I still don't understand. how are they expecting that to work? will it be the client or the server which pays? when do they not have to pay? is there anything regarding paying at all? I stayed completely out of that stuff. I don't involve myself in that kind of stuff.

well, I don't know how this will work either, but I just hope this will free smaller ISPs to come up and provide internet, so I don't get stuck with an ISP what want to offer internet like cable.

how do they expect phone connections to work where it's already paid for a set amount of data?
Isn't it just not really possible?

Let's hope you're right. People are pretty upset about it already. I would think it would create an even bigger uproar once it passed and ISPs started milking websites for extortion money and other shady stuff!
But I guess it's the US president making appointments into the FCC?
>>55509
Yeah, quite possible. And presumably, (for profit) sites that already charge their users would be hit the hardest? Since sites that don't have money don't have anything to give. But maybe they could still slow them down a notch to motivate them to use advertising or other nasty stuff! Gah that's an awful thought.
>>55511
>will it be the client or the server which pays?
It must be the server / site owners, imo. They'll just say "Okay, you want your users to have decent access to your site, pay up." and if they do want it, they will pay up (and will be forced to charge their users [more] money). Or they might even just stifle speech they don't like.
>>55512
(yeah but you'll have to find out about smaller ISP on not-internet!)

they had unlimited data, but after you went passed a point, your data was slowed, and they throttled apps, so you would use their apps.

w-well, they still do a similar thing, right? you have limited data but they charge you lots of money after you reach a certain point, r-right?
but what does that have to do with per-website type of stuff? that's where I'm confused.

>>55519
They should. Though I think they already tried pulling similar things off before, so now that they'll explicitly be able to, it's clear they'll try!
>maybe just flyers in the mail or something!

I hope that people don't get bullied by it too much though, if it does happen. and hopefully it doesn't last.

if they outright deny a paying customer service, thats fraudulent and violates terms of service

the point is that TOR (with the proper encryption) makes it so that not even the NSA can create a backdoor for it. You can get traced, sure, but its nothing an ISP has the tools for
TOR makes it so that they know you use it, but they dont know what sites you went to. So if they deny you service without reasonable evidence, or a stretch of a "good" reason, then they are cornered.
Fuck them

Yeah.
I guess that's true. It might even fall under the first amendment, if they just denied access ti a site (wait, actually I guess that only applies to the government, so probably not).
Though, couldn't they just change their terms of service?

We provide a service by giving you access to sites depending on how much those sites pay us. I dunno. I remember a story of how these companies that offer financial counselling are not obliged to provide counselling to their customers' benefit.
>>55534
But they won't have to know where you per se are going. They just need to adjust the speed to the sites according to how they pay up.
