Chinese Censorship Company Invests Millions in Reddit

What happens when the front page of the internet is funded by the company that made the Great Firewall in China?

Reddit, the internet forum for communities, posts, and news, is currently fundraising to keep itself afloat, with a $300 million goal. Half of that goal has already been met, thanks to a massive investment of $150 million from Chinese censorship company Tencent. The company is in charge of blocking, blacklisting and preventing internet access to certain groups, sites, and information in China. Ironically, Tencent is responsible for the banning of Reddit in China.

TechCrunch reported that the majority stakeholder for Reddit used to be publisher Conde Nast. The majority stakeholder now is Advance Publishing. But Tencent’s massive investment gives it a boost in its status.

Other tech companies have considered working with the Chinese government in order to create censored products. Google had a plan for a censored search engine, called Project Dragonfly, which caused several employees to protest and quit the project. Google has announced that the company is not currently working with China, but declined to say that it would never work with China.

Tencent is now “literally reinventing censorship in China,” according to Gizmodo. The company works closely with the Chinese government to ensure that the standards for censorship are met.

Tencent also produced a mass messaging app called WeChat, which is monitored and censored by the Chinese government. WeChat has been the basis for many arrests of Chinese citizens because of the statements made on the platform.

Critics ask what took PG&E so long on wildfire safety effort

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Pacific Gas & Electric Corp. is promising to spend more than $2 billion this year to improve wildfire prevention after its equipment was blamed for causing more than 1,500 Northern California wildfires since 2014.

The advocacy group The Utility Reform Network and a lawyer representing hundreds of wildfire victims suing PG&E expressed skepticism Thursday after PG&E submitted its proposed safety plan to regulators. Attorney Frank Pitre says PG&E has historically accepted high risks in its electrical operations.

PG&E says it isn't waiting for regulatory approval and has already begun implementing enhanced safety measures meant to reduce the number of wildfires.

"PG&E fully intends to meet or exceed each of the goals set forth in the plan," company spokesman Jeff Smith said. "We currently have programs up and running throughout our service area designed to perform against the targets listed in the plan."

A New York-based company and the Defense Department have created an artificial intelligence algorithm to be embedded in smartphones that knows the device owner so well it can tell its user by the way they talk, type and even walk.

TWOSENSE.AI has been working with the department to build a software-as-a-service product to replace the common access card, used to verify defense employees’ identities when logging in to the department’s networks, the company said in a release issued Thursday.

Using constant monitoring of the user’s behavior—including how they walk, carry the device, type and navigate on it and even how they commute to work and spend their free time—and the system will automatically and continuously verify the user’s identity, enabling them to seamlessly work on secure networks without having to plug in a card each time.

As the system tracks these metrics, it continuously updates a trust score based on the level of confidence the algorithm has that the correct person is using the device.

The score “is checked to ensure it meets the desired threshold,” Jeremy Corey, chief of the Defense Information Systems Agency’s Cyber Innovation Division, said at the AFCEA Defense Cyber Operations Symposium in May. “This threshold is predetermined by the organization we are piloting our prototype with. This could be configured by the application owner, so long as it is within the authorizing official's accepted level of risk.”

DISA awarded the $2.4 million contract in October through the Army’s other transaction authority, which allows certain agencies to sign contracts for advanced research without abiding by the Federal Acquisition Regulation.

“Both DISA and TWOSENSE.AI believe that continuous authentication is the cornerstone of securing identity,” said Dr. Dawud Gordon, CEO of TWOSENSE.AI. “Behavior-based authentication is invisible to the user, therefore it can be used continuously without creating any extra work.”

Last year, Steve Wallace, a technical director at DISA, told Nextgov the vendor would deliver some 75 prototypes. Once the testing phases are finished, the technology will be embedded in certain smartphones at the manufacturing level before being acquired by the Defense Department, Wallace said.

Wallace declined last year to name the vendor or smartphones being used. However, the announcement Thursday from TWOSENSE.AI notes the project is working through “existing partnerships” between DISA, Qualcomm and Samsung.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology is also working on a similar solution to identity verification for civilian agencies, Nextgov reported in November.

Reclusive Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss — one of the Democrats’ biggest and most secretive donors — is currently under investigation for a 2011 sexual assault, as originally reported in a handwritten complaint by his former employee Jacqueline Long.

The current status of the investigation was confirmed by a Nov. 30, 2017 document obtained by TheDCNF in a case titled State vs. Hansjörg Wyss. The document was from the office of Fredric M. Knapp, the Morris County, N.J., prosecutor.

The document confirmed the receipt of sexual paraphernalia from Long, including a “purple vibrator.” She alleged in the complaint the device was used by Wyss as a weapon during the assault against her.

Separately, John Mills, the Morris Township, N.J., attorney where the alleged assault took place, informed TheDCNF in an email the township could not release any documents concerning the probe because it involved in “an ongoing investigation [that] involves victims’ rights.”

Township authorities are looking into the accusation that Wyss launched a vicious and brutal sexual assault against Long on April 3, 2011, while the two were staying at the Governor Morris Hotel in Morristown, N.J.

The case apparently remained dormant and was never closed. Last fall, Long traveled to Morris Township to meet with local officials in the prosecutor’s office and at the police department, according to her attorney, John F. O’Riordan.

TheDCNF accompanied Long to Morris Township and observed the prosecutor’s office’s request for the new evidence pertaining to the alleged sexual assault.

Wyss has ties to Hillary Clinton, the Clinton Foundation, and John Podesta, Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign chairman. Although he is not as well known as other liberal mega-donor billionaires like George Soros and Tom Steyer, Wyss has given hundreds of millions of dollars to progressive activist groups through his private foundations.

In just 2014 and 2015, the Wyss Foundation reported in its Form 990 filings with the Internal Revenue Service it gave $110 million to progressive activist groups. Question: why if federal law supersedes state law on abortion why are all these states passing a law where doctors would go to jail if killed a baby that was born. Is this all for show to prove how powerful PP is, or is it part of the political strategy to get more concessions or money from the government.
