While rare for sex trafficking due to the high risk of death from lack of ventilation, shipping containers are used by international organized crime for human smuggling.
Wexford, Ireland (2024): Authorities launched a human trafficking investigation after 14 people, including two girls, were found in a refrigerated shipping container that had traveled from France.
Veracruz, Mexico (2023): 343 migrants, including 103 unaccompanied minors, were found abandoned in a freight truck container equipped with fans and ventilation ports.
Tilbury, UK (2014): 35 people, including 13 children, were discovered in a container arriving from Belgium after dockworkers heard "screaming and banging." One man died during the journey.
Kidnapping Case (2024): In Pennsylvania, two men were charged with kidnapping and raping four women, including a 17-year-old.
