DHL Group CEO Tobias Meyer warned Bloomberg TV earlier this morning that a persistent Gulf energy shock could morph into broader trouble for the global economy.
"Well we have seen this before, that you have recognized by consumers as having an impact that sparks broader discussion, the real economic implications for people. Now, this hasn't happened yet. We're trying to prevent that from happening. The 10, 12 million barrels of crude oil per day, it will come to that tipping point. Solutions are needed and political momentum is building up to resolve the situation in the Strait of Hormuz," Meyer said.

Pablo Galante Escobar, the head of liquefied natural gas (LNG) at Vitol, warned the audience at the FT Commodities Summit earlier today that the "world is on borrowed time" and that the Gulf energy shock will develop into a food crisis unless LNG flows resume through the Hormuz chokepoint.
"We are on borrowed time. Every day this trade remains closed and every day production does not come back, we are building a problem for the future, and we are building a problem that, as I said, will be transferred from the energy side into many different sectors, with the food sector being a very important one," Escobar said, who works world's biggest independent energy trader.
Escobar continued, "This is not sustainable, or the energy crisis will become a food crisis. Only gas can supply the feed for fertilizers. We are building a problem for the future."
He added that even if the Hormuz chokepoint reopened today, it could still take three to five months for undamaged LNG production to fully recover. Continue…

President Donald Trump on April 20 invoked the Defense Production Act to issue a series of memorandums focused on strengthening coal supply chains, natural gas transmission, and liquefied natural gas capacity.
Trump also signed memos aimed at boosting domestic petroleum production, enhancing grid infrastructure, and expanding the deployment of “large-scale energy” and related infrastructure.
In a post on X, White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said the memos would allow the Energy Department to use funding from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act to strengthen the country’s “grid infrastructure and unleash reliable, affordable, secure energy.”
The Defense Production Act is a cold war-era legislation that grants the president authority to expand and expedite the supply of materials from the domestic industrial base for national security purposes.
In the memos, Trump cited his Jan. 20, 2025, executive order declaring a national energy emergency, noting that insufficient energy supply could expose the country to “hostile foreign actors” and risk national security.
“Consistent with that declaration, I find that ensuring the domestic capability for development, manufacturing, and deployment of large-scale energy and energy-related infrastructure is essential to United States national defense, yet due to financing risks, regulatory delays, and market barriers, these cannot be met in full under existing market conditions,” the president stated in one of his memos. Registrations of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Europe’s key automotive markets surged by 51% in March as the Iran war pushed gasoline prices to multi-year highs, data published by research firm New Automotive and trade association E-Mobility Europe showed on Monday.
More than 224,000 new electric passenger cars were registered in March alone across 15 key EU + EFTA markets, the analysis found. These sales accounted for as much as 22% of all new passenger car sales across the key European markets.
In another sign that expensive gasoline is pushing drivers to EVs, European Union member states registered more than 500,000 new electric cars in the first quarter of 2026, a surge of 33.5% compared to the same period last year, the data showed.

Volodymyr Zelensky’s head of his Presidential Office in Ukraine, Kyrylo Budanov, has announced plans to import migrant laborers from Africa. Essentially, this entails Ukraine establishing new laws for the legal entry and residence of foreign workers.
The government will introduce a new list of “migration-risk” countries to facilitate this plan, according to remarks Budanov made at the CEO Club Ukraine.
“They enter, obtain documents, and then move on. This is a problem that creates barriers for business,” Budanov reportedly said, emphasizing that Ukraine will now move to make it easier for migrants to stay and work in Ukraine.
Last October, rumors swirled that Ukraine was directly recruiting mercenaries from Latin American drug cartels to fight in its war against Russia. Kyiv’s forced conscription policies at home, which often resort to violence, have already raised numerous concerns about the brutal practices of Zelensky’s military as well as the desperate situation Ukraine is in due to loss of life on the frontlines.
It has long been known that Ukraine faces a serious demographic crisis, now exacerbated by men who have died in the war or fled to other countries. Already, there have been voices pushing for mass immigration in Ukraine since the war began. Last year, Remix News reported that Vasyl Voskobojnik, president of the Ukrainian Association of Foreign Employment Agencies, said the population decline can no longer be offset by simply increasing the birthrate. This might be the US’ final warning before it takes drastic action to punish those who continue to reject Trump’s demands.
Under Secretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby gave an important speech at mid-April’s Ukraine Defense Contact Group in which he urged the Europeans to step up their transition to something that he described earlier this year as “NATO 3.0”.
As was explained here, “The idea is that NATO should return to focusing on defending itself instead of overextending itself in the Indo-Pacific, West Asia, Eastern Europe, and elsewhere”, and the preceding hyperlinked analysis explains how it aligns with Trump 2.0’s policies.
Circling back to Colby’s speech, he demanded that “Europe must accelerate its assumption of primary responsibility for the conventional defense of the continent”, including arming Ukraine through the “Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List” (PURL) program in which the US plays the most significant role.
To that end, “The need to quickly rebuild European munitions stocks is paramount, as is the need to remove protectionist trade barriers that stifle the continent’s industrial potential.”

The US has suspended all funding and security coordination with Iraq, and shipments of dollars the Central Bank of Iraq (CBI), until a new Baghdad government acceptable to Washington is formed, Saudi state-owned Al-Hadath reported Monday.
The US is also conditioning continued security cooperation on the disclosure of those involved in the bombing of its embassy, the news channel added.
Nevertheless, on Monday, the CBI released a statement rejecting the Al-Hadath report. Since 2003, a decision issued by Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) head Paul Bremer has required that all Iraqi oil revenues be paid into an account at the US Federal Reserve Bank of New York, giving the US the ability to control how many US dollars are returned to the CBI.
From that point until today, the Iraqi Ministry of Finance has had to submit funding requests to the US Treasury, which then approves or denies them based on its own criteria.
This monthly transfer of US dollars, flown into Baghdad in pallets of hard cash, determines Iraq's ability to pay for basic needs such as salaries, food, and medicine.
Whenever Washington believes that Iraq is not aligned with US regional goals, including enforcing economic sanctions on Iran, Baghdad's major trading partner and a source of natural gas for electricity production, these fund transfers can be delayed or reduced. Continue…

People on the far-left and far-right of the political spectrum rarely find any issue upon which they intersect and share common ground. However, both sides have an almost religious fear of data analytics company Palantir. Their reasons might be different but their reactions are similar.
On the political left, Palantir is seen as Donald Trump's data gestapo. They hate the company because it has created tools used by DHS and ICE to track down illegal immigrants using welfare and medical subsidies information. It has also been an active ally in producing strategic analysis for Israel for the war in Gaza and Lebanon. Leftists argue that Palantir is a "genocidal" corporation and a technological harbinger of "fascism".
On the other side, libertarians view Palantir as the All Seeing Eye of Sauron - A precursor to total AI surveillance of the population. They view former CEO Peter Thiel's presence in the Trump Administration as a negative influence. Other conservatives argue that the company's relationship to Israel and its ties to the Trump Administration are more proof that the Israelis run the world.
Palantir has recently posted a sort of manifesto, a list of values or principles linked to CEO Alex Karp's book "The Technological Republic: Hard Power, Soft Belief, And The Future Of The West". Many of the ideas presented run more in line with libertarian or conservative principles, but they also deviate into areas that will surely ruffle feathers and elicit distrust. At the very least, Palantir presents a platform for debate about the future and the growing influence of digital technology on politics and war.

St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary School has seen police respond to three separate incidents between April 13 and today, April 20.
The Cobourg Police Service (CPS) has an update on today’s situation that mirrors previous updates, namely that they suspect these calls to be a string of “swatting” incidents. That is, hoax emergency calls intended to trigger a large police response.
“Police believe this incident to be an instance of swatting. CPS takes all reports of threats or potential dangers to community safety seriously and responds accordingly to ensure everyone's safety,” a statement from the service reads.

The Privy Council Office spent thousands of dollars on yoga lessons, limousine services and a self-described “productivity ninja,” while also paying millions to outside consultants for work similar to that already handled by federal employees, according to records obtained through access-to-information requests.
Among the expenses highlighted by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation were $12,900 for a Hatha Slow Flow yoga instructor, $20,400 with Ottawa Executive Limousine, $136,290 at the Pan Pacific Toronto, $386,700 on furniture and $1,300 for services listed as a “productivity ninja.”
The federation also says the Privy Council Office spent $3,975 on licensed products including coins, swords, plaques and crests, as well as $4,665 on artwork.
The department, which supports the prime minister and cabinet, spent $17.4 million on professional services in 2025, according to the documents.
Of that total, $5.8 million went to communications, marketing, financial and strategy-related consulting and contracting services, despite the department employing about 320 staff in similar roles, the federation said.
It also spent $641,400 on audiovisual consulting while maintaining nearly $1 million annually in in-house multimedia staff.
Another $4.8 million was paid to EssenceMediacom for advertising services connected to Canada’s trade agreements.
“The PCO already has hundreds of communications and research bureaucrats and then it spends millions getting consultants and contractors to do their homework,” said Franco Terrazzano.

A recent case involving a 31-year-old Texas man who lured a 14-year-old boy into an Ottawa hotel for sex has reignited debate about Canada’s age-of-consent law. Currently, the legal age for so-called consensual sex between two persons in Canada is 14 years old – one of the world’s youngest.
Police charged the man, Dale Eric Beckham, for abduction and luring of the boy. Police claimed, however, that the sex itself was consensual. In Texas, the man would face an indecency charge, with a two to 20 year sentence, or a sexual assault charge, carrying a five to 99 year sentence. In Canada, the abduction charge carries a maximum penalty of five years.
“We have these sex tourism laws for Cambodia and Thailand … when, in fact, we’re becoming a sex tourism destination for Americans because of our low age-of-consent laws,” said Conservative justice critic Vic Toews in comments to the Ottawa Sun. He would like to see the law altered to increase the age of consent to 16.
“It’s important to realize that, developmentally, these are still children,” said Cybertip.ca executive director Lianna McDonald. “They have a higher propensity to be victimized.”
The boy’s mother, meanwhile, expressed her disappointment with the justice system. “It concerns me that people from the U.S. are maybe preying on children in Canada because they know the laws are more lax,” she stated.

Gallivan and a number of federal officials were testifying April 20 before the House committee on citizenship and immigration about an audit released earlier this month by Auditor General Karen Hogan that found considerable problems in tracking and enforcement of international student visas.
Specifically, Hogan’s audit identified 153,000 international students who were flagged for potential visa non-compliance in 2023–24 but found that only approximately 4,000 cases were investigated.
It also found that immigration officials failed to follow up on 800 confirmed cases of fraud and unable to account for the whereabouts of tens of thousands of international students whose study permits had expired.
“The negative findings, in particular the lack of follow through on fraud, are unacceptable,” Gallivan told the committee. “We need to act more quickly, more aggressively, and more thoroughly in the face of discrepancies.” Continue…

Alberta is currently on Mountain Daylight Time (UTC-6), meaning that if the legislation passes, the province would remain on that time permanently. The proposal is expected to be introduced for first reading this week.
Asked by a reporter on March 5 whether her government would pursue permanent standard time or permanent daylight saving time, Smith replied: “I like more sunlight at night, and I think most people do too, because we are on daylight eight months out of the year.”
“Going to standard 12 months out of the year would be a big adjustment for people,” she added.
The move follows years of public debate, including a 2021 referendum that narrowly rejected permanent daylight time.

EU envoys approve €90 billion Ukraine loan after Hungary lifts veto

A €90 billion ($106 billion) EU loan to Ukraine that was the focus of a months-long stand-off with Hungary is set to be disbursed on Thursday, according to media reports.
EU ambassadors approved the move on Wednesday, paving the way for a formal sign off by 27 member states, Reuters said citing a spokesman for the Cypriot presidency in the bloc.
The green light came shortly after Ukraine reportedly resumed deliveries via the Soviet-built Druzhba oil pipeline, as demanded by Peter Magyar, the incoming Hungarian prime minister.
Viktor Orban, the outgoing head of the Hungarian government, froze the disbursement of the Ukrainian funding in retaliation for the halting of the deliveries in January. He called it a politically motivated ploy aimed to support Magyar’s party in the April 12 parliamentary election. Continue…
