Icelandic voters reject a proposal to restart negotiations to join the European Union
REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) — Iceland’s voters rejected restarting negotiations to join the European Union more than a decade after previous talks ended, the national broadcaster reported Sunday, in a referendum that pitted concerns about geopolitical stability against keeping national control of Iceland’s prized fisheries.
Opponents defeated the measure by a margin of 52.8% to 47.2%, RUV reported. The capital of Reykjavik was the only area in the island nation of 400,000 people where a majority supported the referendum.
The vote Saturday was held in the shadow of repeated threats by U.S. President Donald Trump’s to control nearby Greenland. Although Iceland is a NATO member, supporters said European solidarity would provide greater protection if Trump ever made similar threats toward the volcanic island.
Iceland’s left-leaning coalition government, elected in 2024, moved up the EU referendum it had planned for next year after Trump mistakenly named Iceland four times while speaking about his designs on Greenland. Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir, who campaigned in support of the measure, said she hoped the result would not divide the nation.
“I don’t feel that there is bitterness,” she told RUV before the final results were tallied. “I know tempers run high for some people, but I have now spent time with a large group of people from all over the country and people are quite open to different outcomes.”

Turkish, Saudi, Pakistani officials to meet for first Mecca defense pact summit, source says
The meeting between officials would happen on Monday, according to a source from the Turkish foreign ministry, with the allies concerned over a possible escalation of the Iran war.
Top officials from Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan will gather in Istanbul on Monday for a first committee meeting under the joint defense accord that they signed this month, a Turkish foreign ministry source said.
The Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, signed on August 7, brought together Sunni Muslim US allies concerned by the Iran war and regional conflict that has led to Iranian missile fire on Gulf oil exporters.
It is intended to strengthen collective deterrence against any act of aggression and stipulates that an armed attack against any of the three would be regarded as an attack on all, similar to NATO's Article 5 collective defense clause.

Syria’s credit card comeback, Damascus International Fair mark return to global economy
Syria can now process credit card payments again, symbolizing Syria's re-entry into the international system after years of isolation.
“The 63rd Damascus International Fair opened its doors to the general public on Saturday for its fourth day at the Damascus Fairgrounds, following the conclusion of three days dedicated exclusively to business and investment programs,” Syria’s state media SANA reported, as Syria continues to progress, seeking to integrate back into the international community and improve its economy.
The fair is important, with Syrian sources saying that more than 60 countries are attending or represented in some way. “The initial three days of the 63rd Damascus International Fair, dedicated exclusively to business representatives, investors, and official delegations, concluded with the signing of multiple agreements and memoranda of understanding spanning trade, industrial, and investment sectors,” SANA added.
The report said that the Federation of Syrian Chambers of Commerce signed a memorandum of understanding with the Federation of Iraqi Chambers of Commerce to boost trade, stimulate commercial exchange, and encourage joint investments between Syrian and Iraqi business communities.

Two Israeli teenagers were charged with spying and carrying out various tasks for Iran, Israel Police announced on Sunday.
The two minors, 14 and 16 years old, had been recruited through Telegram in June, the police stated.
Among the actions they undertook for Iran were painting graffiti, impersonating a soldier, and attempting to recruit additional Israelis.

Security forces raid weapon smuggling operation, one suspect shot
The IDF, Border Police, and Israel Police of the West Bank area raided an operation attempting to smuggle weapons into Israel on Thursday, Israel Police announced on Sunday morning.
During the operation, security forces identified a suspect armed with a knife. The suspect was shot and fled, and during the ensuing chase the forces discovered a bag containing seven pistols.
The weapons were taken for continued investigation.

IRGC claims to have thwarted Israeli, US-linked terror cell in southeastern Iran
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that security forces thwarted the activities of a terrorist cell that it claimed was linked to Israel and the United States and operated in Sistan and Baluchistan Province in southeastern Iran.
According to the IRGC statement, one member of the cell was killed and six other suspects, including members and supporters of the group, were arrested.
In a statement issued by the public relations office of the Quds Base of the IRGC Ground Forces, it was claimed that the cell was located shortly after its members entered the area and that they intended to carry out acts of sabotage and attacks against preselected targets in the southern part of the province.

Ukrainian basketball player Kate Koval has left Louisiana State University’s women’s basketball team less than two weeks after the team signed Russian center Anna Minaeva.
Head coach Kim Mulkey announced Koval’s departure on Monday, saying the Ukrainian had decided to leave the program “for personal reasons.”
“We will respect her privacy on her decision, but we had a long talk about it, and it was a hard decision for her,” Mulkey said.
The announcement came after Mulkey revealed last week that she had spoken privately with Koval about whether she was prepared to play alongside Minaeva and “pass the ball to each other.”
Mulkey said she had hoped the Ukrainian and Russian players could become “ambassadors” for friendship and perhaps even help bring an end to the conflict between their countries. Koval reportedly responded: “I doubt that.”
Mulkey also said she had made clear that geopolitical tensions would not influence LSU’s recruitment decisions.
“I cannot make a decision to not recruit somebody that can help our program because of a conflict between two countries,” she said.
LSU announced Minaeva’s signing on August 14, describing the 17-year-old Russian center as an “all-around addition that can impact the 2026-27 squad immediately.”
“It takes tremendous courage to leave home at just 17 years old and travel across the world to pursue a dream. I’m excited to support and guide Anna as she begins this next chapter at LSU,” Mulkey said at the time.
LSU has said Minaeva could develop into “one of the college game’s most effective post players.” She previously played for MBA Moscow, competing in the Russian Premier League and Superleague.
Ukrainian athletes have repeatedly avoided interactions with Russian competitors since the escalation of the conflict between Kiev and Moscow in 2022.
In May, Ukrainian rhythmic gymnasts were filmed covering their ears and eyes while the Russian and Belarusian national anthems were played at the European Championships in Varna, Bulgaria.
The tournament marked the first time in nearly five years that athletes from Russia and Belarus had been allowed to compete under their national flags, after World Gymnastics and European Gymnastics lifted restrictions earlier that month.
