Nuclear Technologies in Space: From Batteries to Future Rockets
12 October 2026
Nuclear technologies have supported space missions for decades and could play an even greater role in the future.
From compact sources of heat and electricity to high-impulse rocket engines, nuclear energy can provide power that is efficient, reliable and resilient in the harsh conditions of space.
Nuclear technologies already support satellites, deep-space probes, planetary rovers and landers, and space missions involving astronauts in orbit. They may one day help support human and robotic outposts on the moon and beyond.
Why Do We Need Nuclear Technologies in Space?
Solar power is the main energy source for most spacecraft and satellites, but its effectiveness declines with distance from the sun, making solar panels increasingly impractical for missions to the outer solar system and interstellar space.
Distance is not the only limitation: even much closer to our star, sunlight can be completely blocked, as it is in permanently shadowed craters on the moon, or it can be unavailable for extended periods, such as during the moon's two-week-long night or dust storms on Mars.
By contrast, nuclear power sources operate independently of sunlight.
Volume and mass are also constraints. Every gram and every cubic centimetre come at a premium in a vehicle built to leave Earth.
Solar panels need considerable surface area to capture enough sunlight, and the amount of chemical propellant a spacecraft can carry directly determines its range: more propellant extends a mission but also adds mass that makes the initial launch more demanding.
Since nuclear material is extremely energy-dense, it can extend a mission's range without the mass penalty of chemical propellant.
A Brief History of Nuclear Power Uses in Space
The first nuclear power sources used in space were developed in the early 1960s and have been used for deep-space missions ever since.
The two Voyager probes, launched in 1977, are still operating today, nearly 50 years on, powered the entire time by onboard nuclear batteries.
Fission reactors have also flown in space, from the late 1960s until the end of the 1980s. Several dozen low-power fission reactors were launched, each producing a few kilowatts of electricity for missions lasting from several months to a few years.
These devices demonstrated that a controlled fission reaction could operate reliably in orbit. Nuclear rocket engines have their own history. Several were developed and ground-tested in the 1950s and 1960s.
Nuclear technologies for use in space have developed alongside a framework of international oversight.
The need for clear safety standards became evident in the late 1970s, leading to the adoption of the Principles Relevant to the Use of Nuclear Power Sources in Outer Space in 1992, complemented by a joint United Nations-IAEA Safety Framework for Nuclear Power Source Applications in Outer Space adopted in 2009 to guide their responsible use.
What Are Nuclear Batteries and How Do They Work in Space?
In its simplest application, nuclear power in space needs neither a reactor nor a chain reaction. The natural decay of specific radioactive elements releases a steady supply of energy that can support low-power electronics and components.
The released energy can be used directly as heat or converted into electricity. Devices built on this principle are used on deep-space probes, Mars landers and rovers, and small satellites. They were also used during the moon landings.

There are two main ways to harness energy released by radioactive decay. Radioisotope heater units (RHUs) just produce heat and are only used to prevent sensitive instruments from freezing in cold environments such as the surface of Mars or deep space.
Radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs) – often referred to as nuclear batteries – go a step further: they convert heat from radioactive decay into electricity. Their output is modest, typically from a few watts to several hundred watts.
However, they are extraordinarily long-lived and can provide steady power for decades because the radioactive fuel inside them decays so slowly.
Today, different radioisotopes and new designs are producing nuclear batteries that support smaller satellites and other compact applications that were previously impossible due to battery size.
What's Next for Fission Reactors in Space?
Unlike nuclear batteries powered by natural radioactive decay, fission reactors rely on a controlled nuclear chain reaction, which unlocks far more energy than an RTG or RHU.
The new frontier is nuclear microreactors: compact fission reactors designed to deliver anywhere from a few kilowatts up to 100 kilowatts of power for a decade or more. Some early-stage concepts envision outputs reaching several megawatts, although these remain under development. Independent of sunlight or surface conditions, microreactors' continuous energy output makes them strong candidates for supplying power to human or robotic outposts on the moon or Mars: they would enable astronauts to remain on the surface longer and let robotic systems operate with far greater autonomy. Several microreactor concepts have already been designed and ground-tested in recent years.
Learn about microreactors and small modular reactors (SMRs) in this article.
Can Nuclear Power Be Used for Rocket Propulsion?
Today's rockets rely on chemical propulsion: fuel and oxidizer burned together to produce thrust.
Nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP), which uses a fission reactor to heat propellant directly, can deliver specific impulse – how much thrust an engine gets from a given amount of propellant – that is more than twice that of today's baseline chemical rockets.
A related and still developing approach, nuclear electric propulsion (NEP), would power an ion or plasma thruster, extending that capability even further. In short: NTP provides a powerful burst of thrust, while NEP delivers lower thrust over a much longer period.
Nuclear Propulsion – Benefits and Possibilities
Nuclear engines could offer mission planners several advantages over chemical propulsion. They need less propellant, leaving more room on board for payload, supplies or scientific instruments.
They can also accelerate a spacecraft with more thrust, shortening the transit time. Faster transit is safer since it reduces the time astronauts are exposed to cosmic radiation, and it leaves them more time to carry out their mission at destination.
Future missions may combine chemical propulsion for the initial launch and boost, with nuclear power sustaining the journey beyond that.
Looking further ahead, even more powerful means of nuclear propulsion could be developed. Fusion could, in principle, provide energy densities significantly greater than those available from today’s fission systems.
These concepts for fusion propulsion are currently only under development – but they may yet have a role to play in the distant future of space travel.
The energy locked inside the atomic nucleus can be released and used at dramatically different scales to support space exploration, from compact batteries not much bigger than a coin, to reactors for future surface bases, to engines that do not yet exist.
The lessons learned from developing and deploying these nuclear technologies may prove to be valuable not just in space, but back on Earth as well.

Nobel winner Krugman says France may have become ‘too big to save’
PUBLISHED FRI, OCT 9 2026
Jenni Reid
KEY POINTS
• France is on a “fiscally unsustainable path” and may have become “too big to save” for the European Central Bank, economist Paul Krugman wrote this week.
• Former ECB President Jean-Claude Trichet told CNBC that French politicians must find a compromise to restore the country’s credibility with markets — a necessary step if it needs any central bank assistance.
• Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is attempting to pass a divisive 2027 budget, while student protests rock the country.
France faces a potential debt crisis and may have become “too big to save” for the European Central Bank, according to Nobel laureate economist Paul Krugman.
Student protests over underfunding in education continue to rock France, as Prime Minister SébastienLecornu faces a struggle to pass a contentious 2027 budget that seeks to impose tens of billions of dollars’ worth of fiscal consolidation.

UKRAINE
•Pres. Trump announced that his Ukrainian and Russian counterparts had agreed to an energy ceasefire “effective immediately.”
•That seemed to be news to Presidents Zelensky and Putin, though Zelensky said Ukraine would agree to such a deal if Russia did. Ukraine claims that Russia continued to target its energy infrastructure after Trump’s announcement, which would appear to signal a rejection of the proposed truce.
•Russia did, however, agree to a more controversial deal Trump proposed. This one offers Russia temporary and limited sanctions relief so it can sell up to 4.8 million tons of diesel to the U.S. and other foreign buyers in the coming months.
•Zelensky called the diesel deal “an investment in a war that must be ended, not prolonged,” and several of his European backers echoed his criticism.
CHINA
•One of the items on the agenda when European Union (EU) heads of state meet this week will be the bloc’s trade deficit with China, which is currently around €1 billion ($1.1 billion) per day. [Though that headline figure obscures a more nuanced reality that Europe enjoys a vast trade surplus to China in some sectors, like services.]
•France and Germany are leading the drive for tougher measures to close that gap. China has preemptively threatened to retaliate against any new trade restrictions the EU imposes – though it did agree to a deal to sharply reduce its hybrid and plug-in hybrid exports to the EU to deescalate trade tensions.
ETHIOPIA
•In a letter to the UN, Ethiopia said it was facing an “all-out invasion” by Eritrean troops and had been forced to defend against their incursion about 40 miles (65 km) into Tigray.
•Eritrea claims its archrival to the south is looking for an excuse to justify an invasion of its own to capture the Eritrean Red Sea port of Assab.
IRAN AND YEMEN
•The Pentagon used a Friday evening update to revise the number of U.S. casualties from the Iran war up sharply, from 18 killed and 98 wounded as of the previous update in August to 21 killed and 865 wounded as of October 9.
•Given that there was little active fighting in that period, observers are guessing the increase came from broadening the count to include U.S. troops killed or wounded in supporting roles.
•That might be right - but it might be wrong. It’s hard to know for sure, because the Pentagon offered no justification for the nearly ninefold increase in its total casualty tally and ignored media and (partisan) congressional inquiries for an explanation and greater transparency.
•Meanwhile, Iran’s Houthi proxies continued to target Riyadh in revenge for Saudi’s support for the government forces the Houthis are fighting in Yemen. A Houthi strike on the Saudi capital killed 12 on Saturday – the deadliest attack on a Gulf Arab country this year – and another one killed two more yesterday.
•Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, offered to facilitate dialogue between Saudi and the Houthis, but the Saudis will be reluctant to agree to such a partial mediator.

Gunfire Erupts in Sinaloa: Violent Cartel Clash Leaves Six Dead and Three Injured
Culiacán, Mexico—A fierce gunbattle between rival cartel factions erupted on Monday afternoon across a residential neighborhood, leaving six people dead and three innocent bystanders wounded. Heavy automatic gunfire echoed through suburban streets as armed gunmen in armored pickups exchanged fire near major commercial strips. Military forces and federal police units secured the perimeter shortly after the shooting ceased.
Local authorities confirmed six fatalities at the primary battleground, where dozens of spent high-caliber shell casings littered the asphalt. Emergency medical crews rushed three bystanders, including a street vendor and two transit passengers, to nearby public hospitals for severe gunshot injuries. Armed suspects fled the scene in multiple sport utility vehicles before state security convoys arrived.
Shocked neighborhood residents took shelter inside shops and homes while bullets struck building facades, parked sedans, and overhead electrical transformers. Municipal police units cordoned off a four-block radius around the main intersection to preserve forensic evidence and sweep for unexploded ordnance. Power remained cut across several surrounding blocks as utility workers waited for security forces to clear the zone.
"The gunfire went on for fifteen straight minutes without stopping, forcing everyone inside the pharmacy to drop to the floor," said eyewitness Elena Vargas. "When we finally looked outside, cars were burning in the street and people were calling for ambulances."
Forensic investigators spent hours cataloging physical evidence, recovering abandoned tactical gear, ballistic vests, and several modified rifles left in wrecked transport trucks. Police officials noted that two burned-out vehicles blocked emergency response routes, forcing paramedics to navigate secondary dirt roads to reach wounded civilians. State prosecutors initiated formal homicide investigations to identify the primary perpetrators.
State military commanders deployed additional infantry patrols and armored personnel carriers to establish security checkpoints along primary transit routes leaving the municipality. Air units swept low over nearby agricultural fields to search for fleeing gunmen who abandoned disabled vehicles along perimeter roads. Municipal transportation networks suspended bus routes running through the eastern sector until further notice.
Hospitals in the city center operated under heightened security protocols, with armed federal officers stationed at emergency room entrances while surgeons treated injured victims. Hospital administrators confirmed that two injured bystanders remain in critical condition following intensive surgical procedures. Local business associations urged authorities to maintain a permanent security presence across commercial zones.
Federal security officials reported that joint military patrols will conduct targeted search operations across surrounding rural enclaves throughout the evening. Federal law enforcement agencies declined to specify which organized crime syndicates participated in the firefight, citing active intelligence operations.
Forensic personnel continue clearing damaged vehicles and processing physical evidence along the primary thoroughfare where the clash occurred. State security forces maintain active roadblocks along perimeter roads as military helicopters conduct surveillance sweeps across surrounding rural communities tonight
