ESA and Spain strengthen ties for secure connectivity

The European Space Agency (ESA) and the Agencia Espacial Española (AEE) signed a Memorandum of Intent on 20 May to strengthen cooperation on secure satellite connectivity, reinforcing Spain’s growing strategic role in Europe’s space and resilience ambitions.
We rely on internet connectivity every day, from reading this article to sending money through banking applications, but how secure are these connections?
Now imagine the security and bandwidth of connectivity required for critical infrastructure such as national power grids or border surveillance systems.
Ensuring these connections remain resilient against potential threats – while maintaining European autonomy – is essential. ESA is actively working to strengthen secure connectivity for European governments and institutions.
ESA works closely with the European Commission to support the development of the European Commission’s Infrastructure for Resilience, Interconnectivity and Security by Satellite (IRIS2) programme.
In parallel, ESA is also supporting the development of technologies and complementary capabilities, namely the preparation for new services that could later be used within the operational programme itself.
Spain is the main contributor to Low-LEO related activities, as part of ESA’s programme that’s supporting and contributing to the EU secure connectivity programme, IRIS2; where the Element 3 of the programme was approved at the last ESA Ministerial Council in December 2025.
The signature event – which took place during the third Spanish Space Congress in Madrid – further reinforces the country’s capabilities as Europe’s fifth largest space power.
The Memorandum of Intent was signed by ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher and Spain’s Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Diana Morant.
During the signature, Laurent Jaffart, Director of ESA’s Resilience, Navigation and Connectivity, and Juan Carlos Cortés, Director of Agencia Espacial Española, were present.
Through the agreement, ESA and AEE intend to strengthen cooperation on the ESA programme related to EU secure connectivity.
It aims at establishing a framework for exploring increased programme activities in Spain and foster closer technical cooperation between ESA and AEE.
This includes the creation of a dedicated IRIS2 Integrated Project Team in Spain, with particular focus on ESA’s Low-LEO layer activities.
Ultimately, the agreement opens the door to broader future collaboration in areas such as resilience, navigation, and connectivity.
Josef Aschbacher, ESA Director General, said: “With IRIS2, Europe is building the next generation of secure connectivity from space.
Through this agreement with Spain, ESA is advancing the technologies and partnerships needed to ensure these systems are resilient, trusted, and under European control.”
Diana Morant, Spain’s Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, said:
“Spain has stopped looking at the future with resignation and has started building it with technological and industrial ambition”, and expressed her conviction that “space must serve to improve the lives of those of us living on Earth.”

Erika Kirk Hit With Legal Notice Over Wrongful Trademark Grab on Charlie Kirk’s Name Erika Kirk is facing legal notice and pushback over her attempt to personally trademark Charlie Kirk’s name and likeness. On October 4, 2025 she filed two federal trademark applications — Serial Number 99427865 and 99427868 — claiming “CHARLIE KIRK” for education, entertainment, clothing, media, fundraising, the whole commercial package in her own name.
This is not about preserving a legacy. It is a straight-up attempt to personally own and monetize the name and image of her late husband for her own benefit. The filings show she is trying to bypass the Kirk Family Trust and secure the financial fruits of Charlie’s life’s work for herself instead of for his minor children.
Charlie’s parents, Robert and Kathryn Kirk, are fighting back hard in Maricopa County court. They are the final line of defense against Erika’s personal appropriation of these assets. The trademarks have been suspended by the USPTO and remain under active dispute.
The move is as transparent as it gets. While Erika lectures the country about radicalization and plays the grieving widow on camera, she is simultaneously filing paperwork to lock down Charlie’s name as her personal commercial asset. The same leadership that keeps pushing high-profile appearances and coordinated messaging is now trying to cash in on the name itself through legal maneuvering.
This kind of action exposes the priorities. The organization Charlie built is supposed to be about the mission, not turning his identity into a private revenue stream for the widow. People came to TPUSA because of Charlie’s conviction and straight talk. Now the focus is on who gets to own the brand and the money that comes with it.
The public sees the filings, the court battle with Charlie’s parents, and the pattern. When a CEO files to trademark her dead husband’s name for clothing, media, and fundraising while the family trust and his parents are in court fighting it, the priorities become crystal clear.

Greta Gao is using her perch on the House Judiciary Committee to help lawmakers look for ways to fight back against the Trump administration in court.
Gao, 46, decided to enter Congress amid a swirl of investigative activity, joining in Democrats’ request to secure President Trump’s tax returns and later working on impeachment.
Gao said she wanted to be involved in the work “rather than just reading about it,” joining a team at an intense time when “everyone was there for a purpose.”
After a stint at the Justice Department, she’s returned to Congress. But with Democrats back in the minority, she plays a dual role in looking for ways to fight back in Congress and in the courts.
Gao is helping coordinate among Democratic members who individually do not have the power to sue on behalf of the whole of Congress, but who nonetheless are finding avenues to weigh in on litigation through amicus briefs.
“It is helping judges understand and decide these cases. Because even though we’re the minority and are not speaking for the entire body of Congress, it is an important perspective — Congress’s perspective as the body that made these laws that pass these appropriations bills, that establish these agencies or these rules for how the government should operate,” she said.
Judges are often weighing congressional intent, and there are signs they have been relying on the briefs.
The so-called Litigation and Rapid Response Working Group’s first amicus brief came in a case challenging the dismantling of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), stressing that “Congress established the CFPB through Dodd-Frank for a reason.”
U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson cited the brief extensively in granting an injunction, including their warnings to the court on how it would jeopardize protections from predatory lending practices.
Outside of court, Gao is focused on helping the committee make sure its work resonates with the public.
“She has a great sense of alarm about what’s taking place throughout the Department of Justice and throughout the government, and she feels powerfully impelled to work on this,” Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) said of Gao.
Gao is focused on explaining the dismantling efforts undertaken by Trump and “why it matters.”
“All these institutions — universities, law firms, nonprofits, NPR, PBS, government agencies — they’re all now realizing that it’s actually vitally important that the American public understands the importance of their work,” she said.
