CDC Keeping Close Watch on Measles Outbreak in 21 US States
On Tuesday, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that 107 people from 21 states have contracted measles this year between January 1 and July 14.
The states affected by the infectious disease caused by the measles virus include Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and Washington.
According to the CDC, there were 118 cases of measles in 15 states in 2017 and 86 cases in 19 states the year before that. The number of cases in 2018 is likely to exceed the number of cases reported in 2016 and 2017.
In Illinois, only four cases of measles have been reported, which is normal according to the state's Department of Public Health, ABC 7 reported Wednesday.
The last US measles outbreak was in 2015, when 188 people in 24 states and Washington, DC, contracted the disease. The last outbreak likely occurred after a traveler, who allegedly contracted measles overseas, visited an amusement park in California. CDC scientists showed that the virus type in the 2015 outbreak (B3) was identical to the virus that caused a 2014 measles outbreak in the Philippines. The CDC defines an outbreak as "the occurence of more cases of disease than expected in a given area or among a specific group of people over a particular period of time."
Measles, which can develop into pneumonia and cause brain swelling resulting in death, can be prevented with the MMR vaccine.
According to the CDC, the vaccine protects against measles, mumps and rubella.
"CDC recommends children get two doses of MMR vaccine, starting with the first dose at 12 through 15 months of age, and the second dose at four through six years of age. Teens and adults should also be up to date on their MMR vaccination."
"Before the measles vaccination program started in 1963, an estimated 3 to 4 million people got measles each year in the US," the CDC said.
"Since then, widespread use of measles vaccine has led to a greater than 99 percent reduction in measles cases compared with the pre-vaccine era," the CDC added.

While intense media scrutiny has focused on the foundation’s donations and its use of that money – partly because of the wealth of available information on its vast financial intake – less sustained attention has been dedicated to its accomplishments on the ground.
“They are doing nothing for workers,” one Colombian union official told us, with disgust. “I don’t even know what they are doing in this country other than exploiting poverty and extracting money.”
Colombia should be the Clinton Foundation’s best case study. Ground zero for the drug wars of the 1980s and 90s, racked by uneven development and low-intensity conflict for half a century, Colombia has received significant foundation money and attention. Bill and Hillary Clinton have visited the country often and enjoy close relationships with members of Colombia’s ruling party. Colombia has also been home to the vast oil and natural gas holdings of one of the Clinton Foundation’s largest individual donors, Canadian financier Frank Giustra. In short, conditions were right for Colombia to be the shining example of what the Clinton Foundation’s philanthropy can accomplish in the world, and what makes Hillary so proud of its efforts.
The American Media Institute, a nonprofit news service based in Alexandria, Virginia, partnered with Fusion to send us to Colombia to investigate the Clinton Foundation’s impact. We interviewed more than 50 people in Colombia and found ground realities that contrasted, often starkly, with the nonprofit’s claims about its good work.
Many of the Colombian “success stories” touted on the foundation’s website were critical about the foundation’s effect on their lives. Many labor leaders and progressive activists say foundation programs caused environmental harm, displaced indigenous people, and helped concentrate a larger share of Colombia’s energy and mining resources in the hands of Giustra, who was involved in a now-bankrupt oil company that worked closely with the Clinton Foundation and which used the Colombian military and a surveillance program to smash a strike by its workers.
They paint a picture that belies the progressive principles on which the Clintons have based their political dynasty and philanthropy, embodied in the Clinton Foundation’s promotional copy: “Everyone deserves a chance to succeed.”
What’s missing from the press coverage of the Clinton Foundation is a basic question: What do its activities and outcomes reveal about Hillary Clinton’s political values?
Giustra did not respond to Fusion’s requests for comment, but his attorney said in a statement that his client had no control over the oil company in question and divested himself from it by 2009, when the Colombia charitable partnership began; Fusion’s and other outlets’ reporting suggest he retained stakes in the company’s success. The Clinton Foundation said the Clinton-Giustra partnership in Colombia had succeeded for seven years at “empowering individuals through job creation, skills training and education, and entrepreneurship opportunities.”
We interviewed a dozen young women in the foundation’s job-training programs; female business owners who sought help from its programs; workers who toiled for a major foundation donor’s firms; indigenous fishermen who were promised jobs and aid; and union leaders, social-justice activists, shanty-town residents, and progressive lawmakers. Some current and past enrollees said they enjoyed the job training, but had little to show for it. Some alumni told Fusionthey lost money. Others said they were used as props. Plot
Finch (Michael Emerson) calls Carter (Taraji P. Henson), asking her to help Reese (Jim Caviezel). However, she is debriefed by Agent Donnelly (Brennan Brown) on their newest information: they've managed to locate Reese, who is seen escorting a woman in the streets.
A day ago, Reese and Finch receive a new number: Caroline Turing (Amy Acker), a psychologist. Reese begins surveillance on her by posing as a patient. Meanwhile, Fusco (Kevin Chapman) is summoned by HR and meets with councilman Larsson (Wayne Duvall) and Officer Patrick Simmons (Robert John Burke), who state that they will work in a murder for hire. An anonymous client assigned them to kill Turing and Fusco is notified to obstruct any investigation from the NYPD.
Reese gets in contact with Zoe Morgan (Paige Turco), who manages to get him information regarding any threat against Turing. Reese saves Turing from being killed by assailants in the street and takes her to a hotel for safety. His face is detected by the cameras and the FBI conduct an investigation and strike team to catch Reese. The hotel is surrounded by FBI operatives looking for Reese as well as HR members looking for Turing. With the help from Carter (Taraji P. Henson), Reese and Turing manage to evade the corps. While Finch assists in hacking the system, Alicia Corwin (Elizabeth Marvel) breaks into the Library.
Zoe interrogates one of the threats and finds that the person was blackmailed to act as a threat to Turing by an unknown benefactor. Reese manages to get Turing to escape the hotel through a water plant to reach Finch while he holds the HR shooters. Carter and Fusco arrive and help him chase HR in a high speed chase but Reese uses a detonator he hid earlier to explode HR's car. Finch waits for Turing in his car when he is confronted at gunpoint by Corwin, who demands him to shut down the Machine.
Suddenly, Corwin is shot in the head by Turing. Just as Zoe sneaks into Turing's office, her records are getting deleted, discovering that Turing is in fact "Root". Root was the person who hired HR to plan her own murder, which would make her a person of interest, as the real target was Finch. Reese arrives at Finch's location only to find Corwin's corpse. Fusco manages to send evidence to the NYPD about HR, managing the arrest of the mole inside the corp. Reese goes to a public surveillance camera, talking directly to the Machine, asking it to help him find Finch. A payphone rings nearby and Reese answers it

NEW YORK – A former union boss who was once thought of as the king of New York City's jails may be headed to federal prison.
A jury in Manhattan on Wednesday convicted Norman Seabrook, the former head of the union representing guards at the troubled Rikers Island jail complex, of honest services wire fraud and conspiracy.
Seabrook maintains he is innocent of charges he accepted $60,000 in bribes in exchange for investing millions of dollars in union pension money in a risky hedge fund.
For two decades, Seabrook was head of the New York City Correction Officers' Benevolent Association and was a powerful figure in political circles. Some wardens said his control over the jail rivaled their own.
Seabrook was convicted partly on the testimony of the man who persuaded him to invest in the hedge fund run by Platinum Partners. That witness, Jona Rechnitz, who was also a lavish political donor to Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio, told jurors he talked Seabrook into the investment on a free trip to the Dominican Republic, then later handed off $60,000 in a designer bag.
Defense attorney Paul Shechtman told jurors that Rechnitz was a world-class liar.
"If they had a Nobel Prize in manipulation, Jona Rechnitz would be a recipient," Shechtman said. "You can fault Norman Seabrook for falling for Jona Rechnitz's act."
Assistant U.S. Attorney Martin Bell insisted there were "multiple independent sources," including phone and bank records, to corroborate Rechnitz's story.
Seabrook, 58, was charged in 2016. His first trial ended with a deadlocked jury, and prosecutors put him on trial again. Jury deliberations in his retrial began Tuesday.
Jurors initially delivered a split verdict Wednesday, convicting Seabrook of honest services fraud but telling the judge they were deadlocked on the conspiracy charge. But after further deliberations, they came back with a guilty verdict on the conspiracy count later Wednesday.
Rikers has long been seen as troubled by violence among inmates, excessive force by guards and avoidable prisoner deaths. A Department of Justice investigation found in 2014 that there was a pattern of excessive force and violence that violated the rights of adolescent prisoners. City officials are closing the jail and replacing it with smaller institutions they hope will be more humane.

He said Catholics need to help victims and he asked for Mary's intervention for those whose confidence is shaken because of the "terrible plague" of abuse.
The report says Wuerl, as Pittsburgh's bishop, approved transfers for priests who sexually abused children instead of removing and concealed information when priests were reported to law enforcement.
Wuerl made no mention of the allegations, but has previously said he acted diligently to protect children.
