Israel attacks Lebanese city mentioned in Bible
The deadly strike on Tyre comes amid concerns that the Israeli military wants to control sites sacred to Christians and Muslims
Israel has struck the historic city of Tyre in Lebanon, targeting the Christian quarter for the first time after ordering a partial evacuation. The attack has heightened local concerns over the fate of the city’s revered Biblical heritage sites.
According to Reuters, eight people were killed in a single strike on Tyre’s eastern edge on Tuesday.
The Christian quarter, located in the city’s northwest, had been excluded from previous Israeli warnings and had sheltered people displaced from elsewhere.
The Israeli military issued the blanket evacuation order after claiming that Hezbollah militants were hiding in the quarter, a claim disputed by its residents, local officials, and the Lebanese army.
One of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities and a UNESCO World Heritage site, Tyre is mentioned repeatedly in both the Old and New Testaments. It was a major center of the ancient Phoenician kingdom, which supplied materials for the construction of Solomon’s Temple, believed to have stood on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, the site of the Al-Aqsa compound, one of Islam’s holiest sites.
The development comes amid growing tensions over religious and heritage sites across the region, with critics accusing Israel of expanding its control over locations sacred to Muslims and Christians.
Last month, Israel issued an expropriation order covering the village of Nabi Samwil in the occupied West Bank, home to what is believed to be the tomb of the Prophet Samuel, a figure revered in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
Palestinian officials and religious leaders have condemned the move as an attempt to erase Muslim heritage and strengthen Israeli control over contested holy sites.

Iranian fans shut out of World Cup
Tehran says organizers revoked its allocation of match tickets for supporters just days before the tournament
The US and World Cup organizers have withdrawn Iran’s allocation of fan tickets just days before the tournament is set to begin, the country’s football federation has said.
The last-minute decision has left thousands of Iranian supporters who had already made travel arrangements unable to attend their team’s matches.
The World Cup kicks off on Thursday, with Iran set to face New Zealand and Belgium in their opening two Group G matches in Los Angeles on June 15 and June 21 respectively, before taking on Egypt in Seattle on June 26.
“The United States has once again acted to obstruct the presence of Iranian supporters at the stadiums hosting the national team’s three group stage matches,” the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) said in a statement on Tuesday.
The federation said its ticket allocation had been withdrawn in an “unexpected move,” leaving it unable to provide “even a single ticket” to supporters of the national team.
Participating federations are typically allocated 8% of the tickets for each of their matches, which they distribute to supporters under their own criteria.
FFIRI described the decision as “contrary to the spirit governing international competitions and the principle of equality among participating countries.” It added that the move raised “serious questions about the interference of non-sporting and political considerations” in the organization of the World Cup.
Iran’s federation called on FIFA and tournament organizers “to uphold the principles of neutrality, fairness, and established regulations” and to ensure Iranian supporters could attend the matches.

Israel’s Ben-Gvir calls for abduction of Lebanese women to pressure Hezbollah
The National Security Minister called for Knesset members to "think outside the box about Hezbollah," arguing that arresting women and youth would hurt Hezbollah members the most.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir proposed arresting family members of Hezbollah operatives during a political-security cabinet meeting on Tuesday, while several ministers also called for expanding military operations in Lebanon and increasing defense procurement budgets.
Other ministers at the meeting urged Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to increase funding for military procurement and defense needs as the cabinet discussed the campaign in Lebanon and the possibility of expanding military operations.
Ben-Gvir calls for expanded measures against Hezbollah
The cabinet discussion focused on the Lebanese front and the possibility of expanding military operations.
Ben-Gvir proposed harming the civilian environment of Hezbollah operatives as a means of deterrence.
"Let's start thinking outside the box about Hezbollah," he said, "Also, conquering territory and killing many terrorists, but also arresting their women and youth and taking them to terrorist prisons. That's what hurts them the most."
A significant portion of the meeting was devoted to the budget crisis and the need for additional military equipment.
Minister of the Negev, Galilee, and National Resilience Yitzhak Wasserlauf directly opposed Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich's conduct and demanded that he release the budgets.
Wasserlauf explained that "a disproportionate response is needed in Lebanon and also additional armaments. A lot of armaments. Smotrich needs to open his pockets so that he can start to wake up."
Defense Minister Israel Katz supported the economic demand and also called on the Finance Ministry to inject funds into the army's equipment.
"The prime minister made an important decision to attack, and we must expand the armaments even further," Katz claimed, adding, "The Treasury needs to give more money, and I agree that much more needs to be given to the IDF."
Debate comes amid ceasefire pressure
The ministers' remarks came amid international pressure and political developments surrounding the fighting in Lebanon.
The discussion took place shortly after a conversation between US President Donald Trump and the Israeli political leadership that led to an official directive to hold fire on the northern front.
Despite the order to halt fighting, the ministers' comments reflected support within parts of the government for expanding the campaign in Lebanon, both operationally, as advocated by Ben-Gvir, and through increased military preparedness and procurement, as urged by Katz and Wasserlauf.

They were welcoming young men from a brutally backward country that has an entirely alien culture completely incompatible with our way of life.
Why let them in? Why do it? Why endanger British men and women? How many more did they let in?
I am putting a number of formal questions/FOIs to the Home Office to obtain that information.
Jenrick and Braverman were responsible for our borders, they held the power - they let this man in, and then handed him a visa.
It is sickening.

Congress Advances Bill Giving Israel Access to U.S. Intel, Despite Israeli Spying.
Bipartisan legislation advancing through Congress seeks to integrate American and Israeli intelligence-sharing frameworks, sparking concerns about U.S. autonomy and potential security risks.
Congress is set to significantly expand intelligence sharing with Israel through legislation integrating the two countries’ intelligence networks.
The proposed FY2027 Intelligence Authorization Act includes provisions for mandatory intelligence sharing with Israel. “[I]ntelligence sharing… shall include the sharing of information relating to cybersecurity threats, terrorism, sanctions evasion, plans and intentions of state and non state actors, adversarial technology proliferation, missile threats, unmanned aerial systems, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, air and space domain awareness, and other aerial threats relevant to the defense of Israel, United States forces and interests in the region, and regional security partners,” the legislation states. This would grant Israeli government officials, such as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, extremely broad access to U.S. intelligence. The bill is backed by both Democrats and Republicans.
The legislation could reshape the global intelligence-sharing landscape, potentially sidelining the Five Eyes alliance with America’s traditional English-speaking intelligence partners, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Passing the law would arguably make the U.S. and Israel one nation from the standpoint of intelligence, with Five Eyes partners likely to be concerned that any intelligence shared with the U.S. will likely be available to Israel, too. Domestic concerns center on a spate of incidents of Israel spying on the U.S., which will become easier in the future if the country has broad and not necessarily reciprocal access to U.S. intelligence. The Pentagon has reportedly raised the Israeli espionage risk to its highest level in recent days.
This push for co-operation comes on the tail-end of President Donald J. Trump heavily criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a phone call earlier this month. “You’d be in prison if it weren’t for me. I’m saving your ass. Everybody hates you now. Everybody hates Israel because of this,” the President said to Netanyahu, concerning Israeli strikes on Lebanon that derailed peace talks with Iran.
