That's the winning move. Remaining scenarios are as follows:

>If white queen captures D1 or moves to E1, then black queen moves to G2 and checkmates the king. The same goes for any irrelevant move like moving a pawn or bishop, since the white queen is now pinned and cannot stop a G2 checkmate.

>If white moves rook to F3 to stall the inevitable, black queen captures rook at F3 and situation is hopeless. White has a turn to move pawn or bishop but none of his possible moves can prevent the G2 checkmate.

>If white moves king to F2 he gets a little breathing space, but black rook captures white queen at F1 and checks the king. King captures rook at F1 because he has to. Black queen moves to B1, placing checking the king again, after which white king can either move to E2 or F2. Black queen moves to B2 and checks the king either way. No matter what white does, black's queen captures the rook at A3 and while the game still goes on for a little while, it's pretty hopeless for white since black has 5 pawns, a queen, and a bishop while white has 3 pawns and 1 bishop. Unless black spontaneously starts misplaying and loses his queen, the game is eventually his.

I believe the answer is White rook to G3 check. Scenarios are as follows:

>1. Black knight captures G3. White queen moves to G4, check again. (Black queen can move to G5 but will be captured by white queen, continuing the check.) King moves out to F8. Queen moves to G7 checkmate.

>2. Black knight/queen moves to G5, blocking the check. White rook captures black knight/queen at G5, check again. From here, two possibilities emerge.

>>2(a). Black captures the white rook at G5 with his remaining piece, white queen captures black piece at G5, check again. Black king moves to F8, white queen moves to G7 checkmate.

>>2(b). Black moves king to F8 instead of capturing the rook. White moves rook to G8, checking the king. King captures rook because it is the only option. White queen moves to G4, check again. (Remaining black piece can move to G5 to block check but will be captured by white queen, continuing the check.) King moves out to F8. Queen moves to G7 checkmate.

>3. Black king moves to F8 directly. White bishop moves to G7 check. Black king moves to G8 (sole possible option). White Bishop moves to F6, discovered check by rook. Now the queen can no longer threaten G5 because the bishop is in the way. If black knight captures G3, continue as scenario 1. If black knight moves to G5, continue as scenario 2 into 2(b). If king moves to F8 again, move white rook to G8 check. King captures G8 rook by necessity. Move white queen to G4 and it's the same scenario as 1, except white can sacrifice a knight instead of a queen to accomplish nothing.

Knight to C6 or F5 "wins" the game. In reality it's more like a vicious fork. Black can basically either capture the white knight and lose his queen or receive a checkmate. If the knight lives, black knight to E7 leads to instant checkmate, so that's not an option. If white captured C6 with his knight and black captures C6 with his black queen, then white has enough of a turn advantage over the black queen to just casually start moving the white queen over to H6 before black's king can leave G8 and then move the queen to G7 and checkmate the king without the black queen being able to stop it, so taking white knight with the black queen at C6 is just a losing option. If black captures the white knight (whether it was placed at C6 or F5) with the pawn, black loses his queen to the white queen and the game is actually not yet won, but it's nevertheless treated as a foregone conclusion. Strictly speaking white knight captures C6 is probably the better move so that black loses both a queen and a knight, but either way it's treated as a foregone conclusion that white has an insurmountable advantage over black.

>not posting white rook to C1 instead

Your chess humor needs help.

>>309844

I think the reason you're not getting much of a response on your chess puzzles is that you need to post easier, noob-friendly chess puzzles. We're talking absolute novice chess puzzles. And then you can gradually increase the difficulty. Right now I reckon a lot of people are lost.

Those chessgames.com difficulty markings are pretty much bullshit. I think they use some shitty algorithm which checks how many moves it takes to win and rate the difficulty of the puzzle based on that number, but a lot of games were conceded so a one move to instant forfeit between professionals might involve 10 more moves to seal the deal for an actual checkmate, and in some cases the forfeit is caused not by an instant win but by obtaining a major advantage.

Sorry, I meant that if the C6 white knight lives, white knight to E7 leads to instant checkmate. And if the F5 white knight lives, the knight threatens instant checkmate with H6 instead.

So I've never done chess puzzles before, but how do you decide how Black moves? Do you just play both sides as well as you can? What if you miss something on Black's side and only win with White because you didn't play Black well enough? Would that be considered an incorrect solution?

I tried looking this up, but all I can find is online chess puzzles where a cpu controls Black.

>So I've never done chess puzzles before, but how do you decide how Black moves? Do you just play both sides as well as you can?

Correct. Your goal is to find a way you can force your opponent into a checkmate no matter how well he plays. With some of these game winning moves, it is possible to escape the checkmate but usually at the cost of being screwed over so badly that you might as well forfeit. That's worth keeping in mind because some of these puzzles basically win by giving the enemy a choice of:

A) You're fucked because I took your valuable pieces.

B) You lose.

And then they forfeit. These solutions are different from the ones where you force an enemy into a checkmate because they win by seeking out overwhelming advantage instead.

>What if you miss something on Black's side and only win with White because you didn't play Black well enough? Would that be considered an incorrect solution?

Correct. That would be incorrect. Anyway, the point of these puzzles is to get good, so feel free to give them a try. Don't be afraid of messing up or asking for advice if you're proper stumped.

>Setup

Chessboard is set up like so. Remember that a1 must be black and that the queen always takes her color. White goes first.

>Pieces

There are six types of pieces on the board. To take an opponents piece, you must move one of your pieces on theirs in accordance with their movement. The only exception is the pawn.

Pawns' can only move forward one space at a time and are only able to capture pieces that are forwardly diagonal to them. On their first turn, they can be moved two pieces. Once they reach the other side, they are turned into a piece of your choosing as long as it's not a king. There are eight pieces.

Rooks move any number of spaces horizontally and vertically. There are two of them and occupy the corners of the board.

Knights have this octagon ring around it, and they can jump to any point on that octagon. The key is to remember that the square a knight moves to is always opposite in color to the square they currently occupy. They are the only piece that can jump over others. There are two of them. I feel that this warrants an image, because fuck those people who say "L-shaped."

Bishops move any number of spaces diagonally. There are two of them, one occupying a black square and the other a white square.

Queens can move any number of spaces diagonally, horizontally, and vertically, making them effectively the most powerful piece on the board. There is one of them.

Kings can also move diagonally, horizontally, and vertically, but only one space at a time. These are the most valuable pieces, as the game is lost if you are unable to protect it. Check is when the king is being threatened by an opposing piece but you still have legal moves. You must get yourself out of check on your turn by moving the king to safety, taking the piece threatening the king, or defending the king with another piece in front of it. You cannot do the latter if the attacking piece is a pawn or a knight because of how their movement and capturing works. Checkmate is when the king is being threatened and there are no legal moves you can make to get out of it. Stalemate is when there are no legal moves to make, but you are not in check. The game ends in a draw.

There are only two Situational Moves. The first commonly used special move is castling, Castling is done with an unmoved king and and unmoved rook when there are no pieces between them and when the king is not in check. The king is moved in the direction of the rook two spaces and the rook is moved inward three spaces if it is the left side, or two spaces if it is the right side. The second, and rather rare special move is the en passant. If a pawn is moved up ahead there is an opposing pawn next to it, then that opposing pawn may capture by moving diagonally behind it. The last two images will give you a better understanding as I fear my description is lacking.

>Strategy

Head over to lichess.org. Pretty much everything you could ever learn is there. Work on visualizing techniques to help you figure out how your opponent can move and how your opponent is vulnerable.

Which is better, Go or Shogi?

 No.401976

>>401964

I like Go better, but Shogi is more like chess. I feel like a Chess player would take to Shogi faster because of that if they can get past the moonrune pieces. But Go has extremely simple rules that can be completely learned in their entirety within 3 minutes, but after you learn the rules it leaves you feeling cold and alone since the board is so big and the principles that guide strategy are so vague. It's kind of hard to even get to the point where you can even think about where to move since you're left wondering what any move does.

They're kind of opposites in that way: Shogi turns people off from the beginning since the pieces are tiles with moonrunes on them, but if you get past that you find a familiar setting that a chess player could take to like a fish to water. Go is completely abstract and has universal appeal because of that, but once you've learned the rules and gotten interested, you're left wondering how anyone has any idea of what to do.

That's the thing about Go. You can't really play it and enjoy it at all unless you approach it seriously and try to learn some strategy. With Chess, two people who've never played it before can read the rules and immediately start having fun. Go isn't like that, Go for beginners is confusing. But if you delve into it a bit, you'll find a very interesting game.

Go Rules!

Board looks like this, the game starts with an empty board. Board sizes can vary, but the most common is 19x19, but 13x13 and 9x9 are played too. 9x9 is good for beginners since 19x19 is pretty huge.

There are two players, black and white. There is only 1 type of piece: a stone.

The game begins with an empty board and both players take turns placing 1 stone on the board which is the only type of move.

Turn order is backwards from chess, Black moves first.

Pieces are played on the cross points on the lines instead of on spaces.

The point of the game is to enclose as many empty points on the board as possible. This is referred to as Territory. If you surround an enemy stone completely it is captured and removed from the game. Captures are worth 1 point, and a point of territory is worth 1 point.

If you place a stone adjacent to another stone, your opponent has to capture all of them at once. You can make long chains that are hard to capture because of this.

Pic 3 depicts a scenario where both players can trade a piece back and forth forever. To prevent this there is a rule called "Ko" which states that the board can never be in the same state twice. So if black captures White's stone by playing at A, then on White's turn, playing at B is an illegal move until he plays somewhere else. After he plays somewhere else and black plays again, playing at B is legal again.

That's it.

Oh yeah, and White gets 6.5 points for free in compensation for going 2nd. The .5 ensures that a tie is impossible unless the compensation is removed. This compensation is called "komi"

Pic 1 is a good example of how to score. The left side is fully surrounded by white stones (the edges of the board count as borders for territory), while the right side is fully surrounded by black stones. This means the left side is white's territory and the right side is black's.

You'll see there are a couple of opposite coloured stones in each player's territory. Don't worry too much about them for now, we consider these stones dead - they are treated as a captured stone for opposing player (so white has 1 prisoner and black has two).

White has a box of size 5x13, so he would have 65 points of territory. However, the white stone within said territory is not a valid point of territory - territory must be unoccupied. Dead stones, such as the black stone do count as an unoccupied point, so white has 64 points of territory. Plus 1 point for the captured black stone, plus 5.5 points of komi (Komi is usually set at 6.5 for 19x19 boards, 5.5 for 13x13 and 4.5 for 9x9) = 70.5 points for white

Black has a box size of 6x13, so he would have 78 points of territory. Subtract the three black stones makes 75 points of territory, plus the two white prisoners makes 77 points.

Black wins by 6.5 points.

See if you can score Pics 2 and 3

This is a very nice one. Rxd7+! is the move. Rxd7+! Kxd7 Nc5+ Many options for black here. Kd8 and Kc7 loses the queen to a knight fork on e6. Ke7 Qe6+ Kd8 Qd7# Ke7 Qe6+ Kf8 Nd7# Ke7 loses. Nc5+ Kd6 Qe6+!, the king's only legal move is to take the knight, Kxc5 b4+ Kd4 The king's too exposed on d4, especially with white queen on e6. Bg2 with the idea to get the h rook to d1 should finish black off. So, Kd6 dies to a pawn. That leaves Kc8. Kc8 Qe6+ Kd8 Qd7# Kc8 Qe6+ Kb8 Qb6+ Kc8 Qc6+ and mate next move with the black king on either d8 or b8. Knight and Queen are so deadly together. Kc8 Qe6+ Kc7 Qd7+ Kb6 Qb7+ Ka5 b4# Qb7+ Kxc5 b4+ Kd4 This position is identical to the earlier one with the black king on d4, except the white queen's now on b7. Again, I think Bg2 breaks black, with the threats of Rd1 and Qd5.

Took me awhile to see how to mate after Kc7, so I looked into Nxa6+. It's close. Easy ones first. Qe6+ Kc7 Nxa6+ Rxa6 Qxa6 is enough material. Nxa6+ Kb7 Bg2+ picks up the rook. Nxa6+ Kd8 Qd5+. Kc8 or Ke8 loses the rook in the corner with check. Ke7 Qb7+. Again, the black king can't go to the 8th rank without losing the rook on a8. And, like in all the variations, the black queen is useless. Kd6 Qc7+ picks up the unprotected, awkward queen. Ke6 may save black.

The only move to avoid checkmate is Qxg4, so at least that much of the solution is obvious. From there I see some paths to white victory, I'm not entirely sure whether or not black still has a chance at that point though.

>The only move

Actually, scratch that. You could also prevent the check with h3. Though my original answer seems to have been the real move.

Well, the knight's just hanging. Black can't recapture after you've taken it with your rook due to the weakness on g7. No counterplay.

Nb4! Rxd3 Nc2+ Kb1 Nxa3+ bxa3 Rxd3 Cute series of checks. In the end, black's up an exchange, and has a winning position.

Bg2 Deadly, silent move. Mate's threatened on both h1 and h2, and white can't cover both threats. Bxf1 is just an exchange after Bxf1 Bxg5.

Qxg4 Qxg4 Nh6# It doesn't just win a knight: It's mate. After the capture of the black knight, white is easily winning.

But are there moves other than Qxg4 that can leave black, though still badly losing, at least not a move away from mate? What would happen after Rxf7 instead?
