Karim Haggag, director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, said, “The reality is that the region in the aftermath of this conflict will be much more insecure.”

Author Afshon Ostovar says the war only “reinvigorate[d] Iran’s perception of its own security.”

Retired Israeli intelligence officer Danny Citrinowicz said the memorandum of understanding “is a collapse of all the strategy that we had regarding Iran,” ostensibly referencing Israel’s strategy, not that of the United States.

Unnamed analysts also claim that Iran is “working assiduously to restore Hezbollah’s military capacity,” which would violate the agreement.

Trump went off on the Times in response to the report.

Two Montreal police officers were shot early Monday afternoon in the Côte-des-Neiges borough, according to police sources.

The neighborhood was placed under an emergency alert just after 12:30 p.m. Monday due to an “armed and dangerous suspect” in the area, says the Montreal Gazette.

Authorities issued a public warning telling residents in the affected zone to remain inside. “If you are in the affected area, shelter indoors, lock the doors, stay away from windows and follow instructions of local authorities,” the alert said.

Police have not yet released further details on the condition of the officers or the suspect.

Canadian taxpayers would have to pay an extra $1,000 in taxes each year to support Ottawa’s existing spending levels, if it were not for the contributions made by Alberta to the federal budget, a new study suggests.

Alberta’s higher employment rates, elevated average incomes, and younger population mean the province contributes much more to federal revenue and national programs than it receives in transfers and federal expenditures, according to a recently released report from the Fraser Institute.

That means taxpayers in other provinces would need to pay an extra $1,007 each annually on average if it weren’t for Albertan contributions, the study found. Continue…

Canada’s inflation rate rose to 3.2 percent in May, with higher energy prices stemming from the war in Iran again driving the increase, according to Statistics Canada.

The country’s Consumer Price Index (CPI), which was at 2.8 percent in April and 2.4 percent in March, is now higher than the Bank of Canada’s target range of between 1 percent and 3 percent.

Statistics Canada said in its June 22 report that gasoline prices rose at a faster pace in May, increasing by 33.2 percent on a year-over-year basis, compared to 28.6 percent in April. The agency attributed the increase to Iran’s efforts since March to close the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route through which roughly 20 percent of the world’s oil supply passes. Continue…

Industry Minister Mélanie Joly has outlined the conditions Chinese automakers must fulfil to establish a production base in Canada.

Speaking to reporters in Japan on June 22 during the second leg of her Asia trip, Joly said four conditions would need to be met under the Investment Canada Act.

Manitoba Superior Court Chief Justice Glenn Joyal will be the newest member of the Supreme Court, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Monday morning.

Carney made the much-awaited announcement of his first nominee to the Supreme Court (SCC) Monday morning. Joyal will fill the vacancy left behind by Sheilah Martin, who retired from the apex court on May 30.

Joyal is a well-known and well-respected judge who has been the chief justice of the King’s Court of Manitoba since 2011. Before joining the trial court, he sat on the Manitoba Court of Appeal for two years. Continue…

Terrasse-Vaudreuil, a municipality just 40 kilometres west of Montreal, has officially recognized trees as living beings with rights of their own, in what has been described as “a first in Quebec and Canada” by the municipality and the International Observatory of Nature’s Rights.

In a news release published in French on June 10, the Municipality of Terrasse-Vaudreuil said it will adopt a resolution to sign the petition in support of the Universal Declaration of the Rights of Trees.

The citizen-led initiative was inspired by a screening of the film Des arbes et des arts (Trees and the Arts), directed by André Desrochers, which “sparked a broad public debate on the legal status of trees and the possibility of recognizing them as living beings, rather than mere objects.”

Following the discussions, a formal request was submitted to the municipal council through the Terrasse-Vaudreuil Environment Committee, resulting in the adoption of this resolution. Continue…

In a piece in the Toronto Star, Ottawa-based writer Susan Delacourt posits, “How much are we willing to do to keep Alberta around?”

The tone implies exhaustion from Laurentian Canada with all the effort central Canadians must do to keep Albertans from wanting to leave. Just what will it take to make those ungrateful Westerners understand just how good they have it?

She then goes into areas where Canada could seek compromise and offer concessions to calm down those distant malcontents.

None of the things listed should be considered concessions. They are restorations of normal provincial authority that Alberta already possesses under the Canadian Constitution.

No other province must negotiate and battle with Ottawa to develop and export its prime trading goods to world markets. Could you imagine the federal government interfering in in Ontario’s ability to export automotive products? Or British Columbia’s massive coal exports?

Yet she treats Alberta’s quest for a pipeline to the coast as some unreasonable demand could be considered by the central authorities as a concession. Constitutionally, the federal government is supposed to facilitate interprovincial infrastructure, not hinder it. Continue…

The federal government is seeking outside actuarial expertise to review the financial framework behind Canada's Vaccine Injury Assistance Program (VIAP), a compensation program created to provide financial assistance to people who suffer serious and permanent injuries following vaccination with a Health Canada-approved vaccine.

According to a new procurement notice issued by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), the agency is looking for actuarial services to evaluate whether the program's current payment structure is financially sustainable and equitable over the long term.

The tender states that PHAC requires a contractor to "review the financial framework for the Vaccine Injury Assistance Program (VIAP)," assess the "reasonableness and equity of the payment structure," and recommend changes to support the program's long-term sustainability.

The review will examine whether the existing compensation model remains viable as claims continue to be processed. Actuaries are specialists who evaluate financial risk and long-term liabilities, often used by governments and insurance providers to assess the future costs of benefit programs.

The federal government launched the Vaccine Injury Support Program, now the Vaccine Injury Assistance Program, in 2021 amid the mass COVID-19 vaccination campaign.
