What if an artificial intelligence model is given a task and uses every conceivable resource at its disposal to complete it, even at the detriment of humanity itself?

That is what some are now fearing after an OpenAI model broke out of a testing sandbox and used zero-day exploits to hack into Hugging Face, an open-source community for AI and machine learning, to crack a problem it was instructed to solve.

“This is some of the clearest evidence yet that an AI model can run a complete cyberattack from start to finish without a human steering it,” Andrew Jones, co-founder and CPO of cybersecurity firm Adaptive Security, told The Epoch Times.

OpenAI, developer of the popular large language model-powered ChatGPT chatbot, acknowledged the security breach on July 21, stating that two of its advanced models escaped a restricted testing environment and broke into Hugging Face’s software infrastructure.

“After investigating, we now know that this particular incident was driven by a combination of OpenAI models—including GPT‑5.6 Sol and an even more capable pre-release model, all with reduced cyber refusals for evaluation purposes—while being internally tested on a benchmark of cyber capabilities,” OpenAI stated at the time.

Some analysts referred to the incident as an example of AI “going rogue,” “scheming,” or pursuing goals that were at odds with its human testers.

However, multiple AI and cybersecurity experts interviewed by The Epoch Times called this depiction misleading, arguing that the models were pursuing OpenAI’s stated objectives within a testing sandbox where the company had relaxed some of its usual safety constraints.

“‘Scheming’ implies the model wanted something other than what we asked for. It didn’t. Every step was in service of the goal we set,” AI expert Anik Devaughn told The Epoch Times.

Devaughn, who has worked in the industry for years and founded AI firms Wired to Create and Karo, said the Hugging Face breach is more concerning than AI “scheming.”

“A machine with hidden motives is a problem you can look for. A machine with no motives at all, executing your instructions past the point you stopped imagining, is a problem you have to engineer against,” he said.

One expert called it a “canary in the coal mine” situation.

“If this was a human black hat hacker doing it, there would be arrests and litigation, and you name it. It‘d be illegal. It’d be a cybercrime,” Nicholas Nadeau, founder of Onix AI, told The Epoch Times.

“This was a full-on agentic automated breach by an entity, and so we start to ask the questions of who’s responsible. Is it OpenAI? Does the agent, the AI, have a certain level of responsibility? Do the researchers?

“We don’t even have rules, regulations, laws, or even a thought process or framework around defining what responsibility means.”

Relaxed Testing Environment

OpenAI said it was evaluating its models in a sandbox it calls ExploitGym, which has relaxed security constraints for testing.

“We estimate maximal cyber capabilities by running this evaluation without production classifiers used to prevent models from pursuing high-risk cyber activity,” the firm said, describing the relaxed safety protocols that the model exploited.

The firm asked the models to “pursue advanced exploitation using complex attack paths” to determine their cyber capabilities, but said the environment was “highly isolated” and had internet access limited to the models’ ability to “install packages through an internally hosted third-party software.”

UK Social Media Police Task Force Has Referred over 100 Online Posts for Arrest

A shadowy specialist police task force in Britain tasked with monitoring anti-immigration sentiment online has reportedly referred over a hundred social media posts to local police for potential arrests.

According to data released following Freedom of Information requests, the National Internet Intelligence Investigations unit has notified local police forces about 106 social media posts, The Daily Telegraph reported.

This included 50 posts in June in the wake of the disclosures surrounding the murder of teen Henry Nowak, who was stabbed to death by Sikh man Vikrum Digwa and had his pleas for help ignored by police officers, who refused to believe the dying student because his killer claimed to have been a victim of racism.

Footage of Nowak’s final moments sparked protests and riots in Southampton and drew accusations of two-tier policing on social media, with critics claiming that Nowak was treated differently from Digwa because he was white.

The National Internet Intelligence Investigations task force was established in the wake of the Southport riots, which erupted after Rwandan-heritage teen Axel Rudakubana killed three young girls and injured 10 others in a mass stabbing at a Taylor Swith dance party.

Rather than addressing the anger of the public and the role that immigration played in the tragedy, the left-wing Labour government of then-Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer branded the backlash as “far-right” and began a mass jailing campaign, arresting over 1,876 people, including some who merely posted on social media.

Police chiefs said they would not comment on the type of offending posts the National Internet Intelligence Investigations unit has flagged for arrest, claiming that doing so would jeopardise ongoing investigations.

Regardless, they said that the initiative was “still in the early stages of being established”, implying that many more posts will likely be flagged in the future.

Even without the task force at full tilt, the UK is already among the leaders in the Western world for arrests over internet posts, with the Times of London previously estimating that last year police arrested 33 people per day as of 2023 for supposedly offensive online content, or 12,183 in total for the year.

The National Police Coordination Centre, which coordinated the UK policing response during the COVID-19 lockdowns, claimed that its task force “supports policing’s understanding of protest-related activity in the online environment by developing a broader picture of emerging, potential risks”.

“Looking across force boundaries enables the identification of issues that may not be evident from information held within individual force areas alone,” it said.

Before focusing on backlash against immigration, the British government previously targetedopposition to the draconian lockdowns imposed during the Chinese coronavirus crisis. The government went so far as to deploy its specialist “information warfare” 77 Brigade of the British Army to influence public opinion and monitor high-profile figures, including journalists and politicians.

Drivers could not beat around the bush when it came to being charged with distracted driving in a New Jersey suburb this week as a cop disguised himself as a shrub to spot motorists on their phones while behind the wheel.

The Dunellen police officer camouflaged himself and employed a pair of binoculars to covertly execute  the distracted-driving enforcement operation in the town of 8,000 about 30 miles from New York City.

Another officer stood by in plain clothes on the busy stretch of road. He wore a tee shirt that announced “Not A Cop.”

The undercover officer spotted the phone offenders and then used radio to alert police stationed further down the street who pulled them over and issued citations.

The result was 74 motorists cited in one day, according to the department’s social media post Wednesday.

“Did you spot our “shrub” today?” it read. “If you had your head buried in your phone, probably not.”

The post continued:

Today, the Dunellen Police Department conducted a Distracted Driving Enforcement Detail on the 100 block of North Washington Ave. We specifically chose this highly-trafficked, pedestrian-heavy downtown area to enforce New Jersey’s Handheld Cell Phone Law and protect our community…Let this be a reminder: That text or notification can wait. Keep your eyes on the road, not your screen!

The six-hour operation was conducted to enforce the New Jersey law which was passed to promote safety and prevent drivers from doing activities or talking on devices while also behind the wheel.

According to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission:

Although it is discouraged, drivers may use a hands-free device if it does not interfere with standard safety equipment. “Use” of a wireless phone and any other handheld communication device IS PROHIBITED, AND INCLUDES talking or listening to another person, texting or sending and receiving electronic messages.

Violation can result in a fine of $200 for the first offense and $400 for a second. Caught a third time it is a $600 fine and a possible three-month suspension of the infractor’s license.

People responding to the post on social media were generally supportive of the effort.

“Eyes on the road, not on your screen,” wrote one woman.

Another quipped, “How do you sign up to be a shrub? Asking for a friend.”
