AOC’s ‘Tax the Rich’ dress designer sued for $1M for stiffing her celeb mega bash event planners
Fashion designer Aurora James — who created AOC’s infamous “Tax the Rich” Met Gala gown — is being sued for $1 million for allegedly stiffing the event planners of her celebrity mega bash, The Post can reveal.
In February, James hosted the “15 Percent Pledge Gala 2026″ in Los Angeles with the aim of raising cash for black business owners. Meghan Markle was in attendance, while Beyoncé’s mom Tina Knowles was honored at the event.
However, in court papers seen by The Post, party organizers The Gathery insist they are owed hundreds of thousands of dollars. Their lawsuit claims that a “fraudulent” James “repeatedly induced” them to continue working, “all while knowing, or recklessly disregarding, that 15PP lacked the ability to pay.”
The Gathery has filed a civil lawsuit in New York Supreme Court against James, 15 Percent Pledge, and its fiscal sponsor, Philanthropic Ventures Foundation (PVF).
The complaint alleges that The Gathery produced the 2026 gala, advanced substantial vendor and production costs, and was left with $777,871.84 in unpaid principal, plus contractually owed interest, attorneys’ fees, and other claimed financial damages.
The suit seeks $1,082,965.28 from James, Fifteen Percent Pledge and PVF.
James, 42, founded the non-profit organization in June 2020 following the murder of George Floyd. It challenges retailers to dedicate 15% of their shelf space to black-owned entrepreneurs and creatives.
Her clothes have been worn by everyone from Beyoncé and her sister, Solange Knowles, to Markle and Nicki Minaj. But it was AOC who got her on the front pages back in 2021 when she donned the white gown emblazoned with ‘Tax The Rich’ to the Met Gala.
This is not the first time that James — who owns a $1.6 million LA cottage that has been featured in Architectural Digest — has landed in hot water.

Four American tourists were among six people killed after a powerful explosion destroyed a residential building near Athens’ famed Acropolis, according to Greek officials.
The four Americans — two men and two women who were believed to be traveling as two couples — were staying in the two-story building in the historic Plaka neighborhood when the blast occurred Friday.
The district sits at the foot of the Acropolis and is surrounded by some of the Greek capital’s most popular tourist attractions.

Obviously, this all came from an internal memo, though I fully expect those to always find their way into the public domain.
In any case, I imagine the non-space media may not fully appreciate this, but for an Artemis III mission that did not really exist six months ago, with hardware coming together quickly in the VAB, test landers in production, the crew assigned and in training, and the most complex multi-launch campaign mission in history only 90 days broken to schedule, I thought the update would come across as confidence inspiring.
There are opportunities to pull in the schedule and, of course, risks ahead, but those who know these programs should generally be very encouraged by the progress. I am incredibly proud of the NASA team and our partners.
We intend to provide an Artemis update, similar to the Moon Base updates, in early October.

I do enjoy engaging with some of the naysayers, not to blow up your feed, but in the respectful hope it helps others see a slightly different perspective.
So your theory is that we created Artemis III to cover for the HLS landers being behind schedule. What I would tell you is that even if the landers were fully ready to go, I would not change a thing.
I would still insist on Artemis III as a LEO rendezvous mission because it makes little sense to jump from a lunar flyby straight to a landing.
It is imperative that we rebuild muscle memory with SLS and Orion and retire as much lander risk as close to Earth before committing NASA astronauts to the lunar surface.
Do you know why you do not hear current or former NASA astronauts or engineers saying Artemis III mission is a bad idea? Because NASA wanted a LEO mission like this for many years.
My job is not disruption for the sake of disruption, its actually much more about dusting off the NASA playbook from decades past. A playbook that worked on July 20th, 1969.
It is giving NASA leadership and the workforce the flexibility to execute the mission the way they know it should be done.
The reality, though, is that acceleration and programmatic change was necessary, as the Inspector General reports make clear.
We have had to do a tremendous amount of work across the architecture, from the core stage and greater Orion component reuse, to phasing in lunar EVA suit capabilities and changing the upper-stage strategy, all with the objective of making a lunar landing, and then repeated landings, affordable and achievable within the necessary timeframes.
Some in your camp seem to view any schedule pressure as a political whim.
But President Reagan called for America to return to the Moon in 1988 in a National Space Policy, and we have had decades to get it done and spent over 100B in the process.
So when exactly is the right political term to achieve the goal? If not now, which decade? And when we finally arrive, will the most valuable landing sites at the lunar South Pole still be available–or will someone else already be there.
