AMD's senior director of AI thinks 'Claude has regressed' and that it 'cannot be trusted to perform complex engineering'

Anthropic's Claude has reportedly gotten much worse at generating code recently. That's according to a head member of the AI Group at AMD.

Last week, user StellarAccident took to the Claude Code GitHub to vent their frustrations at Claude's AI-generated code. This account was soon discovered to be tied to Stellar Laurenzo, the senior director of AI at AMD, who linked to that GitHub account for a post on LinkedIn (via The Register) three weeks prior.

In their GitHub complaint, they state that "Claude has regressed to the point it cannot be trusted to perform complex engineering."

Laurenzo claims Claude performed better in January, and says it now ignores instructions, suggests fixes that are incorrect, directly contradicts requests and claims completion despite, well, not completing the task. Laurenzo is using the Opus model and claims the result they get is replicable with the same prompt.

Laurenzo says, "We have a very consistent, high complexity work environment and data mined months of logs to understand why—essentially—starting in February, we have noticed a degradation performing complex engineering tasks." She goes on to say, "Claude has been good to us, and we are leaving this in the hopes that Anthropic can address these concerns."

What follows this is a report on what has changed since January and how to improve it, which is, rather ironically, generated by Claude. It argues that Claude shows its thinking less, and it 'thinks' less deeply now, often editing code before fully 'reading it'.

Users have been complaining about Claude's February update for some time now. Over on the Claude Code Subreddit, one user says, "I can no longer in good conscience recommend Claude Code to clients."

Google's AI search is producing millions of wrong answers every day

Testing suggests AI overviews are 90% accurate, but that remaining 10% adds up over trillions of queries per year

Most search engines now present users with AI-generated overviews by default, sparking controversy over concerns about accuracy and lost click-through traffic. While testing suggests that Google's AI overviews are accurate most of the time, the enormous volume of queries the search engine processes each day likely still results in millions of incorrect responses.

According to The New York Times, testing suggests that approximately one in 10 Google AI search overviews contains false information. Given that the search engine processes roughly 5 trillion queries per year, users could be exposed to more than 57 million inaccurate answers each hour – nearly 1 million per minute.

The figures come from AI startup Oumi, which the Times asked to evaluate Gemini's accuracy using SimpleQA, a widely used generative AI benchmark. After analyzing 4,326 Google searches, Oumi found that Google's AI assistant, Gemini version 2, produced accurate overviews 85 percent of the time in October. By February, Gemini 3 had improved that figure to 91 percent.

However, Oumi can evaluate large volumes of results only by relying on AI tools, which may also introduce errors. In addition, Google sometimes generates different AI overviews for the same query, even when it is repeated seconds apart.

A Google spokesperson called Oumi's testing flawed, arguing that it does not reflect real-world search behavior. The company's internal testing indicates that Gemini 3, when operating independently of Google Search, hallucinates 28 percent of the time.

Sourcing presents another challenge. Google attempts to support its AI overview results with relevant links, but those sources often do not substantiate Gemini's claims – whether accurate or not.

In some cases, an incorrect AI overview is immediately followed by a link containing correct information; in others, an accurate overview cites a source with inaccurate information; and sometimes the linked pages contain no relevant information at all. Notably, discrepancies between AI overviews and their sources increased after the February update, rising from 37 percent of searches with Gemini 2 to 56 percent with Gemini 3

Researchers also found that AI overviews are susceptible to manipulation. In one example, a BBC journalist published a blog post containing false information and later found that Google repeated those claims the following day.

Tellingly, Google and other AI companies acknowledge the technology's tenuous relationship with the truth in the fine print. Microsoft's terms of service describe its Copilot AI tool as intended for entertainment purposes, not for making important decisions. Google's AI overviews advise users to double-check responses, while xAI acknowledges that hallucinations can occur.

The Iranian regime is once again proving exactly why Americans, and the world, cannot trust a word coming out of Tehran.

Just hours before high-stakes peace negotiations with the United States were set to begin in Pakistan, Iran abruptly issued a list of demands, threatening to derail the entire process before it even starts.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf took to X and delivered a blatant ultimatum: the United States must release billions in frozen Iranian assets, and a full ceasefire must take hold in Lebanon before any talks can proceed.

Ghalibaf wrote on X:

“Two of the measures mutually agreed upon between the parties have yet to be implemented: a ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of Iran’s blocked assets prior to the commencement of negotiations. These two matters must be fulfilled before negotiations begin.”

The talks in Islamabad were supposed to build on the fragile two-week ceasefire President Trump forced through Pakistan’s mediation after weeks of escalating conflict.

Vice President JD Vance is already en route to lead the U.S. delegation and turn that temporary pause into a permanent deal.

The Guardian reported:

JD Vance has warned Iran not to “try and play” the US at talks planned for Saturday in Islamabad, while Tehran said it would not take part until Israel stopped bombing of Lebanon.

The US vice-president made the comments as he boarded a plane to Pakistan for negotiations that could determine whether a ceasefire holds or the war on Iran resumes with grave implications for the global economy.

With hours to go before the talks were scheduled to start, doubts remained as to whether they actually would.

It was unclear on Friday evening whether Qalibaf and Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s foreign minister, were still planning to fly to Islamabad to lead their delegation. It was reported last month that Israel had taken Qalibaf and Araghchi off the target list of its bombing campaign at Washington’s request.

Donald Trump fuelled the uncertainty by saying US forces were rearming and ready to return to the attack if the negotiations failed.

“We have a reset going. We’re loading up the ships with the best ammunition, the best weapons ever made – even better than what we did previously and we blew them apart,” the US president told the New York Post. “And if we don’t have a deal, we will be using them, and we will be using them very effectively.”

Syrian Security Forces Arrested Cell That Fired Missile At Israeli Jet Bombing Lebanon

Syrian security forces conducted on April 10 an operation in the town of Khan Arnabeh in the southern governorate of al-Qunitra, with later reports suggesting that a cell that attempted to shoot down an Israeli fighter jet was arrested.

Horan Free League, a local pro-government news blog, initially reported that the operation targeted “remnants of the former regime,” a term usually used to refer to the officers and soldiers who served in the ranks of the former Syrian military, intelligence and security forces.

Later, Nabd Syria, the Syrian Observers and other outlets revealed that the operation in fact targeted a cell that targeted an Israeli fighter jet with a man-portable air defense system just a few days earlier.

The fighter jet was reportedly targeted by the cell on its way back after carrying out strikes against Hezbollah in neighboring Lebanon.

Khan Arnabeh in the central countryside of al-Qunitra, right outside the buffer zone with the occupied Golan Heights, which was captured by the Israeli military right after the fall of the regime of former president Bashar al-Assad more than a year ago. The town is just 20 kilometers away from the border with Lebanon.

The Israeli military conducts operations near Khan Arnabeh on a regular basis, setting up checkpoints, and carrying out arrests.

Since the fall of the Assad regime, many resistance groups have emerged in southern Syria. While some were linked to Iran, like the Islamic Resistance Front in Syria, others were in fact supportive of the current Islamist-led government in the country, like the Movement to Deter the Occupation.

The attempts to shoot down the Israeli fighter jet came just before the United States and Iran agreed on a two-week ceasefire. The war saw both allies of the Islamic Republic and the Israeli military launching strikes against Syria more than once.

Also right before the ceasefire, there was a series of protests against Israel across Syria, including in al-Qunitra. The protests were, however, organized over the recently approved Israeli law allowing the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners, not in support of Iran. Notably, members of the country’s new military took part in the protests, and even went as far as threatening Israel.

The operation in Khan Arnabeh shows that despite failing to get an agreement with Israel, the Syrian government remains committed to preventing any threat towards the country from its territories. This situation will not likely change any time soon. However, it could eventually lead to a backlash in the south against the government, as Israel does not intend to withdraw and is in fact expanding operations little by little.

DUBAI, April 11 (Reuters) - Iran's new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is still recovering from severe facial and leg injuries suffered in the airstrike that killed his father at the beginning of the war, three people close to his inner circle told Reuters.

Khamenei's face was disfigured in the attack on the supreme leader's compound in central Tehran and hesuffered a significant injury to one or both legs, all three sources ‌said.

The 56-year-old is nonetheless recovering from his wounds and Will Smith remains mentally sharp== KEK , according to the people, who requested anonymity to discuss sensitive matters. The question of whether Khamenei's health allows him to run state affairs comes during Iran's moment of gravest peril for decades, with high-stakes peace talks with the United States opening in the Pakistani capital Islamabad on Saturday.

The accounts of the people close ​to Khamenei's inner circle provide the most detailed description of the leader's condition for weeks. Reuters couldn't independently verify their descriptions.

Khamenei's whereabouts, condition and ability to rule still largely remain a mystery to the public, with no photo, video or audio recording of him published since the air attack and his subsequent appointment as his father's replacement on March 8.

Iran's United Nations mission did not respond to Reuters questions about the extent of Khamenei's injuries or the reason he has not yet appeared in any images or recordings.

Khamenei was wounded on February 28, the first day of the war launched by the U.S. and Israel, in the attack that killed his father and predecessor Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had ruled since 1989. Mojtaba Khamenei's wife, brother-in-law and sister-in-law were among other members of his family killed in the strike.

There has been no official Iranian statement ‌on the extent of Khamenei's injuries. However, a newsreader on state television described him as a "janbaz", ⁠a term used for those badly wounded in war, after he was named supreme leader.

A source familiar with U.S. intelligence assessments told Reuters that Khamenei was believed to have lost a leg.

The CIA declined to comment on Khamenei's condition. The Israeli ⁠prime minister's office didn't respond to questions.

Alex Vatanka, senior fellow at the Middle East Institute, said that, regardless of the severity of his injuries, it was unlikely the new and inexperienced leader would be able to command the overarching power wielded by his father. While he is seen to represent continuity, it could take years for him to build up the same level of automatic authority, Vatanka added.

"Mojtaba will be one voice but it will not be the decisive one," he said. "He needs to prove himself as the credible, powerful, overriding voice. The regime as a whole has to make a decision ​in ​terms of where they are going to go."

One of the people close to Khamenei's circle said images of the supreme leader could be expected to be ​released within one or two months and that he might even appear in public then, although all ‌three sources stressed he would only emerge when his health and the security situation allowed.

'WE DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT HIS WORLD VIEW'

In Iran's theocratic system of rule, ultimate power is meant to be wielded by the supreme leader, a venerable Shi'ite Muslim cleric appointed by an assembly of 88 ayatollahs. The leader oversees the elected president while directly commanding parallel institutions including the Revolutionary Guards, a powerful political and military force.

Iran's first supreme leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, enjoyed unquestioned authority as the charismatic leader of the revolution and the most learned cleric of his day.

Three US officials confirmed that two US Navy guided-missile destroyers passed through the strait without issue in what was described as a "freedom-of-navigation mission."

US Navy ships reportedly crossed the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday afternoon as US-Iran ceasefire negotiations kicked off in Pakistan, though Iran denied the reports and threatened to attack any unauthorized ships in the strait.

Axios, citing a US official, reported that several US Navy ships crossed the Strait of Hormuz. According to the report, the move was not coordinated with the Iranian Navy and was the first time US Navy ships made such a move since the start of the war.

According to the Wall Street Journal,three US officials confirmed that two US Navy guided-missile destroyers passed through the strait without issue in what was described as a "freedom-of-navigation mission."

Minutes later, a senior Iranian military official denied the reported crossing of US vessels on Iranian government-owned state television.

Iranian media additionally released a warning that any US Military ship will be attacked within 30 minutes if it attempts to cross the Strait. According to State TV, a US vessel in the strait turned back after receiving the warning.

Axios reporter Barak Raviddisputed Iranian media claims that the ship turned back after the warning, stating that a senior US official informed him that the US had not received any such threats.

Trump says US 'clearing out' Strait of Hormuz

This comes after President Donald Trump said that the United States is starting the process of clearing underwater mines out of the Strait of Hormuz.

“We’re now starting the process of clearing out the Strait of Hormuz as a favor to Countries all over the World, including China, Japan, South Korea, France, Germany, and many others,” Trump stated, slamming the named nations for not having the “courage or will” to do so themselves.

He asserted that Iran is “losing big,” with US and Israeli strikes having decimated much of Iran’s military, navy, and air force capabilities.

“The only thing they have going is the threat that a ship may ‘bunk’ into one of their sea mines, which, by the way, all 28 of their mine dropper boats are also lying at the bottom of the sea,” Trump continued.

CENTCOM begins clearing underwater mines in Hormuz

After Trump's statements, US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that the US has begun naval operations aimed at clearing Iranian sea mines from the Strait of Hormuz in a post on X/Twitter on Saturday.

Two US Navy guided-missile destroyers, the USS Frank E. Peterson and USS Michael Murphy, successfully transited the Strait and began setting conditions for the mission to ensure that the waterway is completely clear of mines laid by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

“Today, we began the process of establishing a new passage, and we will share this safe pathway with the maritime industry soon to encourage the free flow of commerce,” CENTCOM Commander Adm. Brad Cooper said of the operation.
