An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a federally mandated paperwork drafted together by a team that includes parents, general education teacher, specialists, and a special education teacher. When the recent LA strike transpired, the district tried to stop sped staff from striking in court. However, the judge ruled in favor of sped staff. There are more than 60,000 children identified with disabilities in the LA school district. The strike would be a significant set back. Families of children with disabilities struggle a lot and need school services for help.

Administrators at school are fearful of sped law and bend over backwards to keep from being sued. Sometimes children who are extremely violent that are not a good fit for public school must be retained. Schools are left with paying for a one-one-one adult to supervise volatile students. Funding is expensive. Children can be misdiagnosed. Especially kids who are from low socio-economic backgrounds or has language barriers are not evaluated accurately.

The same teacher can keep teaching the same class on and on but keep upping their education level until their pay is in six figures. In my state two teachers are assigned a teacher coach which is a full time teacher teaching job- they do not teach students, just “coach” two teachers. These are fluff jobs and they fight for them. The whole system is stacked with “favor” jobs.

When the town/city/burg had hard times, all the other city workers took a no- raise that year/s except for the teachers.

But it does not have to stay that way. This is important to realize. I had a friend who struggled with this, because although she "saw" the bad stuff that was happening, she could quite accept it ("I just can't believe that…."). So she keep re-experiencing the disillusionment over and over. That kept her in Hell. I don't know if she ever got out (I moved).

Try to hang in there, anon. DO accept that the bad stuff is happening. But please realize–if only in your mind initially–that nothing is "100%". If you open to the possibility (and even ask via prayer or just maintaining an openness to truth), you will find your way out of hell. Because experiences will come to you that will show you something beyond the EITHER/OR way of looking at life. There is a way to reconcile and integrate both experiences, if you will seek it out.

I hope this doesn't sound too sanctimonious; it's based on my own journey. In the end, we are all just fellow travelers having experiences from which to learn. I learned to love.

An IEP is reviewed once a year and is many pages long. Every 3 years students are required to be reevaluated which requires more paperwork, a file review, and/or and evaluation. If there's any changes to an IEP or a parent meeting for any reason there's more paperwork. Yes, IEPs can be poorly written and managed. Some students are served well at all. There is a huge shortage in qualified staff.

One important battle for the future of the USA is what is happening in the public school system. Left activist educators like to intimidate with PC and are quick to take leadership positions in school departments. They control how Common Core is taught. Conservatives that are in school have to be extremely careful. It is a war zone. When Common Core came in school districts had to adopt new textbooks that are extremely biased. The kids are being indoctrinated. Libs are establishing many "help groups" at school that are causing racial problems. There are some awful educators out there. I saw one year where a sped teacher was an avid cyclist and worked on his bicycle in class instead of working with kids. It was an embarrassment. Best friend is head of special ed at local high school. She does extremely good things there–with cooperation of others, including the principal–but even she is ready to go. Near retirement age, but that's not the only reason.

Many of her students also go to general ed classes. But because of CC, these classes are getting impossible for special ed students (they're bad enough for general ed students, but for special ed students–it's just one step too far). She still manages to make changes; e.g., one teacher agreed to provide supplemental material to make convoluted concepts clearer.

But this school is unusual. The "downtown" elites tried to fire the principal and parents wouldn't let them. They were forced to reinstate him. Despite everything, strong parent groups can still make a difference. But we really need a change in policy so people like my friend don't have to do everything using "guerrilla warfare."
