The Columbus, Indiana, native is a graduate of Columbus North High School. He graduated from Hanover College in 1981. While a member of the U.S. House, Pence served on the Committee on Foreign Affairs, and was vice chair of the subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia. He also served on the subcommittee on Intellectual Property, Competition, and the Internet.
