect? Not that I've seen. The most common one is making characters sound like an amalgamation of rednecks from all over the country which is definitely not accurate. Japanese dialects are completely different from English dialects. There's some Japanese dialects that cannot communicate with other dialects without resorting to Standard (Tokyoben) Japanese. It's not like a British accent compared to an American one or a New Englander versus a Texan. Because of how Japanese works the language while similar is different. It's more like comparing two different Slavic languages than different parts of America like most translators do. Which is why you can't just slap some goofy accent on a character and be like "Haha! Kansaiben! Nailed it!" It's really lazy and it's better to just translate as generic English unless there is a specific plot point to make which in that case a translation note would be a better route than slaughtering your own script. Another thing is doing an accent in the translated language can sometimes be really badly done. Some Seven Seas translator that's lived in San Francisco his whole life is not going to understand the complexities of a Southern accent enough to do the other end of the translation justice. So it's bad on multiple levels.

I guess I'm just lost as to what the actual difference is between say Tokyoben and Kansai in the first place. Just doing a wiki-walk I'm getting
>Differences in vowel and consonant sounds
>some words have been shortened from their original form (Yoku became Yo)
>some commonly used verbs in speech
stuff like that.
So as a guy who only knows one language, and can't even parse whatever the Slavs or japs are speaking, I'm curious as to why Kansai dialect is associated with southern american accents. To your point there was a scene in Silver Spoon where Mikage speaks with a country accent and it's to highlight that when she's more relaxed she reverts to her normal speech and is using I guess Tokyoben when on the school grounds. So that's a moment where it's a specific plot point to highlight a difference in speech.

>I'm curious as to why Kansai dialect is associated with southern american accents
It's pretty arbitrary. Kansai is considered a comedic accent which with Kansai boke in the two man stand up comedy routines Tsukkomi and Boke (which is similar to old Abbot and Costello routines from the early 20th century) makes the dialect have a slight reputation for stupidity. More emphasis on a comedic reputation than a dumb reputation but they go together in Japanese as they put a lot of value on intelligence in their culture. Most comic relief characters from Japanese fiction are going to have a Kansai accent. Southern accents get a bad wrap for lack of intelligence as well going back to stereotypes developed in WWII era war movies of the Southern soldier being arbitrarily the dumb one. That's the origin of both of the stereotypes most people don't know about. Connect the two together and you get shit translations. In Silver Spoon that would be an appropriate case of using a rural accent accent because it is a plot point that is important to point out. Although it's usually a go to for a Southern accent and they could have used a Maine accent or Wyoming accent or any other rural part of the country but the Southern accent is the go to because of stereotypes in American culture.

Changed to match the rest of the panel.
<And so...
>They evolved to gain superhuman abilities.
"The location of (の行方は) the evolved superhumans (その進化した超人達)"
This part is somewhat confusing since 行方 can mean the literal "where are they going" as well as the metaphorical "what is the goal they're headed towards". I went with the literal because Mikado's still worried about Maya and Kawabata shifts to talking about how the Hijikata Group is searching for the Zombists.

Dokkaku soldier ー Shötora (Japanese) ー Catura
TN: since these always come with both their names in kanji followed by the romanized version, I'm including the japanese pronunciation in place of the kanji.
{Right side of the picture} Catura and the bipedal creatures.
{Speech bubble}
>Both apes and humans have hair that grows facing up from their wrists
>And hair that grows facing down from their shoulders, their direction changing at the elbow.

{Upper half text}
In the original work, they were called "Bestial soldiers". The reason it was changed to "Dokkaku soldiers" in the manga was because I started wondering why the researchers would call them "Bestial soldiers" if their goal wasn't exactly to create a fusion between humans and beasts.
The excuse given to the public was that there were concerns about other works that had used the name "Bestial soldiers" before. Or something of the sort. To be quite frank, that wasn't a request from the editorial side when serialization started.
The first one to appear from the original work was Catura, and I was thinking on how I was going to go about him. He shouldn't be hairless, so I wanted an image that evoked a doberman, covered in short hair. I think it would have been nice if I could have expressed that point more easily.
Also, drawing a four legged figure doing battle was a lot more limiting than I thought it would be, and dull and boring as well. But I eventually came up with a solution for this situation.
My task was to draw a human who had adapted into walking on four legs. But why have humans become bipedal in the first place? That question came to torment me. After all, it sacrifices a great deal of mobility, can cause gastroptosis, it's harder on our circulatory system, demands more work from our hearts, it's harder for blood to reach the brain, it causes lower back pain, makes childbirth more difficult, among other drawbacks. Other mammals are unlikely to be afflicted by these risks. Among over five thousand different mammal species, humans are the only ones to develop such a reckless alternative.
Compared to birds, which are related to some dinosaur species, we can observe that the latter were bipedal to begin with. Conversely, for the sauropods, thyreophora and others alike, having evolved to move on four legs appears to be a faulty adaptation.
In conclusion, humans are amateurs when it comes to being bipeds, while dinosaurs are pros. It's even possible their forelimbs could have evolved into hands. Furthermore, they existed for about 160 million years, but in spite of that, we're supposed to believe they never developed any kind of civilization.
Instead, only one kind of mammal stood up, defying all adversities. And in merely five million years, we managed to develop civilization. And what does civilization means, you may ask? That question remains eternal.

Afterwords appear to be the place where authors just write about whatever they feel like. You even see it in doujinshi; often they write about what games they're playing or if they had bad colds or whatever. Getting a glimpse of what the author went through as he wrote and drew his work is (in my opinion, anyway) surprisingly fun to read, like an honest version of those "Making Of" videos.
Either way, thanks for going through the trouble.

In the light novel they're more like monsters. It's difficult to draw creatures whose skeletons, muscle structure and internal organ placement did not come up from evolution in a natural habitat. Or to be more precise, they disregard any kind of biological theory. I'm not good with this amount of designing freedom that fantasy has.
On the other hand, even the anatomy of real creatures sometimes easily surpasses human imagination, their designs seeming to be downright impossible. I'm making efforts to stay within these general sensibilities. This is a manga after all.
When it came to Sindura, I wanted to provide a level of reality to the absurd idea of a flying man. That meant I had very limited options at my disposal, but then Watanabe-shi, suggested "what if he was hairless and really skinny?". And then I kind of went with it, but I still wasn't sure if it was a good or bad choice.
No matter how you look at it, he has the weakest survival abilities of all Dokkaku soldiers. Starting with his wings, their membrane is very thin and fragile.
Or maybe... that's not entirely true. After all, among mammals, aren't the chiroptera flourishing when compared to rodents? Let's take the pteradon for example. Even the average cessna plane had to be made huge. So the wing structure of pteradons couldn't have been all that flimsy, right?
On the other hand, with such a large surface area his heat dispersion is also probably very high. And with a body that large, he can't wear clothes. Being hairless must have been tough. Maybe if blood didn't circulate through his wing membranes then he wouldn't lose so much body heat. Also, in order to keep himself lightweight, he has little subcutaneous fat. Which also means he must have poor stamina. Flying is probably a considerably strenuous task. You should quit smoking, Sindura...
I've raised enough concerns about this and that and some more already. The truth is, before I could notice, he had become the most precious Dokkaku soldier for me.

Yup, I just looked it up on wikipedia and came back to post this. At least in the wiki article the term "Dokkaku" was already being used, but for the virus (maybe it was a fungus in the original work? I mostly used google translate) and the warriors were indeed 獣化兵 (beast soldiers). I didn't read any more into it, don't want to spoil anything. These are the books mentioned, in the order they were mentioned.
Omake Vol 2, pg2
{Title, right} Old man's mysterious origins.
{Text}
In the original work, Yakushimaru Houzan is a character who controls a remarkable power in the form of human resources. A power that goes beyond simple strength. His role in the story is also of utmost importance. Much like a black hole's gravity, the effect of his actions are felt throughout the entire world. On top of that, he isn't worried at all about the value of his work decreasing.
All the characters have important parts to play in this. And once you understand the whole process, you'll notice how everything falls in place. It's certainly a beautiful story. But this is a character whose actions threaten to disturb the ballance of the entire story. That's just how his life is. And that's what makes it all so interesting. And if it's interesting, then it's bound to be a success.
In the original work, Houzan is quite an accomplished character. We pulled that back a bit on the manga. This way, the roles are better distributed and not so concentrated, and other characters can shine a bit as well.
By the way, this manga version of Houzan is heavily based on Musashi Miyamoto. A historical figure that has been alluded in my other works so far, either directly or indirectly. But since that's a character who doesn't have a universally recognizeable image, I thought I should provide a little bit of exposition about him.
Musashi has had popular depictions before. Starting from the works of Yoshikawa Eiji-shi, in which Musashi is described as someone seeking to find his own way in life. His image has developed since then. "Duelist", by Shibata Renzaburo-shi (TN: this seems to be a contracted title, the full title for this book translates to "The Duelist Musashi Miyamoto", 決闘者宮本武蔵, I couldn't find an official english title to use) portrays a more machiavellian Musashi. And if you want to dive even further, there's "Two Musashis" by Gomi Kosuke-shi (TN: another loose translation, no english title) introducing a multifaceted Musashi. He is generally portrayed in these kinds of patterns. Or perhaps we should just call him a complex character.
And as a result... Well you can call it superiority complex (TN: adapted because I believe the literal saying doesn't make sense in english), or maybe it's just stubborn pride. But my image that came to be didn't exactly follow novel nor drama. After all, and most important, this is a manga.
Frankly, some of those things feel out of place to me. I can't possibly imagine Musashi being the kind that says things like "I want to be strong". That would be the kind of thing you would get if you read a preface in an Olympic book (TN: maybe "sports magazine"? Im not sure if this is meant to be a specific book about the Olympics or just a general comment on sports journalism) and interpreted it straight and literally.
There's a quote attributed to him, "I haven't had a single defeat in over 60 victories". Seems to me he has been the strongest around since the beginning. And there's even more to it! That's from when he wasn't even thirty years old! At that point he realized something, he didn't know why he was so strong. That's when he started his pursuit to research the art of battle. Because he wanted to understand his own strength, he put together a system for his technique. That was his real challenge. In the end, he was in a different league altogether when compared to any ordinary person.

This afterward was much denser. I couldn't find official translation names for the last two novels either.
{Text}
>On top of that, he isn't worried at all about the value of his work decreasing.
The topic diverges from Houzan to the novel in general at this point, but it's a fine shift that's easy to miss. It ends up changing the meaning of the following paragraph.
<But I don't believe this decreases the quality of the work one bit.
Changed to match the previous paragraph's lead-in.
<A story in which all the characters have important parts to play, with a fully understood process that ends with everything falling into place, is certainly beautiful; but a story where one character is so overdeveloped it threatens to disturb the entire balance has its own sort of life. If anything, that sort of story is more interesting. And as long as it's interesting, it's a success.
>In the original work, Houzan is quite an accomplished character.
<In the original work, Houzan's interesting parts are already perfected.
<"Duelist", by Shibata Renzaburo-shi, portrays a more Machiavellian Musashi.
>He is generally portrayed in these kinds of patterns. Or perhaps we should just call him a complex character.
<These patterns are then gathered and rearranged, or perhaps merged.
>And as a result... Well you can call it superiority complex (TN: adapted because I believe the literal saying doesn't make sense in english), or maybe it's just stubborn pride. But my image that came to be didn't exactly follow novel nor drama. After all, and most important, this is a manga.
<And as a result, he's depicted as both lonely and alone. He's also given a superiority complex, or maybe just stubborn pride. But whether it's a novel or a drama, that image has stuck. Even more so in manga.
五輪書 is The Book of Five Rings (also written as 五輪の書), written by Musashi Miyamoto.
<That image always felt out of place to me. I can't possibly imagine Musashi being the kind of man that says things like "I want to become strong". Earnestly reading and considering the preface of The Book of Five Rings should make that clear.

{Text}
(TN: This page starts with sentence ending particles from the last page, connecting the two, and I didn't notice it sooner. So the first sentence from this page still belongs to the last paragraph of the last.)
Such is Musashi's current image, that of a genius dragged down to an ordinary person's level, to make him a more sympathetic character.
By the way, I should better define what I meant by "strong". He could use all kinds of weapons properly, and knew what the most efficient way to kill an enemy was. A little different from your average shounen manga vision.
Despite being this troublesome person, he had many skills and hobbies, although he was far from being a master on these, and also had many friends. He was a very sociable person, with a talent for being interested in many kinds of topics.
It's said he couldn't find a lord to serve anywhere he went. But I think he disliked court service from the very beginning (quite the eccentric person), or at least this upfront personality is more in line with his many achievements.
Despite not having steady work, he had fortune on his side. He was very skilled at ripping off money from people, earning him a small income of sorts. In spite of that he wasn't stingy, but rather quite the generous person.
If the Doubougoen is to be trusted (TN: An essay written in the middle of the Edo period. Written by Katsutoshi Shoji) then Musashi was especially fond of Yoshihara red light district's workers and prostitutes, in Edo (TN: how Tokyo used to be called). It must have been a lot of fun. If true, that is.
Historical facts should not be contained. But fiction doesn't need to follow these facts by the letter. This is a busyness after all, and it's crucial to attract sympathy from ordinary people. But, unlike in fiction, that's the kind of character that stands out the most in factual history.
Whenever Miyamoto Musashi comes up as a character, as a manga artist I can't help but tackle the subject more seriously.
TN: In the last omake page, I mistakenly switched the order of Musashi's names. I wrote Musashi Miyamoto (name-surname) and it should be Miyamoto Musashi (surname-name, the same way we've been doing with other names so far).

Also on the matter of the omake pages (I'm catching up on board activity for the day, hang on) I vote we release them as separate chapters. One single page chapter volume 1, and one 3 pages chapter after volume 3. On mangadex these usually use decimal numbers, so it should be 18.5 for volume 3, and Catura's page in vol 1 should be 1.5

Shit, I hope 'm not too late for this, but I need to point out some things for chapter 18
>Chipukara
It should be chipuka. -ra is a pouralizing suffix, and since it might be used for both chipuka (tribe) or chipuka (people) we went with the chipuka
>Tigi-Tigil
I think this warrants at least a small TN.
"TN: Her name was first translated as 'Tigi-Tigiru', but later research revealed the right way to pronounce it was Tigi-Tigil. Japanese pronounciation has a hard time differentiating between R and L, that's why."

>Despite being this troublesome person, he had many skills and hobbies, although he was far from being a master on these, and also had many friends. He was a very sociable person, with a talent for being interested in many kinds of topics.
玄人どころか達人レベル means "even more than expert, master level". タレント性 refers to the Japanese-specific meaning of the English word "talent", which is an entertainer.
<Despite being this troublesome person, he mastered many skills and hobbies, and also had many friends. He was a very sociable person, and could entertain on many different topics.
>But I think he disliked court service from the very beginning (quite the eccentric person), or at least this upfront personality is more in line with his many achievements.
<But I think he loved his freedom (or was just eccentric) and disliked court service from the very beginning, a reading that is more in line with his many achievements.

<Written history doesn't contain the entire truth, and fiction doesn't need to follow it to the letter. This is a business after all, and it's crucial to attract sympathy from the average person. But sometimes a historical character leaves an impression greater than his fictional portrayal.

Anyway, today marks one year since I started translating manga, with >>32876
I literally started right after finishing Tae Kim's guide, and have been on and off other sources for grammar since then. It has been a lot of fun, and I'd like to encourage others to take on the task as well. Hopefully I'll keep doing this for a long time.
Special thanks to the many typesetters and proofreaders who lent their help along the way.
To commemorate, I've put some extra effort in squeezing more heavy pages today that and thanks to the fortunate coincidence that I have had nothing to do to for the whole day

>The じゃない is another "aren't you?" situation.
I wanted to go with that, but since it didn't have a か in the end, I thought it was going for a real negative.
<A method based on coercion is not likely to extract the answers we want. It's illogical.
This one still puzzles me. I interpreted it as "coercion will [make the other party] tell you an answer aligned with what you want to hear [as opposed to what you need to hear]" but maybe I made it unnecessarily complicated on myself.
On an unrelated note, how should I paste Houzan into an aniki scene?

The way you interpreted it is correct, I believe, but fitting it into English comes out all over the place. My take on it gets to the point but probably glosses over the details too much. Perhaps something like this?:

Guys, I have a little trifle with my autism. Is there a good synopsis of the manga somewhere?
The one on the index page
>(A boy, with a virus which unlocks the primal beast, desires forgotten memories.)
is old as piss (like a decade+ old), insufficent and poorly translated and I wanted a good description for the new readers who actually rely on it.
I found synopsis of each single volume and novel but not a good one for the whole manga. Of course, if there's a good one, it needs translation, but that's obvious.

After waking up, Mikado Shuhei found himself locked in a cage in a mysterious medical facility. Without his memories, even of who he was, Shuhei now has to fight against beasts who can speak like humans. A woman calling herself Akashi Maya then rescued him from this predicament.

お留め流 (also 御留流 and お止め流, pronounced おとめりゅう) refers to martial arts schools that refused to interact with any other schools in order to keep their skills secret. It's a specific term with no common translation that I can find, so my suggestion is "secret school".
<As a secret school from the Satsuma feudal province, we have avoided spreading our knowledge.

Happy Fourth for the Americans!
Houzan's rough accent is really thick, glad he stopped talking like that after the flashback. As for translating it, sticking in the occasional "ya" for "you" and such pretty much covers it while avoiding specific English preconceptions ("he's a redneck", "he's ghetto", etc.).

予定調和 does mean "pre-established harmony", but it's gained an extra meaning in Japan of "hackneyed".

<If we get Baku-san drunk, he'll agree to it!
>First, we need to master everything about Mexico!
ゆこう is an old way of saying 行こう , still heard sometimes in songs. The outfits the author and Watanabe are wearing are references to Baku's Onmyouji (that's also why he calls her Honeybug), so he's talking old-style to match.
<First, we need to go to Mexico for data-collecting!

Together, the second and third bubbles:
"[Rather than] being a serious cartoon drawer, (真面目なポンチ絵描きなんざな) a gloomy rakugo comedian (陰気な噺家) is more appropriate! (よりサマにならねえだろうがよ!)"
<I'd rather be a gloomy comedian

The holy
King of
Turning
Chakra
To typesetter: maybe leave the big kanji as is, erase only the furigana, and add the translated parts under each kanji
TN: Here's another weird reference. 転輪聖王(pronounced "Tenrinjöö"), translated by google as "King of Wheels" (an awful translation, it leaves a lot untranslated), is an indian Buddhist idea of a perfect king that rules according to the Dharma. It has the kanji for 転 (turning, changing), 輪 (literally "ring", but can mean "chakra" in this context) and 聖王 (holy king). It's hard to translate it from japanese because any western reference to the term simply translates directly from the indian Buddhist name "Chakravar Tirrajaan" (original: चक्रवर्तिराजन्). I think we should make a TN page for this.

>*Turn the teachings of buddha!
法輪 is also translated as "Dharma-Chakra", or "The Wheel of Dharma". Given the line's explicit command to "turn" the 法輪 and the actual use of "turning of the Wheel" in some Buddhist literature online, I'd argue for using this meaning instead.
<*Turn the Wheel of Dharma!
22-05 panel 6
>*Turn the teachings of buddha anew!
There's an explicit phrase for setting in motion the Wheel of Dharma, 初転法輪, which is basically what this sentence commands.
<*Set in motion the Wheel of Dharma!

>*It's fulfilled. "Bojisowaka"!!
Based on the link you provided in >>108588 , it looks like the Japanese next to the sutra is the author's translation of it.

<*It has been fulfilled. Rejoice! "Bojisowaka"!!

I know you're obviously deflecting from you're attraction to my 8 and a half inch cock which you are obviously drawn to with your mouth like a moth to a flame. Mouth = moth in this case. Seriously, man, everything is going to be fine. I've had even more family stuff pile on with more deaths and quadruple bypasses in the past few weeks but I'm committed to get this out. Got to be strong in the face of adversity. It sucks but it will be okay. With the script getting ahead it just means I can get caught up quickly. The translator is constant which is the best possible scenario for me and he's ahead compared to the meager results I can provide with the time I put into this manga. It takes time to clean, redraw and especially typeset the manga. Also I do a lot of translation of sound effects which takes time to translate but there are many more bubbles to fill than the script because of that. I don't want to claim a translation title in the credits for that but it is something that slows me down. In the end I'm happy with my work and the work of the other people who contribute to this manga. I'm sorry for being so slow but give me a minute and I will catch up faster than you can say rabbit rabbit.

Thank you for your consideration. I don't want to get too deep into it but my aunt is still in hospice so that means funeral arrangements are being made. Then her brother, my uncle, just had a quadruple bypass surgery so we don't know how long he has. Then two of the older people in my family I haven't met but my mom knew pretty well have died which was hard on her. I feel worse for my mom. She's closer to all of these people than I am but she's a trooper and does what she has to do. She's stronger than me.

It's more like, we were introduced to a facade conflict with supposedly well defined sides at first, and now that things are developing we start asking new questions. I can see why they're complaining. But it only becomes a complicated if you try to answer those questions with the limited amout of information we have so far. This early in the story, it's best to just notice who's with who and kind of roll with it. By the end of this volume things will get even more crazy!
Plus, the fact that Mikado has been lied to before (and most likely is being lied to now, again) only adds to that.

Yeah I just read that in the comments on MangaDex. The thing is that there was a diagram right after the Kimnara fight that did explain the dynamics. They must have forgotten about it. Anyways it's really not that complicated. Godai is with the Thalamus group. Thalamus group is in league with Zombist with the majority of the Dokkaku Soldiers led by Houzan. They oppose the Hijikata group which runs the Non-Thalamus group lead by Kawabata and the Hijikata group's leader's bastard son runs the Hijikata group's Security force. On the side lines is Metzabok in Mexico which is spying on both sides and the Chipuka tribe which originated the virus. Mikado is in the middle and connected to it all but we don't know how yet because he doesn't have his memories back and we view the story through him for the most part.

I'll start adding in sfx translations by translating all of them, then paring it down over time after discussion with the translator and typesetter. {Book cover} Tiger Poet, by Atsushi Nakajima.
TN: The book has an interesting synopsis, it's pretty relevant to the manga/novel's context:
“Tiger-Poet” (short story) by Atsushi Nakajima
English Publication History: Modern Japanese Stories: An Anthology (Charles E. Company, 1962)
Original: Japanese (山月記), 1942
Translated by Ivan Morris, 1962
Synopsis: Li Cheng passed the civil servant tests with much ease and was held in high regard. After quickly becoming promoted and gaining some experience, he felt that he was above the urbane drudgery and committed himself to writing; however, finally live hand-to-mouth, he reapplied for civil service at a disgracefully low position. The drudgery driving him mad, he leaps out of an inn one day and disappears. Yet one day, one of his old classmates comes across Li Cheng in the forest, but Li Cheng has since taken the form of a tiger, who lapses from animal- to human-state while maintaining his speech and poetry.

TL here.
I agree abou "chipukara" then. There will deffinetly be confusions in the future if we don't change. We could add a brief TN:
TN: There was a confusion during previous translations of chipuka/chipukara. "-ra" is a common japanese pluralizing suffix, so it was left out in previous instances. Now that it was given another meaning, it will be properly translated from now on.

Given the number of quotes from this story that have popped up, I looked around and found a translated copy from here:
https://epdf.pub/modern-japanese-stories.html
It's also directly on that webpage but in bad copy-paste format.
The first quote comes from page 459 and I think our version is close enough to be explained as natural translator differences. This part is from page 463 and both the manga author and the story translator seem to have taken some liberties for plot and readability.
故人 does mean "deceased" but the furigana turns it into "friend". The manga author may have swapped in the kanji to make it match the plot (since both are Zombists). Based off the lines in the manga and the translated version of the story, perhaps something like this would work:
<["If I meet you again on the road like we have today, I might not recognize you as an old friend, and will tear you apart and eat you without a single regret."
>Atsushi Nakajima - Tiger Poet / Arata Library]

These last two pages are a foray into japanese exposition, and characteristically hard to digest. I simply don't know how to put into a concise sentence all the stuff she spewed. And to end with a strange (out of place, maybe?) imperative sentence even.
Also, brace yourselves. This chapter is going to go by FAST!
About the Battle of Okehazama (From wiki)
The Battle of Okehazama (桶狭間の戦い Okehazama-no-tatakai) In June 1560, Imagawa Yoshimoto, with an army of about 25,000 men, set forth on a march to Kyoto. Entering the Oda territories in Owari Province, he first took the border fortresses of Washizu and Marune before setting up camp in a wooded gorge known as Dengaku-hazama. This was all reported to Oda Nobunaga by his scouts and, in response, Nobunaga then led his own forces into position at a temple called Zenshō-ji, a short distance away, on the other side of the Tōkaidō road.
Had Nobunaga decided on a frontal assault, the battle would have most likely been lost, as his army was heavily outnumbered by the Imagawa forces. A frontal assault would have resulted in defeat and an attempt to hold out at Zenshō-ji would have only lasted a few days. Because the odds were against their side, some of Nobunaga's advisers suggested "to stand a siege at Kiyosu". Nobunaga refused, stating that "only a strong offensive policy could make up for the superior numbers of the enemy", and calmly ordered a counterattack.
Oda left a dummy army at Zenshō-ji with a large number of banners, to give the impression that this was the location of his main force. Meanwhile, Oda's main force (between 2,000 and 3,000 men) moved through the forest undetected to the rear of the Imagawa army at Dengaku-hazama from the north.
The Imagawa samurai did not expect an attack, and that afternoon was very hot. The Imagawa were celebrating their recent victories at Dengakuhazama. An afternoon thunderstorm further shielded Oda's soldiers' advance.
When the storm passed, Oda's men poured into the camp from the north, and the Imagawa warriors lost all discipline and fled from the attackers. This left their commander's tent undefended, and the Oda warriors closed in rapidly. Imagawa Yoshimoto, unaware of what had transpired, heard the noise and emerged from his tent shouting at his men to quit their drunken revelry and return to their posts. By the time he realized, moments later, that the samurai before him were not his own, it was too late to organize a defense. Yoshimoto was attacked by Mōri Shinsuke and Hattori Koheita. Yoshimoto engaged them in melee, and parried their initial attack, but was soon overcome and killed.

Snakes are possibly one of the most difficult to draw animals for a mangaka. The only person I can think of who can capture a snake's moving body and it's texture in a realistic way is Yaguchi Takao-sensei. In manga, snakes are almost always drawn with a sickle-shaped neck, but I chose to not follow that trend. I don't think the pose of a threatened cobra should be the only one I could use. When laid flat on a surface, a snake's skeletal structure bends loosely, but when stanting vertical it doesn't.
Naturally, when it comes to works of fiction, there are people who prefer to draw them unrealistically. For example, Tezuka Osamu has drawn snakes with their eyes closed. The same Tezuka who can draw the segments of a hornworm in painstaking detail. I'm pretty sure he knows snakes don't have eyelids.
Well then, Sandira is a mammal, a human, that being the case, the way he moves is not exactly that of a snake. It just isn't. Ok, now I think I dug myself into a hole. Because mammals have only seven vertebrae in their necks. On that note, their necks can't move in a winding way. So please pretend his neck has developed some kind of remarkable cartilage.
Now... for those stealth cells... yeah... Think about those reflective structures commonly used in road signs. It's something like that. Diffuse reflection and specular reflection work in completely different ways, so I suppose controlling the reflection of light takes a considerable awareness of one's own situation, it must be very difficult.
Furthermore, there's the matter of his tail. Other Dokkaku soldiers's tails are located in their ancestral's location, coming out of their coccyx. Instead of being a degenerated and extinguished part, it was restored into a functional organ. Actually, due to evolution's irreversible nature, maybe we should call it an artificial development. However, Mikado's final form might not follow that route.
When it comes to the Avatar Effect's style of evolution, this one had it quite differently.

<The only person I can think of who can capture a snake's moving body and texture in a realistic way is Yaguchi Takao-sensei. In manga, snakes are almost always drawn with a sickle-shaped neck, but in reality they don't really do that- the pose a threatened cobra takes is probably the only exception. A snake's skeletal structure is made to easily bend horizontally but not vertically.
>Diffuse reflection and specular reflection work in completely different ways, so I suppose controlling the reflection of light takes a considerable awareness of one's own situation, it must be very difficult.
<Diffuse reflection and specular reflection work in completely different ways, so controlling the reflection of light would require considerable awareness of one's own situation. It would be very difficult... just go along with it.
<Other Dokkaku soldiers' tails are located in their ancestral location, simply coming out of their coccyx. But in his case, certain parts devolved and disappeared, and a more functional organ was restored. From an evolutionary point of view, this is impossible and unnatural. But, well, Mikado's final form looks the way it does, too.
>When it comes to the Avatar Effect's style of evolution, this one had it quite differently.
<It's one example of how the Avatar Effect produces different results than species evolution.

TN: It does look like the original work's speaker is talking in general instead of specifically himself. For these two passages, I think the effect is stronger if we use the official translation, since Mikado is also meant to be included in the "neither beast nor human" comparison.

Oddly enough, I remember チェストオ! being used all the time in fighting manga/anime/etc. as a shout while striking or for getting yourself hyped, but after looking it up it turns out no one actually does that in real life. At most it seems to have been used as you said, a shout to encourage someone who's about to do something (run a marathon, begin a sparring match, etc.).
https://detail.chiebukuro.yahoo.co.jp/qa/question_detail/q1442033589
Here, Houzan might be using it as a reference to those anime/manga/etc. shouts since he's clearly a huge otaku (or at least, the author is). If we go with the meaning of "shout meant to get you pumped up", something like
<Hoo-rah
or
<Hai-yaahh
or even
<Yippie-ki-yay
would somewhat match. I'm at a loss to think of better ones so any suggestions would be great.

*But that's not even the main problem here!
*This guy didn't even made an effort to hide in the first place!!
=2==========
*He's been sitting there from the beginning!!!
>Namaste.
=3==========
>Mind if I tell you something?
=4==========

>You Dokkaku soldiers
>Have got some crazy developed five senses, taking in a colossal amount of information.

>You can actually function pretty well.
=2==========
>But because you can detect another person's presence easily, without even putting any thought into it,
>Then you tend to think you're safe if you don't feel a presence.
>When the time comes to put your minds to work, you simply leave that kind of thought processing to your subconscious.
=3==========
>Let me tell you one thing. Those moments are exactly where the danger lies.
>So please be more careful.
26-31

*He's just like air!!
=3==========

26-32
>That mystery will be answered in the next chapter.

<you end up assuming you're safe if you don't immediately feel anything.
>When the time comes to put your minds to work, you simply leave that kind of thought processing to your subconscious.
"When you have to focus on thinking (思考作業に専念する時), you unconsciously suppress your senses (無意識に感覚機能を抑えちまう)"
