i like kolour paint. simple and fast basic image editor.
also i like the mpv player, just makes interacting with video and audio files. i can't stand these complicated players who try to be everything like itunes. i don't want a program to gatekeep me from my media files, i have them neat in folders i just want to doubleklick them from the file explorer. sometimes i have a few instances open while these library players always want to override what i am currently listening to just because i wanted to peek into another file. once you go mpv you can't go back.
i do miss irfan view but gwenview isn't terrible either.

Mint and other such Debian based distros are good for learners, but i recommend moving from them eventually. apt is pretty... rough. Fedora (the name, i know lol) was really beginner friendly and the one i liked most before Arch became my mainstay.

sadly true. you can use WINE and similar to get around a lot of issues. the main issue that comes to mind is some anticheats block Linux users from playing. to get around this i made a VM for Windows through Qemu/KVM. this is by no means a beginner process, but its the coolest thing ive done on Linux. i basically copied a couple scripts and modified them to match my system. when the VM launched, it would unhook the GPU from host and give it to the guest. vice versa when i shutdown. i havent had that setup in quite a while cause i quit playing games that block Linux users.

lol. case in point. WINE has always been able to play Windows games. its a compatibility layer that basically converts windows binaries in to Linux ones. Valve has also came out with proton, which is a fork of WINE. generally the only problem is when anticheat doesnt allow Linux to play.

Everything played on an emulated (ie all the good games) run better than on windows. Almost everything on steam runs with no tinkering necessary. And a few things require command options that you just look up on the same site. And just a few don't actually run at all. But aside from that everything is seamless. I think the only real issue is if you download fan or indie games that don't run through steam.
