Yup, this is an alternative formula found in his twitter:
Damage reduce = Defense / dmg you get (max 80%, can increase through passive/trait/class/…)

Man he make the formula on screenshot look kinda confuse, if i am not wrong, it should look like this:
FinalDamage = Dmg × (1 - Defense/Dmg)
Clamp DR between 0% and 80%.
(No minimum DR. Only maximum DR.)
