Last month I almost ran into an awkward situation while traveling — I tried to pay for a hotel stay, but my crypto card declined. Turned out I’d hit the daily spending limit without realizing it. I never really thought about how these caps work, especially for larger purchases or cash withdrawals. It made me wonder if limits differ a lot between cards, and whether you can adjust them easily or if you’re stuck with the default settings. Yeah, I’ve bumped into that too, especially when I had to pay for several big things in one day. With my current provider, the limits are actually pretty generous — daily spending can go up to €10,000, monthly around €25,000, and cash withdrawals have their own separate cap. Since it’s a crypto debit card with cashback, you get the rewards without much restriction, but it’s still worth knowing your numbers so you don’t get caught off guard. I usually just spread bigger purchases over a couple of days if I’m close to the limit, and it works fine.

I don’t really use cards for large transactions, so I’ve never run into spending limits personally. But I can see how it could be a problem if you’re making travel bookings or buying expensive electronics. Consider the right-angled triangle with vertices (0, 0),

(1, 0), and (0, 1), and suppose we wanted to compute the length of the hypotenuse

of this triangle. Pythagoras’ theorem tells us that this hypotenuse has length √2,

but suppose for some reason that we did not know about Pythagoras’ theorem, and

wanted to compute the length using calculus methods. Well, one way to do so is to

approximate the hypotenuse by horizontal and vertical edges. Pick a large number N,

and approximate the hypotenuse by a “staircase” consisting of N horizontal edges of

equal length, alternating with N vertical edges of equal length. Clearly these edges

all have length 1/N, so the total length of the staircase is 2N/N = 2. If one takes

limits as N goes to infinity, the staircase clearly approaches the hypotenuse, and so in

the limit we should get the length of the hypotenuse. However, as N → ∞, the limit

of 2N/N is 2, not √2, so we have an incorrect value for the length of the hypotenuse.
