The secretive legal proceedings were closed to the media until the day of the verdict, when a judge allowed journalists into the courtroom to hear him sentence the defendants, without ever explaining the nature of their crimes.
Despite the clandestinity of the military court’s charges, speculation has swirled that the case against both men is linked to the notorious hack of the 2016 U.S. election. The prevailing narrative in Russian media is that the defendants leaked information about the hacking of Democratic National Committee (DNC) servers to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), drawing the Kremlin’s ire.
Adding credibility to this claim is Ivan Pavlov, previously a lawyer for a defendant arrested in the same case as Mikhailov and Stoyanov. Pavlov told CNN that both men were involved in a two-year-long campaign of treason “on behalf of the United States.”
Moreover, an “informed source” told Russian news outlet Interfax that the “defendants transferred confidential information to U.S. intelligence services – in particular, the CIA, leading a ‘double game’ and disguising their contacts with foreigners as pseudo-recruiting activities.”
Additionally, Russian newspaper Kommersant reported unverified claims that the defendants received as much as $10 million for sharing government documents with American security services.
While their exact crimes remain unclear, what remains certain is that both men were arrested in early December 2016, one month after the U.S. general election. In a scene reminiscent of a spy novel, Mikhailov, once the top FSB liaison for Western cybercrime law-enforcement officials, was detained in the middle of an internal meeting with his fellow agents, who threw a black bag over his head and escorted him to jail.
Adding further intrigue to this spy caper is the role a Russian businessman and convicted cybercriminal played in the prosecution of both men. According to ChronoPay chief executive Pavel Vrublevsky, who was previously targeted by Mikhailov in a hacking probe that led to his conviction and imprisonment in a Russian penal colony for one-and-a-half years, the case against both cybersecurity officials stems from allegations he made in 2010.
Vrublevsky, who testified in court for three hours against the treason suspects, told CCN that in 2010, he prepared a report for Russian authorities that accused Mikhailov of using intermediaries to leak information about his credit-card processing company and other companies allegedly involved in cybercrime to the FBI.
Mikhailov allegedly loaded a CD with confidential data from his probe into Vrublevsky’s ChronoPay, then gave that CD to his FSB subordinate, Dmitry Dokuchaev, who then passed the disk to Stoyanov. Stoyanov allegedly brought the CD with him when he attended Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Consortium conference in Montreal, Canada, where he supposedly slipped the disk to Kimberly Zenz, a former threat analyst for American cybersecurity firm iDefense.
The contents of this clandestine CD allegedly served as the source material for a series of damning iDefense reports that Zenz wrote about the Russian cybercrime ecosystem, with a focus on ChronoPay and Vrublevsky in particular. Vrublevsky has accused Zenz of being an undercover operative for the Central Intelligence Agency.
When approached by CCN, Zenz said she’s “definitely not CIA” and denied ever receiving a CD from Stoyanov. She calls Vrublevsky a significant figure in the world of Russian cybercrime and acknowledges playing “some role in his conviction.”
“He’s been pedaling conspiracy theories about us ever since his arrest,” Zenz said.
In 2013, a Russian court convicted Vrublevsky of hiring a pair of hacker brothers to launch a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack against the payment firm Assist, one of ChronoPay’s competitors. Mikhailov led the DDoS investigation and served as an expert witness against Vrublevsky in the case.

People in central Christchurch have been told to stay indoors after gunmen reportedly opened fire at two mosques in Christchurch.
Multiple eyewitnesses have reported several people have been killed, though officials have not confirmed this.
Reporter Blair Ensor said he saw a man emerge from the Christchurch Mosque on Deans Ave saying "my wife is dead". A man in tears said "they shot kids".

A man in the mosque at the time, who would not give his name, said there were "bodies all over me". He said the gunman came in with an automatic gun and emptied at least two magazines.
Ahmad Al-Mahmoud, 37, described the shooter as white-skinned, blond, quite short and wearing a helmet and a bulletproof vest. He and others broke a window in a door to escape from the mosque. Prayers started at 1.30pm and the gunman came in about 10 minutes later, when everyone was on their knees praying, he said.
The gunman let off dozens, if not hundreds of rounds, he said.

Mitch Redman said the men came out of the building on Aldwins Rd about 2.20pm.
Police carried out two or three children from the building and put them in a car, he said.

One glimpse at the terrifying trajectory of the Ethiopian Airlines jetliner that crashed on Sunday shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa and it is clear something was dreadfully wrong from the start.
As The New York Times notes, controllers also observed that the aircraft, a new Boeing 737 Max 8, was oscillating up and down by hundreds of feet - a sign that something was extraordinarily wrong.
Pilots are reportedly abuzz over publicly available radar data that showed the aircraft had accelerated far beyond what is considered standard practice, for reasons that remain unclear.
“The thing that is most abnormal is the speed,” said John Cox, an aviation safety consultant and former 737 pilot.
“The speed is very high,” said Mr. Cox, a former executive air safety chairman of the Air Line Pilots Association in the United States. “The question is why. The plane accelerates far faster than it should.” -NYT
According to officials with Ethiopian Airlines, the crew of flight 302 told air traffic control they they were experiencing "flight control" problems just a few minutes before contact was lost. Pilot Yared Getachew - who had more than 8,000 hours of flying experience, reported the initial "flight control" problem in a calm voice within one minute of departure.
According to the radar, the aircraft was flying far below the minimum safe altitude recommended during takeoff. Within two minutes, the plane had climbed to a safer altitude, and the pilot reported that he wanted to remain on a straight course to 14,000 feet.
The plane then proceeded to rapidly climb and fall by hundreds of feet while flying unusually fast, according to the Times. Air traffic controllers "started wondering out loud what the flight was doing."
The plane's trajectory was so erratic that two other Ethiopian flights - 613 and 629, where ordered to remain at higher altitudes.

Police are responding to a shooting at at least one mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand. Witnesses say a man entered the building with a rifle and shot several people. There have also been reports of a shooting in a second mosque.
The shooter entered the Masjid Al Noor mosque 10 minutes after prayers began and let off “dozens, if not hundreds of rounds,” witness Ahmad al-Mahmoud told New Zealand outlet Stuff. He described the man as white-skinned, blond, short, and wearing a helmet and bulletproof vest.

I don't have proof of this yet, but bear with me. If this is something you'd be interested in helping me investigate, by all means do!
Here's what I know:
1) In the 90s Intel's chips were nowhere near the best or fastest and there were a ton of competitors who, frankly, were eating their lunch. Intel CPUs were simplistic toys compared to the CPUs being created by SGI, Sun, IBM, HP, and DEC which all ran their own flavors of UNIX. An intel-based system is what you purchased if you couldn't afford anything better. For any of you in the field back then, RISC architectures had some huge advantages and the x86 ISA was just awful to write assembly in compared to its competitors.
2) Fast-forward to 2010: HP's PA-RISC hardware is no longer sold. SGI is out of business. DEC sold their ALPHA designs to Compaq who then buried them by the time they were purchased by HP. At this point the majority of people and business are using Windows PCs. IBM and Sun are still producing their own hardware and OS but their marketshare has shrunk to a tiny fraction of what it was.
3) Fast-forward to today: Sun was purchased by Oracle. Sun's SPARC architecture was buried a few years ago. IBM is the sole non-PC manufacturer left, but almost all of their non-Intel sales are supercomputers to national laboraties and governments and mainframes to banks. PC/Intel machines running Windows and Linux have taken over. 5 once-major operating systems from those manufacturers are either dead or effectively dead.
Microsoft and software/OS
It seems to me that if the CIA wanted to be able to snoop on and control a huge swath of the population, then this would be a reasonable way to do it:
1) Find a couple of small upstart companies (Microsoft and Intel) who are competing with the old behemoths and, in exchange for cooperation, fund and propel them to the point that they are the platform that most people use. Other companies I can think of that rose quickly and prominantly like Microsoft are Facebook and Google (both CIA-backed), and Amazon (still on my list to research). Hmmmm.
2) When a disruptive technology comes along that threatens Windows (and your backdoors) on servers (i.e.: Linux) you take a two-pronged approach: you use identity politics and SJW bullshit to try to take the reins of the development of Linux (Linus was finally forced out last year because of his "noninclusive" approach), but more importantly, you move your focus to owning the system underneath the OS.
Intel and hardware/firmware
How do you own the system? That's where Intel comes in. I need to do more research, but from what I'm seeing, there have been major exploitable vulnerabilities in Intel's systems at pretty much any given point in time since the 1990s.

First, they did away with the BIOS (which admittedly was pretty awful) and replaced it with UEFI–a very complex and often poorly implemented layer that has its own drivers, network stack, etc. It has it's own operating system, and all of this runs at "ring -2" on the CPU so your software and OS (ring 0), and even your hypervisor (ring -1), can't see it but it has full access to everything in the system, including active memory.

James Shaw, New Zealand’s climate change minister and Green Party co-leader, was punched in the face while on his way to parliament Thursday.

The suspect is the son of a wealthy family with ties to Dianne Feinstein, the Senate Judiciary Committee’s top Democrat. Republicans suggested she timed a leak about sexual assault allegations against Kavanaugh to harm his confirmation chances.
The court barred the media from hearing details about the alleged breach, and now a plea deal that could prevent the truth from ever emerging appears to be in the works.
A former Senate aide charged with doxxing Republican senators and extorting a witness comes from an elite family with ties to Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee.
Prosecutors signaled Tuesday that they might give the aide, Jackson Cosko, a plea deal that would prevent the facts of the case from ever being learned publicly.
During Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s September 2018 confirmation hearing, Cosko — a former IT aide who once managed Democratic New Hampshire Sen. Maggie Hassan’s office computer accounts — allegedly posted to Wikipedia the home addresses of Republican senators who supported the Supreme Court justice.
“I own EVERYTHING,” Cosko told a Hassan aide who caught him in the act, according to prosecutors. “If you tell anyone I will leak it all. Emails signal conversations gmails.”
Information revealed in court since then suggested that might not have been a bluff. U.S. District Judge Thomas Hogan on Jan. 24 said Cosko allegedly possessed terabytes of information, including Senate data so sensitive that it could not be discussed in open court.
“He downloaded more information than was originally understood. There is no combination of conditions that could ensure the safety of the community,” Hogan said in December 2018.
Prosecutors underscored that he was a flight risk and that they had concerns he would engage in obstruction of justice.

Conclusions
So where does that leave us?
1) Regardless of what OS you run or what your security practices are, you CAN BE OWNED and your data can be accessed. Avoiding Windows simply won't help you.
2) Encryption doesn't help you if your system has been owned at a lower level. software stores information unencrypted in memory and that memory can be read by the lower levels (UEFI, ME, MINIX)
3) You can't buy a computer that isn't very exploitable by someone with the sophistication to do it. All of Intel's non-x86 competitors have been driven out of business.
4) These embedded layers have full access to the networking system and can inspect any packets going in/out of the computer before the OS can even see it. And those packets can be modified before the OS gets them. And they can be blocked. Literally, these deep layers of the firmware could render the machine completely unable to communicate with system devices if they wanted to.
5) Intel has a history of cooperating with DARPA, who helped Facebook and Google take off and allow monitoring of a huge population.
Questions
1) Computers are very complex systems, so aren't these flaws expected? Any one of these issues in isolation is understandable and to be expected, but all of them together? That's enough to make me suspicious.
2) Didn't all of Intel/Microsoft's competitors go out of business because they just couldn't compete? That's the official story. Maybe it's true, but maybe it's not. The CIA or other organizations would definitely have a vested interest in having the majority of computers use one architecture and OS… sure makes exploitation and hacking a lot easier.
3) Are you saying that intel creates the backdoors on purpose? Maybe? Maybe not. Maybe the CIA get a big head-start once these exploits are discovered by the Intel engineers. Maybe Intel waits longer than one would expect to correct these issues? Maybe I've gone completely off the deep end? I dunno.
4) Cui bono? Any organization who values being able to surveil and collect data from the population at large would benefit hugely from this.
Bonus Thoughts
1) Much of our military and military assets/hardware rely not only on intel-based systems, but also intel-based embedded system boards. Our modern military relies on technological superiority and complex internetworking between systems. The implications there are pretty terrifying.
2) Many of our modern cars, airplanes, and other essential devices use intel embedded hardware.
I have a lot more questions than answers, but this seems worth investigating to me.

Former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik told Breitbart News that FBI agents are “scared to death” to criticize political corruption and abuses of power at the bureau and broader Department of Justice (DOJ).
Kirk offered his analysis on Wednesday’s edition of SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Tonight in an interview with hosts Rebecca Mansour and Joel Pollak.
Kerik reflected on partisan and political corruption at the FBI and DOJ: “Not one of these people has been brought up on criminal charges, or even ethical charges. McCabe was terminated. Comey was fired. Page is gone. But at the end of the day, there are Americans all over this country that would be sitting in prison right now if they made the same decisions, if they violated the law the way these people did.”
Kerik continued, “I’ve been targeted by this government. I’ve seen what they can do and why they do it, and when I see this it sickens me, because it impugns the integrity of the FBI and the Justice Department. It impugns the integrity and honesty of the line agents that are in the field who every day put their lives on the line, and it also sends a message to the American people: There is a two-tier system of criminal justice in this country; one for the normal people and one for them, and that they can do anything they want. They’re basically above the law. Because they violated the law, they violated ethics rules, and they violated DOJ and FBI department policy, and nothing happened to them. I think it’s disgusting.”
Kerik went on, “Until the attorney general takes some real action, one in holding them accountable and then going back to look at Hillary Clinton and that entire debacle of the breach of security with the emails, the destruction of evidence, obstruction, [and] conspiracy. Until the attorney general goes back to investigate and prosecute those crimes, there isn’t an American in this country that will ever believe the FBI or the Justice Department again.”
Mansour asked, “Where are all the whistleblowers? Why aren’t there more whistleblowers out of FBI headquarters?”
Kerik described widespread fear among FBI agents preventing pushback against partisan and political corruption:
You know why? I’ll tell you why. Because they’re scared to death. I know several agents in New York City that are assigned to the FBI, that work for the FBI, based out of New York, and they have told me personally they don’t even mention this investigation. They don’t mention Trump. They don’t mention the president by name. They’re scared to death, because they’re afraid of losing their jobs or they’re afraid of being targeted by the administration.
So if that’s the case, if that’s what’s going on, that in itself is frightening, but I think it’s time that the attorney general takes some decisive action and puts this in its proper place and gets an investigation conducted, and holds the people accountable that violated their own ethics rules, department policies, and the criminal code.
“I find it frightening that there doesn’t appear to be any accountability coming,” lamented Kerik. “I hope this is something the new attorney general is looking at [and] is going to address, because if he doesn’t, there isn’t a courtroom in this country that’s going to have a defendant in it and a defense attorney standing before a judge that doesn’t have real questions about the ethical conduct and the background of the agents at the FBI and DOJ.”

The narrative of “collusion” between President Donald Trump and the Russian state was manufactured by “the swamp” in order to protect the powers of its people, said Jarrett.

The swamp, which had been in control the last eight years under the Obama administration, viewed Trump as a threat. He threatened to drain the swamp and the swamp didn’t want to be drained. The purpose of the Robert Mueller-led investigation, said Jarrett, was to undermine the Trump administration. He also noted the Department of Justice and FBI’s political protection of the Clintons:

If he presents evidence to a federal grand jury, I suspect there’s a very good chance that people would be indicted.
Mansour warned of growing distance between the governors and the governed via increasing centralization of power within the bureaucracy. “Every American’s worst fear — especially every American who believes in limited government — their worst fear is that some faceless bureaucrat in D.C. is basically overturning the will of the people,” she said.
Jarrett replied, “I always hesitate to use what’s become a pejorative term: the deep state, but frankly, I can think of no better alternative. You’re right. Many of these people are unelected officials, but they have tremendous power. Power in Washington is like crack cocaine. It’s highly addictive. If you see anything that’s a threat to that power, you’ll turn heaven and earth to try to hang on to it and do what you can; abuse your authority, misuse the law in order to perpetuate your own power, and that’s what happened here. Facts were invented or exaggerated. The law enforcers became the law breakers. It was a conspicuous abuse of power.”
Jarrett concluded, “I hate to say it … this gives Americans pause that they should be afraid of their government. When people in power will abuse it for political reasons of personal animus, that’s not justice at the Department of Justice.”

Kirk offered his analysis on Wednesday’s edition of SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Tonight in an interview with hosts Rebecca Mansour and Joel Pollak.
Kerik reflected on partisan and political corruption at the FBI and DOJ: “Not one of these people has been brought up on criminal charges, or even ethical charges. McCabe was terminated. Comey was fired. Page is gone. But at the end of the day, there are Americans all over this country that would be sitting in prison right now if they made the same decisions, if they violated the law the way these people did.”
LISTEN:
Kerik continued, “I’ve been targeted by this government. I’ve seen what they can do and why they do it, and when I see this it sickens me, because it impugns the integrity of the FBI and the Justice Department. It impugns the integrity and honesty of the line agents that are in the field who every day put their lives on the line, and it also sends a message to the American people: There is a two-tier system of criminal justice in this country; one for the normal people and one for them, and that they can do anything they want. They’re basically above the law. Because they violated the law, they violated ethics rules, and they violated DOJ and FBI department policy, and nothing happened to them. I think it’s disgusting.”
Kerik went on, “Until the attorney general takes some real action, one in holding them accountable and then going back to look at Hillary Clinton and that entire debacle of the breach of security with the emails, the destruction of evidence, obstruction, [and] conspiracy. Until the attorney general goes back to investigate and prosecute those crimes, there isn’t an American in this country that will ever believe the FBI or the Justice Department again.”
Mansour asked, “Where are all the whistleblowers? Why aren’t there more whistleblowers out of FBI headquarters?”
Kerik described widespread fear among FBI agents preventing pushback against partisan and political corruption:
You know why? I’ll tell you why. Because they’re scared to death. I know several agents in New York City that are assigned to the FBI, that work for the FBI, based out of New York, and they have told me personally they don’t even mention this investigation. They don’t mention Trump. They don’t mention the president by name. They’re scared to death, because they’re afraid of losing their jobs or they’re afraid of being targeted by the administration.
So if that’s the case, if that’s what’s going on, that in itself is frightening, but I think it’s time that the attorney general takes some decisive action and puts this in its proper place and gets an investigation conducted, and holds the people accountable that violated their own ethics rules, department policies, and the criminal code.
“I find it frightening that there doesn’t appear to be any accountability coming,” lamented Kerik. “I hope this is something the new attorney general is looking at [and] is going to address, because if he doesn’t, there isn’t a courtroom in this country that’s going to have a defendant in it and a defense attorney standing before a judge that doesn’t have real questions about the ethical conduct and the background of the agents at the FBI and DOJ.”
