 No.2122366 [Open Thread]

Andy W. Sidaris (1931–2007) made a series of twelve low-budget action films from 1985 to 1998 with Playboy Playmates in the lead roles. He referred to these as his tripple B films – Bullets, Bombs, and Babes. Sidaris won an Emmy for his sports coverage before he began writing and directing independent action/comedy skinflicks with models; Dona L. Speir, Hope Marie Carlton, Roberta Vasquez, Julie Strain, Julie K. Smith, and Cynthia Brimhall.

These films are honestly some of the most entertaining action films I have seen; they are well-made with beautiful actresses/models, plenty of nudity and action. Going by his œuvre and the interviews, Andy was a national treasure.

All twelve films have been released on DVD, and on Blu-ray by Mills Creek, all of them packed with bonus material.

Okay so I watched these up until Guns. Hard Ticket to Hawaii is the only one that is transcendent. Lightning in a bottle. All the rest are crap.

I like Malibu Express a lot, and I think the films are very solid up till Savage Beach.

While not as glorious as Hard Ticker to Hawaii, I think the rest are better and more enjoyable than most recent action films. The look of the films he made in the 1980s just have that extra appeal to me. Hard Ticket to Hawaii brought everything together perfectly; it is undeniably his magnum opus.

I will say that his fascination with miniature airplanes and remote controlled cars could have been reined it at times. Arlene could have tardwrangled him on that point.

Pat Morita plays the villain in Do or Die, and R. J. Moore, the son of Bond actor Roger Moore, plays the villain in Fit to Kill.

Not yet seen his 1973 film Stacey!. Heard it is a lot like Malibu Express but with a woman as the protagonist. He was working on another film by the time he died, and there is some artwork for a comic book floating around out there.

Yeah, but I am really autistic about audio and picture quality, and I am addicted to audio commentary tracks.

And, of course, https://annas-archive.org/ for all your books, magazines, journals, &c. The Internet Archive allows you to search through their archived books, which is very handy if you are looking for anything specific.

You might be surprised at the quality available on archive and ok.ru. Sometimes though you just have to accept that a shitty print is all that's available though. One that comes to mind is "I Love Trouble." I never could find a solid release of that one.

I have watched some films on The Internet Archive (Berkeley Square from 1933 film) and YouTube (Murder by the Clock from 1931 with Lilyan Tashman), but usually as a last resort.

The version of Berkeley Square on TIA was actually in much better quality than the torrent I found.

You can either go for the Harmy "De-Specialized editions" which are Frankenstein patchworks using multiple sources, or the Project 4K versions which are taken from scans of cinema prints scanned with either DNR or no DNR.

The important thing to remember though is neither of these are perfect quality. Personally I recommend the Project 4K versions, or at least 4K77 as both Empire and Jedi have fewer noticeable changes. I say noticeable because for every added Jabba scene and Jedi Rocks change that people scream about, there are a dozen other changes that nobody either notices or never talks about, because they're actually good changes. I won't lie and say that it doesn't bug me that there is no "unaltered" version of the film available for purchase, but the question is how "unaltered" do you want it?

I probably would bail. The series has lost its appeal since the awful 3D animated Clone Wars series and Disney taking over.

The Han Solo spinoff lost them money and all the announced projects sound shit.

The Gosling film is the only one I am even remotely curious about. The fact that he signed on makes me think Disney is trying to regain the male audience.

Not seen any of the Disney flicks, and I doubt I will watch another SW film.

Might be nice to have a thread for all shows, cartoons, films, &c. that are in the public domain.

According to Wikipedia Carnival of Souls is not in public domain, but they give no actual source for their claim. According to this blogpost from the University of Utah the film is in the public domain: https://blog.lib.utah.edu/saltair-re-animated-av-archive-footage-accompanies-new-release-carnival-souls/

Many high resultion options to choose from on The Internet Archive and YouTube (even a colorised version): https://archive.org/search?query=carnival+of+souls+1962

https://1337x.to/torrent/4956270/Carnival-of-Souls-1962-RM-1080p-BluRay-x265-HEVC-10bit-AAC-commentary-HeVK-Herk-Harvey-Candace-Hilligoss-Sidney-Berger-classic-60s/

The Terror from 1963, directed by Roger Corman (+ Francis Ford Coppola, Jack Nicholson, Jack Hill, &c., &c.) has a production that is arguably more interesting than the film itself, but while story meanders and suffers from the people behind the camera making things up as they go along and then handing it off to someone else to finish, the film looks good and has a great cast; Boris Karloff, Jack Nicholson, & Sandra Knight.

Messiah of Evil from 1973 is one of the most underrated and overlooked horror films of the 1970s.

A real shame they only shot the Pilot of Twin Peaks in the PNW. They did sprinkle in a bunch of footage they shot up there thru the two seasons, but none of the L.A./Southern California exteriors they shot afterwards quite match.

IMHO the biggest misstep they did on The X-Files was moving to California with season six onwards.

Dan O’Bannon’s underrated The Resurrected from 1991 was shot in/around Vanvouver as a stand-in for New England, and it looks great. Top notch special effects as well.

Weirdly I did not think it worked on Xena: Warrior Princess with New Zealand as a stand-in for ancient Hellas/Greece. Even Australia would have been a better choice.
