Newly unearthed memos show a high-ranking government official who met with Steele in October 2016 determined some of the Donald Trump dirt that Steele was simultaneously digging up for the FBI and for Hillary Clinton’s campaign was inaccurate, and likely leaked to the media.
The concerns were flagged in a typed memo and in handwritten notes taken by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Kathleen Kavalec on Oct. 11, 2016.
Her observations were recorded exactly 10 days before the FBI used Steele and his infamous dossier to justify securing a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant to spy on Trump campaign adviser Carter Page and the campaign’s contacts with Russia in search of a now debunked collusion theory.
It is important to note that the FBI swore on Oct. 21, 2016, to the FISA judges that Steele’s “reporting has been corroborated and used in criminal proceedings” and the FBI has determined him to be “reliable” and was “unaware of any derogatory information pertaining” to their informant, who simultaneously worked for Fusion GPS, the firm paid by the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and the Clinton campaign to find Russian dirt on Trump.

Uber valued at $82 billion in IPO as market jitters, Lyft woes weigh
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Uber Technologies Inc priced its initial public offering on Thursday at the low end of its targeted range for a valuation of $82.4 billion, hoping its conservative approach will spare it the trading plunge suffered by rival Lyft Inc.
It is an underwhelming result for the most anticipated IPO since Facebook Inc’s market debut seven years ago. Uber raised $8.1 billion, pricing its IPO at $45 per share, close to the bottom of the targeted $44-$50 range.
However, the IPO still represents a watershed moment for Uber, which has grown into the world’s largest ride-hailing company since its start 10 years ago.
The year’s biggest IPO comes against a backdrop of turbulent financial markets, fueled by the trade dispute between the United States and China, as well as the plunging share price of Lyft, which is down 23 percent from its IPO price in late March.
Uber’s valuation in the IPO is almost a third less than its investment bankers predicted last year but still above its most recent valuation of $76 billion in the private fundraising market.
The IPO was oversubscribed, but Uber settled for a lower price to avoid a repeat of Lyft’s IPO in late March, which priced strongly then plunged in trade. Uber also wanted to accommodate big mutual funds, which unlike hedge funds put in orders for a lower price.
Like Lyft, Uber will face questions going forward over how and when it expects to become profitable after losing $3 billion from operations in 2018.
“Ultimately, the success of Lyft’s and Uber IPO’s offerings will be judged based on post-IPO performance and how these companies can sustain their growth, while moving toward profitability and lowering their cash burn,” said Alex Castelli, managing partner at advisory firm CohnReznick.
Despite Uber moderating its IPO expectations, some still consider the stock overpriced.

In a letter sent to Morgan Stanley on April 2, Lyft questioned the firm about its alleged role in helping market certain products that would help pre-IPO investors bet against the stock.
CNBC reviewed a copy of this letter, which was signed by Lyft's counsel Peter Stris of the law firm Stris & Maher. Lyft declined to comment.
The letter was prompted by reporting in the New York Post, which said Morgan Stanley had been selling a short product to pre-IPO investors and cited three sources close to the situation.
Lyft asked Morgan Stanley to go on record saying that they did not create such a product, and that they had engaged in the proper due diligence in marketing such a product.
The letter, which copied Lyft's lead underwriters JP Morgan and Credit Suisse, also asks that if Morgan Stanley did engage in such activity that they stop immediately and turn over a list of shareholders who participated.
While the letter requested that Morgan Stanley respond by the end of the day on April 2, two source close to the matter said that as of late Friday, the firm had yet to do so formally. Both people asked for anonymity discussing private details involving the dispute.
However, a Morgan Stanley spokesperson provided a statement to CNBC, saying that the firm "did not market or execute, directly or indirectly, a sale, short sale, hedge, swap or transfer of risk or value associated with Lyft stock for any Lyft shareholder identified by the company or otherwise known to us to be the subject of a Lyft lock-up agreement."
The Information first reported that Lyft and its IPO syndicate had sent a letter to Morgan Stanley over its purported role in creating special instruments for pre-IPO investors to short.
In the letter, Lyft said that it has the ability to take legal action against Morgan Stanley and asked that the firm turn over relevant documents in advance of potential litigation.
Lyft's counsel believes that Morgan Stanley could be found to have engaged in tortious interference with the lock-up agreements if it were true that the firm actively sought to circumvent them.
Lyft's shares plummeted as much as 12% on their second day of trading, following their IPO debut on March 29. Some traders in the market speculated that the drop was partly due to early demand for short selling the shares. The stock rebounded over the course of the week.

The reason you can be confident Q is not a ruse is because it would amount to the cabal explaining how their corruption works. During a town hall on CNN on Thursday, former FBI Director James Comey stated that he believes the findings of the Mueller report would have resulted in obstruction charges against President Trump if he wasn’t the president.
Moderator Anderson Cooper asked, “Do you think he had criminal intent, based on what you have seen now in the Mueller report?”
Comey said, “It sure looks like he did in connection with a couple episodes, the direction to Don McGahn to get the special counsel fired is, to my mind, a flaming example…of corrupt intent.”
Cooper also asked, “I think it’s up to 800 former federal prosecutors who have worked in both Republican and Democratic administrations who have signed a statement saying that Mueller’s findings would have produced obstruction charges against President Trump if he weren’t president. Do you agree?”
Comey responded, “Yeah. I agree.”
Cooper later asked Comey if he thinks President Trump “should be charged when he’s out of office, based on what Mueller has shown?”
Comey answered, “I think the Justice Department will have to take a serious look at that. Whether it’s a wise thing to do to a former president, I don’t know.”

Investors Suing JPMorgan May Redefine the Leveraged Loan Market
Bloomberg) – A group suing JPMorgan Chase & Co. and other Wall Street banks over a loan that went sour four years ago is alleging the underwriters engaged in securities fraud. If successful, the lawsuit could radically transform the $1.2 trillion leveraged lending market.
The defendants say there’s one key problem – unlike bonds, loans aren’t securities. As a result, they’ve filed a petition asking the court to dismiss the suit on those exact grounds.
The debate strikes at the heart of the leveraged loan market, which in recent years has come to look strikingly similar to the higher-profile one for junk-rated bonds. The standardization of loan terms, the deterioration of covenants and the growth of secondary trading continue to blur the lines between the two. Should the plaintiff ultimately prevail, it would dramatically alter how American companies raise debt, according to two industry groups that filed a brief supporting the defendants’ argument last week.
“There are absolutely enormous market consequences if a court determines that leveraged loans are securities,” said J. Paul Forrester, a partner at law firm Mayer Brown who’s not involved in the litigation. “Leveraged loans and lenders would be potentially subject to the same offering and disclosure requirements as securities and would face the same regulatory oversight and enforcement consequences.”
The suit stems from a $1.8 billion loan that JPMorgan and others arranged for Millennium Health LLC – then owned by private-equity firm TA Associates – and sold to investors in 2014. Within a matter of months, lenders saw the value of their loan plunge as the company disclosed that federal authorities were investigating their billing practices. Millennium agreed to pay $256 million to resolve the probe, and would go on to file for bankruptcy.
JPMorgan knew U.S. officials were investigating Millennium when it sold the loan, but didn’t tell investors who were about to buy the debt, Bloomberg reported in 2015. The bankers did not provide the information because Millennium told them it wasn’t material at the time.
“Styled as ‘leveraged loans,’ the debt obligations that defendants sold to the investors back in April 2014 have all the attributes of and, in fact, constituted credit agency-rated and tradeable debt ‘securities,’” the lender trustee wrote in the 2017 suit. As such, the defendants are liable “for sponsoring the materially false presentation of Millennium’s financial condition and business practices.”
Units of Bank of Montreal, Citigroup Inc. and SunTrust Banks Inc. are also listed as defendants in the suit. Bank of Montreal didn’t respond to requests seeking comment on the lawsuit, while the other two declined to comment, as did JPMorgan and a representative for the lenders’ trustee.
“The sophisticated entities that lent Millennium money now try to classify the loan as a ‘security’ and the loan syndication as a ‘securities distribution’ in an attempt to manufacture a securities fraud claim where none is viable, and to avoid the express language of the contracts into which they willingly entered,” JPMorgan and Citigroup wrote in a memorandum last month.
CLO Chaos
No one is saying that a fundamental transformation of the leveraged loan market is imminent. A court ruling in favor of the plaintiff would likely face numerous appeals as the decision works its way through the courts.
Yet if the courts ultimately decide that syndicated term loans are in fact securities, the repercussions would be significant and widespread, according to the Loan Syndications and Trading Association and the Bank Policy institute.
First off, arranging loans would become more cumbersome and costly amid more stringent disclosure requirements. A slower process would deprive borrowers of quick access to capital, while some may shy away from obtaining financing rather than make public confidential information, according to their brief.
And the market for collateralized loan obligations – which provide the bulk of leveraged loan funding – would be thrown into chaos, they wrote. Banks are key buyers of CLOs, but Volcker Rule restrictions bar them from investing in CLOs that own securities. Were loans deemed securities, banks could be forced to offload about $86 billion in existing CLO holdings in the absence of regulatory relief.
“A major disruption in the CLO market would risk reducing that flow of capital – which is a vital resource for a wide spectrum of American businesses – to a trickle,” the industry groups wrote. “Cutting off an important source of capital could have serious consequences for leveraged companies, as well as significant ripple effects throughout the economy.”

Trump Administration Charges Drone Whistleblower With Allegedly Violating Espionage Act
A former language analyst for the United States Air Force, who worked for the National Security Agency, was arrested and charged with violating the Espionage Act and other offenses.
According to the indictment filed in the Eastern District of Virginia, Daniel Hale allegedly disclosed eleven classified documents to a reporter who worked for an online news website. The documents relate to the U.S. government’s targeted assassination program involving armed drones that was expanded under President Barack Obama’s administration.
If the allegations are true, the U.S. government is prosecuting another whistleblower in its zeal to crackdown on leaks and control the flow of information, particularly on national security matters. They are also criminalizing another source, who provided information to The Intercept.
The timeline in the indictment aligns with the release of Intercept founding editor Jeremy Scahill’s Oscar-nominated “Dirty Wars” film, as well as his comprehensive book on U.S. drone operations with the same title.
In October 2015, The Intercept published a “cache of secret documents detailing the inner workings of the U.S. military’s assassination program in Afghanistan, Yemen, and Somalia.” The media organization said the documents were provided by a whistleblower and offered “unprecedented glimpse into Obama’s drone wars.” They were called “The Drone Papers.”
The Intercept granted “the source’s request for anonymity because the materials are classified and because the U.S. government has engaged in aggressive prosecution of whistleblowers.”
Hale also appeared in the 2016 documentary, “National Bird.” He wore a pin supporting U.S. Army whistleblower Chelsea Manning and was following CIA whistleblower Jeffrey Sterling’s prosecution. The FBI raided his home on August 8, 2014, while the film was in production. He reached out to attorney Jesselyn Radack for legal assistance.
The Justice Department filed an indictment on March 7, 2019, and charged Hale with three counts of violating the Espionage Act, one count of violating a code that criminalizes the disclosure of “classified communications intelligence information,” and one count of stealing government property.
It is unclear why the Justice Department took so long to charge Hale with committing any offenses.
Hale was part of Joint Special Operations Task Force in 2012 and identified “targets” for kill/capture. From December 2013 to August 2014, he was a contractor at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.
The indictment alleges Hale searched the internet for information on Scahill in April 2013. He attended an event with Scahill at Busboys and Poets in Washington, D.C., on April 29. The following day Hale signed on to his computer to look for information related to subjects Scahill covered.
On June 8, Hale “sat next to” Scahill at another public event at Busboys and Poets,” which is the government’s awkward way of stating Hale appeared on stage with Scahill during the event. Hale allegedly had dinner with Scahill afterward.

Let's step back to the 2016 election. Think about your own memories of this, but also about what you know now.
If you have dug into the deeper aspects of cabal fuckery, beyond just the Russian Witch Hunt and all that, then you must realize that there is NO WAY that a proper investigation of the HRC emails would ever have been allowed.
Many anons had no idea how deep the fuckery was, so it is reasonable that many Anons formed a negative impression of Comey, thinking that he was avoiding an investigation because he was in cahoots with HRC. But we KNOW that NO REAL INVESTIGATION was possible. So let's look again at his actions in light of that.
If you recall the first investigation, the end result shocked many people, since it seemed very obvious that crimes had been committed. But it was speculated at the time that Comey was TELLING us that, and HINTING that no prosecution was possible, while making it clear that HRC was in the wrong.
And then the second investigation was even more surprising. As ComeyAnon has pointed out, it started on 10/28, one year prior to the first Q post. It was opened JUST before the election, and then quickly closed. ANYONE with any sense percieved that something very strange was going on. And this CERTAINLY had a negative impact on HRC. It doomed her. If Comey was just supposed to sweep things under the rug, he could CERTAINLY have done so much moar effectively. We know now that he was clearly not OVERTLY in league with Trump, so either he is a completely clueless fool (and evidence suggests otherwise) or he was trying to PLAY at following the rules while also sending a signal.
But let's step back and look at the bigger picture… this whole SHOW seems to have been going on much earlier than the first Q post. Trump has likely been working with insider patriots for a long time, and we KNOW that he has worked with the FBI for decades… hmmm…
Let's think about the pros and cons of "The Donald" persona when it came to election time… On the one hand, it got him past the gatekeepers and attracted the constant attention of the Fake News Media. They never thought he would win. And the reality is, he couldn't have won, if he was REALLY just the character he sometimes plays. He NEEDED voters who would have reacted quite negatively to "the Donald" character.
On my reading, there were three main countermoves that attracted voters who initially saw "the Donald" in negative terms:
1) "The Flight 93 Election" by Publius Decius Mus aka Michael Anton aka ?
2) the Ben Carson campaign
3) James Comey and the email theatrics
The first one is obvious, even if you don't yet believe that Anton is going to be very publicly ID'ed as "Q". Clearly, "The Flight 93 Election" swung many voters to the Trump Train. As for Ben Carson, my strong hunch at this point is that his ENTIRE campaign was part of this coordinated op. Work this one out on your own. There are quite a few lucky coincidences….
But consider Comey. His actions regarding BOTH "investigations" seemed to make it clear that some sort of absolute FUCKERY was afoot, and yet that the government was going to do NOTHING. It ALSO spurred many to start digging into the wikileaks documents and realizing that many things were not as they seemed. The upshot was that Comey's actions were likely a MAJOR influence on the actual victory for Trump. Coincidence?

Navy SEAL Chief Eddie Gallagher’s story has been told before, but no one had tried to capture it on video – until now.
A documentary is in the making, and it sets out to tell the truth about the entire case, including what happens after Gallagher’s much-anticipated trial, set to begin May 28, according to Gregg Phillips, founder of Time for a Hero.
“Navy SEAL in the Crosshairs – The Eddie Gallagher Story” is being produced by Phillips and others from the nonprofit Time for a Hero, which fully funds traumatic brain injury (TBI) treatments for Special Operations Forces (SOF) veterans
“The reason we did this was for the Gallaghers,” Phillips told American Military News. “It’s an incredibly gratifying thing for us. It’s a small thing, it doesn’t make a giant difference – but it might.”
Gallagher, 39 and a 15-year Navy SEAL, is charged with premeditated murder, accused of stabbing and killing a critically wounded ISIS fighter during a 2017 deployment to Mosul. He is also accused of shooting at unarmed civilians. He was arrested on Sept. 11, 2018, and was held in Naval Consolidated Brig Miramar in San Diego for more than seven months before President Donald Trump took note of the case. Trump tweeted an order that Gallagher be moved to less-restrictive pre-trial conditions, this after more than 50 members of Congress called for urgent attention to the case and implored investigations into how Navy is handling both the case and Gallagher’s treatment.
The Gallagher family has long been vocal about Eddie’s treatment in the brig, and also about the claims made against him. The family, as well as Rep. Duncan Hunter, has accused the Navy of lying to members of Congress and the White House. Gallagher’s defense team has also accused the prosecution and Naval Criminal Investigative Services (NCIS) of misconduct and withholding information in the case that would help Gallagher. The defense team has also pointed out “unlawful command influence” against Eddie.
Most recently, video footage from a helmet cam shows that Gallagher did not try to kill the captured, critically wounded ISIS fighter, but rather tried to provide medical treatment to him, according to the defense team and new reports.
Phillips had heard of Gallagher’s story before this, and he eventually went out to San Diego for a fundraiser, where he met with and talked to Andrea Gallagher, Eddie’s wife, and Sean Gallagher, Eddie’s brother.
“We started to unpack the story and build a timeline… The more I learned, the more frightening it became,” Phillips said.
He decided to begin to put together a documentary, with Sean, Andrea and Eddie’s permission.
While the original intention was to create a 3- to 4-minute video that would help raise money for the Gallaghers’ mounting legal fees, Phillips quickly realized there was more to this story than a few minutes could do justice.
“We’re going to do a full-blown documentary, so it can be captured in posterity. So other SEALs and Special Forces guys who are dealing with this at least have the background to know what’s happening to other folks. This is something we want everyone to have [for their knowledge],” he pointed out.
Phillips says Eddie Gallagher is not the only service member who has been in this situation before, and that there are many others out there.
“We want to be able to create some momentum around the truth,” he pointed out.
Phillips noted that Time For a Hero is not in any way paying for the documentary; absolutely none of the nonprofit’s funds from donors are going toward the film, he stressed. He and his crew are creating it entirely on their own time, as volunteers, and not being paid.
“None of us are paid. We just care about freedom and liberty, and the people who protect it for us, and that’s Eddie,” he added.
“When this injustice is exposed for what it is, every individual who had a part in this will have to account for what they have done to my husband and our family,” Andrea Gallagher told American Military News. “What has happened is un-American and a form of domestic terrorism that has been unleashed on our family, and we will fight to make sure this never happens to another military service member & their family again.”

Vet sues VA over Bible displayed on POW/MIA memorial table.
On Tuesday, an Air Force veteran filed a federal lawsuit against the director of the Manchester VA Medical Center to remove a Bible on public display.
Air Force veteran and devout Christian James Chamberlain says the Bible displayed in the medical center on the POW/MIA memorial table is a violation of the First Amendment’s establishment of religion clause and should be removed, Military.com reported.
The lawsuit, which targets VA director Alfred Montoya, alleges “that the government may not establish any religion. Nor can the government give favoritism to one religious belief at the expense of others.”
Chamberlain argues in his lawsuit that the table should memorialize anyone that served, not just Christians.
The Bible in question has a deep history and was carried by a WWII POW. It now sits in the entranceway at the medical center on a table that specifically honors missing vets and POWs, according to the Air Force Times.
The table where the Bible is displayed is sponsored by the Northeast POW/MIA Network, a dedicated veteran’s group.
After complaints in January by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, the medical center eliminated the Bible from the display. They had received grievances from 14 patients representing various religions who also felt it was a First Amendment violation.
Complaints then surfaced opposing the Bible’s removal and people began to bring Bibles to the medical center to protest.
Department of Veterans Affairs spokesman Curt Cashour said the Bible was eliminated “out of an abundance of caution.”
The following month, the Bible was back on the table, this time encased in an acrylic box and bolted to the table. The medical center weighed their legal responsibility with attorneys and decided to place the Bible back on the table for good. Cashour said the table is “a secular tribute to America’s POW/MIA community.”
Mikey Weinstein, founder and president of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation said the very presence of the Bible is offensive. He said, “It’s incredibly disrespectful, dishonorable, and most importantly, it’s illegal.”

(Reuters) - A U.S. startup company is accusing Chinese telecommunications gear provider Huawei of enlisting a Chinese university professor working on a research project to improperly access the startup’s technology, according to court documents filed last week.
California-based CNEX is developing technology to enhance the performance of solid-state drives in data centers and has been in a dispute with Huawei Technologies Co Ltd since 2017. In a new set of counterclaims filed in federal court in Texas last week, CNEX alleged that Bo Mao, a professor at Xiamen University, asked for one of the company’s circuit boards as part of a research project.
The company alleges that it required Mao to sign a “strict non-disclosure obligation” about the circuit board. But CNEX alleged that, unbeknownst to it, the university was working with Huawei and alleged that after it sent the circuit board to the professor, technical details about its products ended up in Huawei’s hands.
“Huawei took CNEX’s proprietary and trade secret information and shared it with the personnel developing Huawei’s (solid-state drive) controllers in violation of representations made to CNEX and restrictions placed on the distribution of CNEX’s technical information,” the startup said in the filing.
Neither Huawei nor Mao returned a request from Reuters for comment.
Huawei’s gear has been largely shut out of the United States since 2012 over security concerns the technology could be used for espionage. The company has said the concerns are unfounded.
The company’s CFO Meng Wanzhou, 47, the daughter of Huawei’s billionaire founder, Ren Zhengfei, was arrested at Vancouver’s airport in December on a U.S. warrant and is fighting extradition on charges that she conspired to defraud global banks about Huawei’s relationship with a company operating in Iran.
CNEX’s allegations last week are the latest in a trial dating to 2017. One of CNEX’s co-founders, Ronnie Huang, had worked for a Huawei subsidiary in Texas but left in 2013 and later helped found CNEX.

The Defense Department is working on a plan now with the Department of Homeland Security that could keep troops at the U.S.-Mexico border for the “next couple years,” a top Pentagon official told Senate lawmakers Wednesday.
Based on Homeland Security’s ability to manage the increasing number of migrants crossing the southern border, Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Senate Appropriations Committee’s defense subpanel that the two departments want to create “a comprehensive plan for the next couple years.”
“Although the commitment to the border hasn’t impacted preparedness for other missions at this point, what we want to do is get into a more predictable mode of the requirements the Department of Homeland Security has and do better at integrating across the government,” Dunford said during the Senate hearing.
Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., the committee’s chairman, opened his questioning during the hearing on the Pentagon’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2020 by asking Dunford and acting Defense Secretary Pat Shanahan for an update on border operations and how much support the Defense Department could provide “without negatively affecting” other missions.
Shanahan outlined the two main areas of DoD support at the border: the 4,364 servicemembers – made of active-duty troops and National Guard members – providing support to U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the building of a border wall overseen by the Army Corps of Engineers.
Shanahan told lawmakers that there’s enough Pentagon contracts and funding from their budgets and other agencies in place to build more than 250 miles of new border fencing. That represents the construction of about 63 miles of border barriers during the next six months at a rate of about half a mile daily.
“We now have on contract sufficient funds to build about 256 miles of barrier,” he said, adding the money comes from the Pentagon, Homeland Security and the Treasury Department.
Of the troops working along the border, Shanahan said the primary task is the monitor and detection mission, which is carried out by about 1,167 servicemembers. Other tasks include logistics support, food service and aviation assets.
Now, about a year since the first request from President Donald Trump for military support at the southern border, Shanahan said there’s been no impact to readiness.
“In some cases, its enhanced readiness because troops get to perform certain functions,” he said.
Hours later, officials from the Department of Homeland Security testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee’s subpanel on border security and immigration describing the Pentagon’s help as a short-term fix to a larger problem.
The more than 460,000 apprehensions in fiscal year 2019 at the southern border have already surpassed the totals of every year since 2009, said Border Patrol Chief Carla L. Provost. Of the people apprehended, 64% are families, which has forced Border Patrol agents to spend nearly half their time providing child care, medical care and food.
While calling on interagency support – such as the Defense Department has provided – can help relieve agents of these tasks and allow them to return to the border and ports of entry, it’s providing “Band-Aid fixes to a worsening situation,” said Manuel Padilla Jr., director of the Department of Homeland Security’s Joint Task Force – West.
Similar to a hurricane, the situation at the border has created “significant humanitarian demands” and has a wide range of effects beyond the point of impact, he said.
“Hurricanes end and recovery can then begin. With a migration crisis, there is no end in sight,” Padilla said. “[It] will continue on until there is fundamental change to our laws.”

The connections date back at least 80 years, to when Jerry Brown’s father, Pat Brown, ran for San Francisco district attorney, losing in 1939 but winning in 1943, with the help of his close friend and Gavin Newsom’s grandfather, businessman William Newsom.
Fast forward two decades. Gov. Pat Brown’s administration developed Squaw Valley for the 1960s winter Olympics and afterward awarded a concession to operate it to William Newsom and his partner, John Pelosi.
One of the Pelosis’ sons, Paul, married Nancy D’Alesandro, who went into politics and has now reclaimed speakership of the House of Representatives. Another Pelosi son married William Newsom’s daughter, Barbara. Until they divorced, that made Nancy Pelosi something like an aunt by marriage to Gavin Newson (Nancy Pelosi’s brother-in-law was Gavin Newsom’s uncle).
The Squaw Valley concession was controversial at the time and created something of a rupture between the two old friends.
William Newsom wanted to make significant improvements to the ski complex, including a convention center, but Brown’s Department of Parks and Recreation balked. Newsom and his son, an attorney also named William, held a series of contentious meetings with officials over the issue.
An eight-page memo about those 1966 meetings from the department’s director, Fred Jones, buried in the Pat Brown archives, describes the Newsoms as being embittered and the senior Newsom threatening to “hurt the governor politically” as Brown ran for a third term that year against Ronald Reagan.
Pat Brown’s bid for a third term failed, and the Reagan administration later bought out the Newsom concession. But the Brown-Newsom connection continued as Brown’s son, Jerry, reclaimed the governorship in 1974. He appointed the younger William Newsom, a personal friend and Gavin’s father, to a Placer County judgeship in 1975 and three years later to the state Court of Appeal.
Justice Newsom, who died a few weeks ago, had been an attorney for oil magnate J. Paul Getty, most famously delivering $3 million to Italian kidnapers of Getty’s grandson in 1973. While serving on the appellate bench in the 1980s, he helped Getty’s son, Gordon, secure a change in state trust law that allowed him to claim his share of a multi-heir trust.
After Newsom retired from the bench in 1995, he became administrator of Gordon Getty’s own trust, telling one interviewer, “I make my living working for Gordon Getty.” The trust provided seed money for the PlumpJack chain of restaurants and wine shops that Newson’s son, Gavin, and Gordon Getty’s son, Billy, developed, the first being in a Squaw Valley hotel.
Gavin Newsom had been informally adopted by the Gettys after his parents divorced, returning a similar favor that the Newsom family had done for a young Gordon Getty many years earlier. Newsom’s PlumpJack business (named for an opera that Gordon Getty wrote) led to a career in San Francisco politics, a stint as mayor, the lieutenant governorship and now to the governorship, succeeding his father’s old friend.

What was decided was everyone who had a girl in their possession could keep them in place but could never let them go. They were dumped beneath the foundation of an addition to the annex which was built several miles from the original annex.

Discovered in the late 1800s, they have been used for over a hundred years in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, successfully treating a whole variety of bacterial infections, including dysentery, tuberculosis, salmonella, E. coli, and staph.
In one Polish paper, where antibiotics were ineffective for almost all 550 patients, phage therapy actually worked for over 90 percent.
Carnell-Holdaway's mother wanted to know if something similar could be done for her daughter, but in the UK, the experimental treatment remains controversial and understudied.
Apart from the success of antibiotics, one of the reasons the West has largely ignored these hopeful results is that many studies, including the one mentioned above, do not include control groups. The research also tends to be written in languages other than English.
"Isabelle's parents knew we were trying to work on this phage therapy, so when the time came that we had no other conventional therapies to use and ongoing signs of infection – they were desperate for other options," senior author and physician Helen Spencer told The Independent.
There was every reason to try, especially since doctors in San Diego had recently used phages to successfully treat a human multidrug-resistant bacterium called Acinetobacter baumannii.
The University of Pittsburgh is home to the world's largest collection of bacteriophages, so it seemed like a good place to start. The curator of this 15,000-vial collection, microbiologist Graham Hatfull, was nervous but more than happy to oblige. And so, his team spent months looking for the perfect phages to take on Carnell-Holdaway's infection.
Whittling through the contenders, Hatfull landed on three viruses in particular. One virus, named "Muddy" came from a rotting eggplant and so it was a natural born killer. The other two, named ZoeJ and BPs, needed a little more encouragement.
In fact, this sleepy behaviour is one of the issues holding phage therapy back. Many of these viruses just aren't lethal enough to be effective as treatments, and when their range is so specific, they become all but useless.
"I had a sense that this collection was enormously powerful for addressing all sorts of questions in biology," Hatfull says. "But we didn't think we'd ever get to a point of using these phages therapeutically."
The key might be a bit of genetic tweaking. In this case, ZoeJ and Bps had one gene removed in particular, which makes them curl up and go to sleep once they enter a bacterial cell. Without this peaceful burden, the phages were no longer so merciful, replicating repeatedly until their offspring finally burst from the host cell and destroyed it.
"Antibiotics are very effective, but they're a blunt instrument," Hatfull told The Independent.
"With phages it's the opposite end of the spectrum. They're very specific, it's a targeted strike, you're not going to affect the rest of the microbiome and they're low toxicity, because they don't infect human cells."
After purifying the phages, safety-testing them and mixing them up to create a stronger front, the new medicine was ready. In June of 2018, Carnell-Holdaway was given an IV twice daily of this viral cocktail, containing a billion phage particles in every dose.
Six weeks later, the infection had all but disappeared from her liver, and today, only one or two skin nodules remain.

The second investigation was reopened on the pretext that the FBI had received new information that came from Anthony Weiner's laptop. Rebecca Parker Mankey, the Palo Alto activist who lost her job after confronting a man in a Make America Great Again hat at Starbucks, has also resigned from a city-led citizens group that weighs in on the redevelopment of her neighborhood.
Mankey, 46, was appointed to the working group of the North Ventura Coordinated Area Plan before it launched in June. She hasn’t returned the Post’s requests for comment. She resigned from the group in an email on April 4, three days after she lit into the 74-year-old Palo Alto man named Victor over his MAGA cap.
“Effectively immediately I resign my position on the North Ventura Coordinated Area Plan Working Group,” Mankey wrote in an email to Senior Planner Elena Lee. “Thank you so much for everything. I have learned a lot from the process.”

Waldek Kaczmarski, an architect who was an alternate on the committee, has replaced Mankey in the group.
