Venezuela: Soldiers Free Leopoldo López, Guaido Declares Military Removal of Socialists

Venezuelan President Juan Guaidó announced early Tuesday morning that he had finally secured the backing of the nation’s armed forces, who would proceed to remove dictator Nicolás Maduro and allow Guaidó to exercise the powers of his office.

Guaidó appeared in images on Twitter alongside Leopoldo López, the head of his socialist Popular Will party, at the La Carlota Airbase, where he claimed the soldiers had agreed to his status as legitimate commander-in-chief. López has been under house arrest since being accused of “terrorism” for organizing peaceful protests against dictator Nicolás Maduro in 2014.

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire to invest $10-billion in Occidental for Anadarko buy

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc will put $10 billion behind Occidental Petroleum Corp’s bid as it tries to see off competition from Chevron Corp to buy smaller rival Anadarko Petroleum Corp.

Occidental and Chevron Corp are locked in the biggest oil-industry takeover in years as they eye Anadarko’s prized assets in West Texas’ huge Permian shale oil field.

Anadarko on Monday agreed to start negotiations with Occidental on its $38 billion cash-and-stock bid, compared with Chevron’s offer of $33 billion.

Analysts said Buffett’s seal of approval supports Occidental’s push to get the deal done but comes at a high cost.

Berkshire’s preferred stock will accrue dividends at 8 per cent per annum, compared with about 5 per cent yield on common equity and 4 per cent on term debt, Tudor Pickering Holt analyst Matthew Portillo said.

Berkshire Hathaway will get 100,000 preferred shares and a warrant to purchase up to 80 million shares of Occidental at $62.50 apiece in a private offering.

“For Occidental shareholder, our view is this is a fairly expensive cost of financing for the transaction even though it carries a kind of nice headline of having Berkshire Hathaway participate in the potential financing here.”

Shares of Occidental were down 3.9 per cent at $57.76, while those in Anadarko were down about 1.6 per cent at $71.71. Chevron shares were up 3.5 per cent at $121.81.

Under the terms of the merger agreement, Chevron has four days after being notified by Anadarko’s board to respond with a counter-offer. If Anadarko proceeds with a sale to Occidental, it will have to pay Chevron a $1 billion deal breakup fee.

Occidental and Chevron, two of the largest oil and gas producers in the Permian by production volumes, argue they can best squeeze more oil from Anadarko’s 240,000 acres in the area.

The two companies control land adjacent to Anadarko’s properties and expect a deal will add deposits that can produce supplies for decades using low-cost drilling techniques.

Berkshire’s backing for Occidental’s bid comes after analysts’ and investors widely perceived Anadarko’s return to negotiation as a breakthrough in Occidental Chief Executive Vicki Hollub’s two-year effort to buy the company.

Berkshire’s investment is contingent upon Occidental entering into a deal with Anadarko and completing the proposed acquisition.

Stacey Abrams said Tuesday that she won’t run for the U.S. Senate in 2020 but left open the possibility she could launch a presidential campaign.

After 10 days of legal wrangling and vote-counting, Abrams ended her campaign but refused to call it a concession.

Her profile has only grown after that election as she’s traveled across the nation on a book tour. She’s hit the late-night talk show circuit, attracted sold-out crowds from Nashville to Seattle and drawn huge audiences to podcast tapings.

Closer to home, she’s trekked across Georgia on a “thank-you tour” to reconnect with supporters; appeared on local Super Bowl ads to boost her Fair Fight voting rights group, which is challenging state electoral policies in court; and sharply criticized the anti-abortion “heartbeat” measure backed by Kemp.

While her national image has soared, an Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll showed Abrams’ favorability ratings in Georgia have dipped. The poll, released in April, showed about 45% of Georgia voters view her favorably, compared with 52% in January. Her unfavorable rating jumped 5 percentage points to 45%.

The parliamentary elections on Sunday resulted in the governing Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez receiving most of the votes but leaves the country in a political void as he will have difficulties in forming a majority government with other parties.

The Socialists received about 29 % of the votes, an increase by 6 % compared to the previous elections in 2016, and in total 123 of the 350 seats in the lower house of the Spanish parliament (Congress of Deputies). Voter turnout was high and reached 76 %.

Sánchez’ minority government, supported by other parties, came into power in June 2018 after a vote of no confidence in Mariano Rajoy’s centre-right People’s Party (PP).

PP lost about half of its seats and received only 17 % of the votes (66 seats), followed by the centre-right Citizens Party (57 seats), the united far-left Unidas Polemos (42 seats), the far-right VOX (24 seats), Catalonian parties (together 22 seats) and Basque parties (10 seats).

Asked to comment on the election results, the chief spokesperson of the European Commission said at a press briefing in Brussels yesterday (29 April) that the Commission is confident that Sánchez will be able to form a stable government.

He added that Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker had called Sánchez to congratulate him on his “clear victory”. As the “vast majority” of Spanish voters had voted for pro-European parties he did not see any danger in the support for VOX that for the first time entered the parliament.

Sweden: Radical left-wing extremist charged over illegal arsenal of semi-automatic rifles

An individual from the far-left extremist landscape in Sweden has been charged with possession of illegal weapons after the authorities found a cache of semi-automatic rifles and police uniforms in a rented storage unit.

The 32-year-old, whose name has yet to be released by authorities, originally comes from the small town of Gislaved, and faces prosecution on severe weapons offense charges according to prosecutors who mentioned the considerable number of semi-automatic rifle parts that were discovered in the storage unit, Sveriges Radio reported.

Petra Schöniger, the lead prosecutor in charge of the investigation had the following to say about the charges: “The investigation shows that the operational weapon of the AR-15 type has been assembled and completed inside the container and that it has subsequently been fired. Other parts of the same rifle type found could have been assembled into four fully operational weapons.”

When the weapons were discovered during the summer of 2018, police initially believed that they were somehow linked to organized crime groups since police uniforms and other disguises were found alongside the weapons. But soon after, a teacher and another man – both with links to radical far-left extremism – were arrested in connection to the cache of weapons.

Since the initial discovery, more stockpiles of weapons were also found between cities of Jönköping and Huskvarna, including an arsenal stumbled upon by orienteers last fall which contained weapons parts and cartridges that matched the kind of assault rifles that were found in the storage unit.

Thus far, no official theory has been put forward by the prosecution as far as what the rifles were going to be used for. However, Prosecutor Schöniger has confirmed that the investigation has revealed concrete ties between the defendant and the far-left scene in the country. When commenting on the case, Schöniger noted, “the crime should be judged as extremely serious.”

In recent years, the threat of violent far-left extremism has increased considerably across a number of European countries – especially in Germany.

Last year, it was revealed by Germany’s domestic intelligence agency BfV that between 2012 and 2017, violent crimes linked to leftist extremism had increased by 88 percent, according to a report by the AP News in Germany

Boeing Changes Its Story, Admits 'Software Glitch' Disabled Critical Alerts On 737 MAX

In a clarification that only created more confusion, Boeing said Monday that an alert intended to notify pilots when the plane might be receiving erroneous data from one of the 737 MAX 8's 'angle of attack' sensors wasn't disabled intentionally, as WSJ reported on Sunday, but that the feature had been disabled because of a previously undisclosed software glitch.

What's confusing is that Boeing had confirmed WSJ's story that the aerospace company had neglected to tell the FAA and Southwest, the biggest customer for the 737 MAX 8, that the alert feature had been disabled because it had been made a new 'optional' safety feature. The alerts would have warned pilots that the plane's MCAS system might be about to misfire.

FBI Report: Antifa Wanted To Stage An ‘Armed Rebellion’ At The Border

The FBI is investigating the violent anti-fascist group “Antifa” for alleged plans to stage an ‘armed rebellion’ at the U.S. Mexico border, according to a report from The Daily Caller.

An FBI document dated December 2018 obtained by The San Diego Union-Tribune lays out Antifa’s plans to purchase guns from a “Mexico-based cartel associate known as Cobra Commander.” Cobra Commander was identified as Ivan Reibeling. Reibeling and Evan Duke, individuals both named in the FBI report, deny the accusations.

“It doesn’t make any sense that someone from the United States would purchase guns in Mexico. And the Hondurans certainly didn’t bring money to buy guns. It doesn’t make any sense; in fact it’s extremely absurd to say the Hondurans wanted to attack the United States at the border,” Reibeling told the paper.

According to the paper, the FBI is working with both U.S. and Mexican law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation. Moreover, the report has been distributed as a “priority” document to the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Drug Enforcement Agency, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Administration, and other relevant agencies.

The FBI document was provided to the paper. It hasn’t been made publicly available because it’s been labeled “Law enforcement sensitive”.
