aPS3e zdobył rozgłos dzięki temu, że jako jeden z pierwszych emulatorów PS3 na Androida faktycznie działał. Jednak szybko pojawiły się kontrowersje - twórca projektu, który określał siebie jako „chińskiego dewelopera mieszkającego na wsi”, zaczął zbierać donacje w zamian za dostęp do kodu źródłowego.

Jeszcze większe obawy budziło to, że aPS3e był oparty na emulatorze RPCS3. Było to naruszenie licencji GPL GitHuba, która wymaga, aby każdy projekt bazujący na otwartym kodzie pozostał otwartoźródłowy. W efekcie zarówno repozytorium emulatora, jak i konto jego twórcy zostały usunięte, a strony GitHuba zwracają teraz błąd 404 kiedy próbujemy odwiedzić jego stronę
