Established in 1386, Heidelberg’s Ruprecht-Karls-Universität remains one of Germany’s most prestigious universities and will celebrate its 625th anniversary in 2011. It counts an impressive array of national figures amongst its alumni, including the former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl.

2. Heidelberg is home to a hidden amphitheatre

Hidden from view from the town at the top of the surrounding wooded hills, the ‘Thingstätte’ was built in 1935 by the Nazi party and was designed by Heidelberg native Albert Speer.

It was used by the Nazi party during WWII for rallies and solstice festivals. It is now preserved as a monument, but it is still used for many festivals and cultural events throughout the year.

6. Heidelberg escaped bombing in the Second World War

Unlike many German cities, Heidelberg was not destroyed by air raids in World War II and therefore still has original buildings from the later Middle Ages and early Renaissance. It has been suggested that the city escaped substantial bombing because the US Army wanted to use the city as a garrison after the war (there remains a large US base outside the city today).

In fact though, as Heidelberg was neither an industrial centre nor transport hub, there was nothing of particular strategic interest to the Allies, who focused extensively on nearby industrial cities such as Mannheim.

7. The first evidence of human life in Europe was found in Heidelberg

In 1907 a jaw-bone was discovered in a gravel pit in Heidelberg – it is the earliest evidence found of human life in Europe. The ‘Heidelberg Man’ is the name now given to a member of this extinct human species, considered closely related to “Homo erectus”.

Australian Federal Police and Queensland Police have confirmed they are dealing with an "emergency situation" at the international terminal in Brisbane, Australia

A man has been arrested after Brisbane Airport was evacuated due to a "emergency situation" which saw people "running and screaming".

Queensland Police are urging people to stay away but confirmed there had been no injuries to police or members of the public.

"Police are currently conducting clearance searches of the International Terminal," it said in a statement.

Witnesses claim a man was seen with a knife but this has not been confirmed.

Zoe Bickerstaff was sitting a metre away from the man when the drama unfolded near a Red Rooster restaurant in the departures lounge.

She claimed: "He was an older man sitting with a group. I was just across, he got up and had a small knife chasing two younger girls with hijabs.

"They screamed, everyone screaming and the whole place screamed and we ran out.

"He was old and lumbering."

In a statement shortly before 9pm (11am UK time) officials said: "Police have made a declaration under the Public Safety and Preservation Act tonight at Brisbane Airport due an emergency situation.

"The International Airport has been evacuated and trains have currently been stopped.

The Flow and the Stock in the H-1B Field — a Disturbing Development

There is a deeply disturbing development in the H-1B field, one that has been all but hidden for years. And since this is a U.S. immigration policy story it is, as one might expect, convoluted.

The news relates to the concepts of stocks and flows, previously discussed in connection with the illegal alien population .In this case, a single corporation — without an ounce of participation by the government or any notice by the media — managed to increase the national stock of H-1B workers by 7,000 workers in a single year, and did so without tapping into the substantial inward flows of new H-1B aliens.

That firm is Cognizant Technology Solutions, one of the major Indian outsourcing (or staffing) companies. These firms essentially rent tech professionals to other corporations. Back in FY 2015 Cognizant figured out something that, thankfully, its major rivals so far have not.

The breakthrough or disaster (depending on your point of view) is that Cognizant found a way to expand a corporation's H-1B workforce (the stock) that was totally unrelated to the annual issuance (flows) of H-1B approvals.

These initial issuances come in three bunches, two of which are open to Cognizant and other corporations and are covered by ceilings of 20,000 for those potential workers with U.S. graduate degrees and 65,000 for other college grads. In addition to these set-asides, an unlimited number of other H-1Bs are awarded annually to universities, entities linked to universities, and to other non-profit and governmental employers.

Cognizant exploited a loophole in the existing H-1B program. The rule is that the initial visa is for three years, and that it can easily (if not automatically) be extended for another three years. Beyond that, visa extensions are available only to corporations that are in the process of seeking, or have succeeded in obtaining, green card approval for the H-1B worker involved.
