Myth Busted: U.S. Much Safer Than Many Peer Nations

Conventional wisdom holds that the United States is the most violent and dangerous nation in the developed world. This dark view is frequently invoked by conservatives to demand stronger penalties for crimes and by progressives to argue for stronger gun laws.

At the same time, other nations point to crime as an Achilles heel of the American system. These include two peer nations with some of the most restrictive gun laws in the world - Australia and Canada. In 2025, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported that "the U.S. generally sees higher violent crime rates than many other countries." Last year, the Canadian Press similarly reported that "the number of police-reported violent crimes for every 100,000 people continue to be higher in the United States than in Canada."

The data, however, undercuts this narrative. While the United States still leads in some categories, on the whole it has significantly less violent crime per capita than those two nations.

Regarding homicide, the most heinous crime of all, it's true that in 2025, the U.S. murder rate was about four per 100,000 people - roughly twice Australia's and Canada's 2024 homicide rate. Yet it's also true that homicides account for only a tiny fraction of violent crime. In 2024, homicides represented just 0.21% of violent crimes in the U.S., based on National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) estimates of rape/sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, and simple assault. Mali Govt Says Al-Qaeda Extremists In Region Receive Training, Drones From Ukraine

The Malian government announced on Thursday that militant groups with links to Al-Qaeda carrying out terror attacks in the country were trained and armed by Ukrainian specialists.

Fousseynou Ouattara, Vice President of the Defense Commission of Mali's Transitional Council, said authorities identified militants who received training in Ukraine to carry out operations using kamikaze drones produced by Kiev. "These young people are known, we have now added them to our lists, and we have their names," Ouattara said.

The militants fighting the Malian government belong to a Tuareg-led separatist group, the Azawad Liberation Front (ALF), and Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimeen (JNIM), an extremist group linked to Al-Qaeda.

He added that the militant groups are receiving fighters from Algeria, Mauritania, and Libya, as well as training from members of the French Foreign Legion and Ukrainian instructors.

France is allegedly supporting the ALF and JNIM following the Malian government's removal of French troops in 2022. In their place, private military contractors from Russia's Wagner Group were deployed.

After a May 2021 coup in Mali, the country's military junta officially demanded that France withdraw its troops "without delay." French troops had been present in Mali for nine years, allegedly to fight the Al-Qaeda-linked insurgency. Continue…

As the high-stakes criminal investigation into Telegram nears its second year with no resolution in sight, French authorities have again summoned Telegram co-founder Pavel Durov for questioning. Durov spent around six hours being questioned at the Paris Judicial Tribunal on Wednesday, local media reported, citing law enforcement sources. He's allowed to travel internationally, and to live at his home in Dubai - though he's agreed specific judicial supervision rules, part of which is to periodically return to France when summoned.

It marked the fourth time the tech entrepreneur has been interrogated as part of the ongoing investigation, stretching back to his initial arrest in August 2024 at a Paris airport. He was soon after indicted on a dozen assorted charges ranging from complicity in illicit platform activity to non-cooperation with state authorities.

Durov’s legal team confirmed the questioning to AFP, slamming the lack of progress by French prosecutors, decrying that "almost two years after the indictment of Pavel Durov, there is still no evidence to establish the validity of the charges." Continue…

A mysterious parasite outbreak that can trigger severe, "explosive" diarrhea is rapidly expanding across the United States, with Michigan emerging as the hardest-hit state after reported cases quadrupled in less than a week.

Michigan health officials reported 681 confirmed cyclosporiasis cases as of Monday, up dramatically from 170 cases just days earlier. The surge comes as federal investigators continue searching for the source of the outbreak, which has now been identified in at least 17 states. The Post Millennial reported last week that the illness is caused by Cyclospora cayetanensis, a microscopic parasite typically spread through contaminated fresh produce or water. Despite the spike in infections, the CDC says investigators have not linked the outbreak to a common food source, complicating efforts to contain it.

New York has reported 120 cases since May 1, while Texas has confirmed 48 infections. Illinois, Virginia, Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Colorado, Ohio, Wisconsin, Georgia, Louisiana, Alaska and Tennessee have also reported cases. The CDC's most recent nationwide update, released in mid-June, documented 145 cases across 17 states, but those figures do not include Michigan's recent surge, suggesting the true national total is now substantially higher. At least 20 people had been hospitalized, though no deaths have been reported.

Symptoms range from mild illness to debilitating gastrointestinal distress. Patients can experience watery diarrhea, severe abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and low-grade fever. Health officials say some of the most severe cases involve frequent bouts of "explosive" diarrhea that can lead to dangerous dehydration, particularly among young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. A vacant church overlooking Pittsburgh's Mount Washington neighborhood was heavily damaged Tuesday evening after a fast-moving three-alarm fire tore through the structure, ultimately causing its roof to collapse as firefighters battled the blaze.

Emergency dispatchers received reports of the fire shortly after 6 pm at the former Grandview United Presbyterian Church on Grandview Avenue. Fire crews arrived within four minutes but encountered an increasingly complex blaze that spread rapidly through the aging building.

Assistant Fire Chief Mathew Davis said the structure itself made the firefighting effort especially difficult. "One of the big things is the size of the structure and the complexity of the structure. So multiple floors, different angles, different walls. Over the years, buildings change, so we were chasing fire throughout the building. As we were finding things, more fire would pop up behind us." The country of Canada has apologized for the system of national parks that it has developed, with the national parks agency saying that the existence of the parks themselves represents "colonial injustice" against those who are Indigenous.

The internal report known as the Evaluation of the Indigenous Guardians Initiative Internal Review, stated, “For millennia Indigenous people have cultivated reciprocal relationships with land, water and ice guided by cultural practices, values and knowledge systems," as reported by the Toronto Sun.

"Beginning in the 19th century the development of national parks and protected areas in Canada disrupted these relationships through exclusion and colonial injustices," the report added.

“In establishing national parks, Indigenous people were forcibly removed from their homes, denied access to traditional territories and prohibited from hunting and harvesting on park lands,” the report added. The document was dated 2024 and was released on June 22.

Banff National Park, the country's first national park, was established in 1885. Although it was originally named the Rocky Mountains Park, it was established in order to protect thermal springs found in the park. It was later named Banff in 1930 when the National Parks Act was passed.

The report added, “Stoney Nakoda were prevented from using the land as in past ways. These laws, practices and policies caused historic and ongoing harm for Indigenous communities. They eroded Indigenous systems.”

Parks Canada was established by the Canadian government in 1911 and was called the Dominion Parks Branch at the time. The organization was tasked with taking care of a small number of parks and reserves.

The report added, “Parks Canada now acknowledges this harmful historical legacy and its impact on Indigenous language, culture, laws and governance systems."

One in five Atlantic Canadians say family members left region for work, federal survey finds

More than one in five Atlantic Canadians say a family member has left the region in the past five years because they could not find suitable work, according to new federal research that also found widespread pessimism about the region's long-term economic prospects.

Blacklock's Reporter says the survey, commissioned by the federally appointed Atlantic Economic Panel, found 21% of respondents had a relative move away from Atlantic Canada in search of employment.

The highest rate was recorded in Newfoundland and Labrador at 25%, followed by Nova Scotia at 21%, New Brunswick at 20% and Prince Edward Island at 12%.

When asked about the region's future prosperity, only 41% of respondents believed Atlantic Canada would eventually become about as prosperous as the rest of the country, while 44% said it would remain less prosperous.

Opinion was also divided on employment opportunities for younger people. While 45% agreed there are growing job opportunities for young people in Atlantic Canada, 47% disagreed.

Respondents were similarly split over the region's economic independence. Half said they were not confident Atlantic Canada could grow its economy and rely less on equalization payments in the future, compared with 47% who expressed confidence. Another 3% had no opinion. Continue…

California Senator Calls on Quebec to Return to Selling American Wine

California Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff is pushing for Quebec to resume importing and allowing the sale of American wine, as U.S. political pushback against several provincial restrictions on selling U.S. alcohol grows.

Schiff posted a comment on an article regarding a letter he wrote to Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette in late June urging the province to resume selling California wine.

“Canada’s boycott of California wine is causing devastating harm to winegrowers,” Schiff posted July 9 on X.

“I’m urging the Canadian government to recognize that California doesn’t agree with these tariff wars, to lift these restrictions, and increase consumer options to strengthen both our economies.”

Canada was the top destination for American wine and accounted for 36 percent, or US$460 million worth, of all American wine exports in 2024, according to the California-based Wine Institute.

The Supreme Court of Canada has restored a mandatory minimum sentence for individuals convicted of communicating to obtain, or attempting to obtain, sexual services from a person under the age of 18.

The 7-2 decision, released July 10, restores six months as the mandatory minimum sentence.

The ruling overturns a May 2024 decision by the Quebec Court of Appeal that found the mandatory minimum sentence for the crime was unconstitutional under Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms, saying could amount to cruel and unusual punishment.

The appeal stemmed from the case of 61-year-old Mario Denis, who was convicted of communicating online to obtain sexual services from someone he believed was a girl under the age of 18.

Denis had responded to an online ad for an underage escort on a website “known for offering sexual services from children,” according to court documents.

The advertisement was part of an undercover police operation. Denis was communicating with an undercover officer posing as an underage girl and was arrested after entering the room where he believed she would be. Continue…

Despite this, the report authors wrote that there is a “common misperception” in Canada that top income earners do not pay their fair share of taxes. US, Canada Strike Deal to Open Gordie Howe International Bridge

The United States’s decision to prosecute the case instead of Canada can be explained by several factors, including differences in the two countries’ laws and the broader reach of U.S. prosecutors.

The U.S. Department of Justice alleges that crime boss Lawrence Bishnoi and his lieutenant, Satinderjeet Singh, also known as “Goldy Brar,” ordered the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was shot dead outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, B.C., on June 18, 2023.

Nijjar was a Sikh separatist leader who advocated for the creation of Khalistan, a proposed independent Sikh homeland to be carved out of India’s Punjab region.

The RCMP has charged four people accused of carrying out the assassination and has participated in the latest operation targeting Indian organized crime, but it has not charged Bishnoi or Brar.

Military left decision about sexual assault charge to commander with friendly ties to alleged assailant

Military police concluded there was enough evidence to lay a sex assault charge against an individual known as “Officer X,” but the decision was left to a navy commander with friendly ties to the alleged assailant, according to documents obtained by the Ottawa Citizen.

That commander decided not to lay charges, according to the records.

The Ottawa Citizen originally broke the story about Officer X in March 2024, citing an internal Department of National Defence report and police investigations alleging multiple incidents of sexual misconduct dating back as far as 2006.

Katerberg was represented by the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF), whose constitutional lawyer Chris Fleury successfully argued that the Ministry's actions violated section 2(b) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which protects freedom of expression.

Katerberg's billboard, erected along Highway 17 near Thessalon, featured photographs of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Premier Doug Ford, former Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam and other officials above the messages, "They knowingly lied about safety and stopping transmission" and "Canadians demand accountability." Karandeep Singh, 24, pleaded guilty on June 30 to sexually assaulting a woman in Prince George on June 13, 2024.

According to an agreed statement of facts read in court, Singh met the woman through her cousin the month before the assault. On the day of the offence, the woman believed she had been communicating with Singh through Snapchat to arrange a bonfire at West Lake Provincial Park. Singh later claimed it had actually been a friend using his account.

Instead of going to the park, the group went to a basement suite near Ospika Boulevard. Court heard Singh's friend brought the woman into a bedroom while Singh remained outside, where he became "turned on and excited." After his friend left the room, Singh entered, immediately removed his pants and underwear, and forced the woman into sexual acts.

Reports from the scene described bystanders fleeing in panic as gunshots rang out.

Toronto Police issued updates on social media, stating that officers had secured the scene but were still searching for the suspect or suspects responsible.

Authorities urged the public to avoid the area while the investigation continued.

No immediate details were released about the identity of the shooter or the motive behind the attack.

Toronto Police have not yet released information on whether the shooting was a targeted attack, a fight, or random violence.

The suspect remains at large as of Saturday evening, and investigators are asking for any witnesses or video evidence that could help identify those responsible.

Two hours after the raid started, the communist officials started hauling away Christians in groups, with 33 total believers detained.

Most of them were transferred to Jiangyou City’s centralized registration center and detention facility.

Before letting anyone leave — including elderly people and children — police made them agree to sign a “guarantee letter.”

Some of the attendees agreed.

“However, officials refused to disclose the contents of the statement until individuals agreed to sign it. A 15-year-old Dutch girl has been arrested on suspicion of fatally stabbing her parents to death inside their home during the early hours of June 18 in what authorities are investigating as a double murder.

The suspect, who reportedly first identified as a boy and later as a dog, allegedly attacked her mother and father, Johan Enting and Mathilda Diemel, both 53, in their Meerstad residence, according to Dutch News.

She also reportedly stabbed the family’s pet golden retriever during the rampage.

In a sickening detail that has horrified the community, the girl allegedly took photographs of her parents’ blood-covered bodies and sent the images to classmates via WhatsApp shortly after the killings, the Telegraaf reported.

Dutch authorities have issued urgent warnings urging anyone in possession of such material not to share it and to turn it over directly to investigators.

Classmates have described the girl’s increasingly bizarre behavior in the months and years leading up to the tragedy. One student told media outlets that she “wore a tail, dog ears, and gloves” and would “crawl around on all fours and bark while running through the school corridors,” AOL reported.

Neighbors reported seeing her sprinting through the streets at night while acting like a dog, perching silently on garden fences and shed roofs, and hiding in bushes, behavior they said had been worsening.

The victims’ family and friends released a statement saying they are “deeply affected by the tragic events surrounding the passing of Johan and Mathilda from Meerstad” and “can hardly comprehend” what happened, while thanking the public for support.

Dutch police have confirmed a minor is in custody but have not disclosed a motive. The investigation remains ongoing.

The International Criminal Court’s own internal oversight body has just exposed its chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, as a sexual harasser who abused his power over a junior female subordinate.

A 21-member bureau investigating the allegations concluded that Khan engaged in sexual activity with the junior staffer, constituting sexual harassment, and abused his authority in the process.

He pressured her into sex amid a blatant power imbalance. Khan later tried to dissuade her from pursuing misconduct claims against him.

UN investigators laid out the disgusting details: “He would grab and paw at her breasts, try to access her pelvic area, and suck on her neck,” i24 News reported.

Khan never clearly denied the sexual relationship despite being given 30 opportunities to do so during the UN probe. His main concern at the time? Whether the woman might have made recordings implicating him.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) spent the early 2010s constructing what may have been the most ambitious predictive vaccine-development infrastructure ever attempted: a sprawling, multi-institution effort designed to determine the future characteristics of purported pathogens before they emerged and ultimately use those predictions to develop drugs and vaccines before they were needed.

The program, known as PROPHECY—short for Pathogen Defeat—was announced in 2010 under Broad Agency Announcement DARPA-BAA-10-93 and was managed by DARPA’s Defense Sciences Office.

Canada's Arctic ambassador has been fined for violating the federal Conflict of Interest Act after failing to provide required financial disclosure documents following her appointment, renewing scrutiny of what critics say are weak penalties for ethics violations.

Blacklock's Reporter says Ethics Commissioner Konrad von Finckenstein imposed a $400 fine on Virginia Mearns, who earns an annual salary of about $181,000, for failing to submit supporting documents within the 60-day deadline required under the Act after becoming Arctic ambassador last September.

According to the commissioner's notice, Mearns was penalized for her "failure to provide within 60 days of appointment as part of a confidential report, supporting documents considered necessary to ensure compliance with the Act."

The Conflict of Interest Act requires public office holders to disclose financial information, including significant debts, investment income, rental properties and other assets, to ensure compliance with federal ethics rules.

The commissioner's notice does not specify what documents Mearns failed to provide.

Mearns, a former political aide in Nunavut and former executive director of the Qikiqtani Inuit Association, was appointed Arctic ambassador on Sept. 15.

Following her appointment, she said her role would focus on representing northern communities internationally.

"As Arctic Ambassador I am committed to amplifying the voice of Northerners on the international stage, sharing their knowledge, priorities and vision for the future," Mearns said at the time. "My approach is rooted in listening."

The Ethics Commissioner's office typically issues administrative monetary penalties only after repeated efforts to obtain required information have failed.

Previous cases suggest fines are generally imposed only after multiple reminders go unanswered.

In 2020, Liberal MP James Maloney was found in breach of the House of Commons Conflict of Interest Code after failing to complete mandatory disclosures despite repeated contact from the ethics office. Records showed officials attempted to reach him 15 times before then-ethics commissioner Mario Dion ordered him to issue a public apology, the maximum penalty available under the parliamentary code.

The maximum fine under the federal Conflict of Interest Act is $500, a limit that has drawn criticism from MPs.

During a 2022 meeting of the House of Commons ethics committee, then-Conservative MP Damien Kurek argued the penalties were too low to deter misconduct.

"When folks ask what the penalty is and I outline some of the details in the Act, $500 is certainly not significant in the eyes of many Canadians and I would agree with them," Kurek told the committee.

The Conservative Party has previously proposed substantially increasing the maximum penalties for ethics violations.

During the 2019 federal election campaign, the party pledged to raise the maximum fine from $500 to $20,000. Two years later, it proposed fines of up to $50,000, arguing penalties should be proportionate to the seriousness of the offence and the offender's financial circumstances.

“The safety of our pilots, crews and the public is our highest priority,” Marlo Pritchard, president and fire commissioner with the agency, said in a news release Friday.

“While these aircraft are critical to our wildfire response operations, we are taking a proactive approach to ensure their continued safety and reliability.”

Three people were on board a Turbo Commander 690 that crashed near Fort Simpson, N.W.T., west of Yellowknife, on June 24 while it was providing tactical support for a water bomber.

Fernando Balanta says he was on a trip to the landfill in Boston Bar, B.C., on July 2 when the journey took a surreal turn.

He and others found themselves trying to extinguish a fire that had started on both sides of the road, stomping on it and even using a frying pan to try to smack it out.

But the fire, fanned by gusty winds, would not go out, as Balanta and others called it in.

The BC Wildfire Service would later identify the landfill road as the original site of the Brunswick Creek fire that was discovered that day.

It would later combine with the Ainslie Creek blaze into a fire complex that has triggered hundreds of evacuation orders and alerts in and around the Fraser Canyon community.

The BC Wildfire Service is issuing a call for compliance, as two out-of-control wildfires continue to burn in the Fraser Canyon.

An overnight statement from the agency says that since Highway 1 reopened yesterday, between Boston Bar and Jackass Summit, drivers have been seen speeding through the fire zone and even stopping to film the ongoing firefighting efforts.

It also confirmed sightings of a drone operating near the southeast flank of the Brunswick Creek wildfire, while emergency air crews were fighting the blaze.

Due to the potential danger, airtanker and helicopter activity was temporarily suspended, putting both responders and the public at greater risk.

The public is reminded that wildfires are automatically considered flight-restricted areas, and violations can result in fines of up to $25,000 and up to 18 months in prison.

As for the highway, the Wildfire Service reiterates that the speed limit is 60 km/h, and there is no stopping in the fire zone.
